  • A beautiful suprise each year, the Red Spider Lily is originally native to China and Japan. I call it by its common name, “Magic Lily”, because one day it is not there and the next it is! In the spring, it sprouts a cluster of long leaves similar to mondo grass and then dies back. There is not a trace of the flower to be found from late spring to late summer. Then when I usually have forgotten all about them, I wake up one August morning and stroll through my flowers and there is my surprise… ...stands of single shoots with no leaves swaying proudly with their red spider-like blooms! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. • There was a sale of this image in November 2008. SEE THE CAROUSEL IMAGE COLLECTION RIDE THE CAROUSEL FOR 25 CENTS! No, that is not a price from yesteryear but the price today for a ride on the Kit Carson County Carousel in Burlington, Colorado which is located just off Interstate 70 on the Colorado/Kansas border. Although there were nearly 4,000 wooden carousels carved in the U.S. between 1885 and 1930, there are fewer than 150 still in existence. The one in Burlington is a magnificent example of the menegerie carousel which includes other animals in addition to horses. There are 46 hand-carved animals mounted on a 45-foot diameter platform. The largest animals are on the outside row, each with intricate carvings ranging from a giraffe with a snake twined around its neck to a armed gnome perched behind the saddle of a zebra! This carousel was manufactured in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC). Carousels made by PTC are identified by numbers in the order they were made. Therefore, the one in Burlington is identified as the PTC No. 6 which indicates that it was the sixth (of 74) manufactured. The PTC No. 6 is a 3-row ride and the animals do not move up and down. Currently housed in a 12-sided wooden building, this 100+ year old carousel has been completely restored and still has original paint on both the cotton muslin scenery panels and on the animals. This carousel was originally run by the 1902 General Electric Induction Motor. Amazingly this motor has never been rebuilt and still powers the carousel on special occasions at more than 10-12 miles per hour! The average carousel has a speed of 8 mph. The PTC No. 6 was designated a National Historic Site in 1979, then designed a National Historic Landmark in l987, and is the only one in Colorado that you can ride! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please don’t copy or download this image. • This image was taken on the Berry College campus in Rome, Georgia. The Berry campus is the largest campus in the world at nearly 30,000 acres. It consists of fields and forest and mountains lands which have designated portions open to the public for hiking, cycling, horse back riding, and other outdoor activities. The large deer population is reputed to outnumber the students by eight to one! About half the campus is a wildlife refuge where no hunting is allowed. The other half (almost 16,000 acres) is managed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources where hunts are managed in an attempt to control the deer population and provide recreational opportunities within department regulations. With a permit fishing is allowed on some of the campus lakes and streams. Other wildlife often seen on campus are wild turkeys, seasonal ducks and geese, skunks, and squirrels. • This image won the I’m What You Make Me challenge on June 2, 2009. This image was featured in the Northern California Style group on June 3, 2009. This lighthouse memorial is located on the bluffs overlooking the bay in the city of Trinidad which was founded in 1850 and is the oldest town on the northern California coast. The lighthouse memorial is a replica of the nearby Trinidad Head Lighthouse. In 1949 the Trinidad Civic Club was the recipient of the California Grand Sweepstakes prize, Build a Better Community Contest, which was awarded by the National Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Kroeger Company. It is a memorial to those lost and buried at sea. Digital image post processed in Photoshop to create a painterly effect and then a triptych effect also created in Photoshop. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Please do not copy or download this image. • This tiny white bloom was one of several that appeared in my garden this year. Nestled among common blue flax, I almost did not see it. I was so surprised to see that the back side of the petals are green! Since I have no name for this unexpected little beauty, I chose niveus et viridis as the title which are the Latin words for white and green.
