  • Taken April 2006 with a Fuji E-510. I took this while I was on top of a mountain in Banff during the winter. There was a little cabin, and it’s interior can be seen inside my reflection in the window. Meanwhile the outdoor activity outside the cabin is reflected around my body. Looking back at this it sorta reminds me of the painting by Edouard Manet “A Bar at the Folies-Bergere” where the world the bar tendor is looking down on is reflected in the mirror behind her. Although not intended, many stories can be interpreted from this; and whatever that maybe, I’ll leave that up to the viewer :) This work has been featured in: / Weekly Them Challenges Actually it’s a funny story; I entered my work into that group to enter it into the Cameras challenge, and it was approved only after the voting had already started. Seeing as this particular group approves work based on the challenges it’s a bit strange that happened. Well I decided to let that go; it wasn’t a big deal. But two days after the challenge closed this work got featured among with the top ten :o)

  • Complete 2004 age 17 Medium: Pencil, pencil crayons, watercolours and ink on bristal board Size: 10×10cm

  • Completed 2004 age 18 I was inspired by the Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju, who tends to limit his colors in his paintings. Sometimes he paints an image where the background is the complimentary colors of the subject. His style is simple but at the same time intense, where the foreground stands out from the complimentary background. Medium: Watercolors This is a painting done in my sketchbook. The paper isn’t watercolor paper, but at least more durable than regular printing paper. • Taken on my last day of work during my intership in Hayama: Japan on August 8th, 2007. The office threw me a farewell dinner party at Hayama Isshiki beach, as we watched the sunset with Mt. Fuji and Enoshima in the distance. check out the series here

  • Small karps swimming in a pond in Hase Temple (Kamakura, Japan). It was a very hot day; it was one of Japan’s hottest summers (reached 40 degrees celcius), and very bright; hence the reflections. Also available at Zazzle More fish at Hase Temple:

  • Completed in 2004, age 17 This is a slightly cropped version of the original, due to the limits of my camera. My original signature got cropped out so I had to insert a new one in photoshop; in the original it is not actually located there. Original size: (40” x 30”) The two subjects are posed in similar positions, each having a dark, circular central focus., Both images have lines above and surrounding the centres, which draw attention towards the centres. The vertical composition help strenghten the feeling of height given by the vertical lines. Both subjects are organic, however one, the eye, has straight lines and geometrical shapes, while the rose has curvy lines and organic shapes. In the eye, the centre is literally dark, while in the flower the darkness is created by shadows. • 5 yen coins are typically given as donations at a Japanese Shinto Shrine because of the their hole, which is said to allow the wish to go through. There are several other cultural significance regarding the 5 yen coin. For example, 5 yen in Japanese is “Go-en,” which is the same as karma in Japanese (although written differently). Here the wish portrayed is the key to peace. The key I have here is one I made out of a wood block when I was 17. I made it to remind myself to work towards my goals and aspirations; it is my “Key To The Future”. Here it is the key to peace and the shrine is the door to that peace. The key is on a loop looping through the hole of the coin. Flying through the coin I also have my little folded peace crane I made not too long ago (Apr. 6, 08) out of a 6×6mm piece of paper (also portrayed in Born from Fingers and Born from the Pinky) “I shall write peace on your wings, and you shall fly all over the world” / (Sadako Sasaki – Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes) I could’ve done a computer generated key too, then it would’ve look more tidy than this one, however this image has more personal meaning for myself by using objects I made with my own hands. I like doing things by hand more, although it takes longer. I’ve played around with the settings of each layer in photoshop, and I’m having a hard time decided what looks best. • Based on this photo: / This was during my stay in Japan. On this day there was a typhoon to be expected so instead of going out, my landlady and I visited her friend Ayumi. This is her cat Hotaru; her name means “firefly” in Japanese. Even though it was chilly outside, I felt warm with little Hotaru sleeping in my lap; my little firefly… Medium: red lead This work has been featured in Colour Me a Rainbow Works by Category / Featured/Popular / Origami/Ori-plastic / Drawings,Paintings and Graphics / Flowers, Trees and Plants / Water and Waterscapes / Scenery / Light, Shadow, and Reflections / Living Creatures / Human Portrait / Japanfluence / Canada / Still Life / More kitties: / More cuties: For more images please visit the category links at the top.

  • Taken during my field trip 3 weeks ago. This was at a beach in Paestium, Italy as the sun was setting. These images were taken on the same day:

  • The Ponte San Michele bridge in Vicenza, Italy built between 1887-1889 Taken with an Olympus FE-220 on Oct. 25, 2008. This work has been featured in: / I Love Italy

  • As mentioned in my Penguin in a Snow Storm, I saw mobii’s Origami Penguin Tee shirt, and wanted to give it a go myself. This is the scenario I had in mind for it, and the first penguin I folded (the one in Penguin in a Snow Storm folded from a 7×7mm piece of paper) was too small, so I folded two bigger penguins with 14×14mm pieces of paper. The one on the left is flying up a bit after the right one stomped onto the other end. The seasaw is a cotton swab, and the “ice”, upon which the penguins and seesaw are reflected, is a plastic container. • Self-portrait graphic YES! I made it in time for the challenge! So I haven’t been active very much here generally because of school but still come online to see what’s happening. When this challenge was launched I was busy with a deadline (which just ended this morning). I did this just today after getting some catch-up sleep from pulling an all nighter. The past few days I’ve been constantly staying up late until early in the morning; going home after the sun has risen. As unpleasant as it is to have a strange sleeping routine; I do get to see some beautiful morning skies :P So after a full day of working in a dry building with air ducts rattling over my head, the moment I step out after sunrise is a rather sensual moment; which inspired me to do this. The background is a photo I took in Paesteum, Italy during the term I was studying in Rome. I haven’t uploaded that here yet because I still have a lot of pics from Europe which I have to sort and decide which will go up. The scene in the bottle I took on the same day I took this

  • As Is. Paestum, Italy September 25, 2008 On the same day I took this:

  • This was taken from the plane while I was flying from London UK to Barcelona, Spain on April 21, 2008 with my Olympus FE-340. / / Also available at Zazzle This work has been featured in / ‘Too Bright’ Works By Category” Featured/Popular* Early Works [pre-university] / Origami / Drawings,Paintings and Graphics / Abstract Photography / Guessing Games / / Flowers, Trees and Plants / Water and Waterscapes / Scenery/Skyscapes / Light, Shadow, and Reflections / Still Life Living Creatures / Human Portrait Japanfluence / Canada / Europe

  • Paestum, Italy on the day I arrived there; September 25, 2008 A very lovely day watching the sunset by the beach. Taken with an Olympus FE-220. Taken on the same day as these shots:

  • Taken October 26, 2008. This is not the best piece, but I felt like sharing because Venice was my favourite city in Italy. Unfortunately it was also where my cheap handheld Olympus FE-220 camera broke. It dropped during the Biennale, and a sharp pebble on the ground punctured the screen. I could still take pictures but I could not see what I was taking, and my camera did not have a view finder so everything was pure judgement. This happened on the last day of my Northern Italy field trip; so I spent the evening and the next morning doing “blind photography”. If I wanted to change a setting I could not see the menu, so I had to bear in mind how many times I were to press up, down, left or right to get the option, which by my gut instinct, I thought would be the best as I would not be able to preview it. I also had to make sure I kept my camera still for a reasonable amount of time for the night shot settings. We only spent one day in Venice and this was perhaps the most decent picture I got there. All my most decent pictures were from the night; during the day I was at the Biennale, and it was already dark by the time it was over. The next day there were too many people :P

  • My origami calendar The Loch Ness monster is one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology and has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie Source: Wikipedia So back when I was doing my internship in London, that mobii decided to throw another challenge at me despite that I was busy and didn’t have time :P I also couldn’t come up with a clever idea for a long time; I don’t simply like to fold something small and snap a photo of it; I like to create a scenario. Last night in my sleep an idea occured to me and today I did some experiments with glass bottles and flashlights to create some watery effects. It was rather fun. Nessie was folded from a 6×6mm piece of paper. This photo was taken with an Olympus FE-340, Septembre 21, 2009. • Self-portrait I folded a rose from a sheet of acetate. I don’t remember how big that was but that does not matter since this is one of my miniatures. This rose is the same type folded in my Snow Flower, but this one is folded from a transparent sheet. There were several challenges involved in creating this piece. Folding acetate is different from paper due to different physical properties. The central twist of the rose particularly does not maintain it’s form forever in acetate; I would have it held down or take the pic before it untwists itself. I generally have a hard time with self-portraits, and it was also difficult getting both my eye and the rose in focus; and getting the right crop. In addition my eyes are dark, but I also wanted to get enough light in them for the “faded” effect without over exposing the rose. Later I also took this using the same rose:

  • This is the same folded rose in my Fading Taken with an Olympus FE-340 on Oct 22, 2009. I put a weak flashlight underneath it; and had another weak flashlight shining one it. I took the photo into photoshop and did a bit of adjustment for a glassier effect. This work has been featured in: / ~Still Life Photography
