- Technotise Edit & I – Backgrounds sr / Na pozadine sam narocito obratio paznju . Ljudi su me cesto pitali zasto u filmu nema oblaka . A potom par godina kasnije i u ovom filmu .

I would like to congratulate Anurag Kashyap for the justification he has done to an entirely pessimistic story line. The direction, novelty, movie editing, spinning cameras and of course the acting; everything seemed fabulous to me but the most accentuating factor in any movie, the story itself, is a complete lack luster. A man surrendering his life for an unrequited love becomes alcoholic(drug addict), spend some dizzy moments with a sex worker and leads towards self destruction. And this is the whole concept of Devdas. I just wonder how this can amuse anybody. I felt that from the ages, some good directors, in a process of self evaluation subjected themselves to this tough exercise. Probably they think that if they can make this story sell, they will attain the peak of their skills. And the interesting thing is….they become successful too. Comparing it with Bhansali’s Devdaas: The later one had aesthetic sets giving appearance of a fairy land, palace like brothels, weighted poetry and enchanting music while the former one is more realistic, meticulously explored the reluctant part of the society (CSWs – the commercial sex workers) and of course the nicely experimented songs and music. / The former was love based and the current one lust based. / The former had a tragic end but Dev D has an optimistic climax. And this is where the director did an intelligent move and the faces of the audience at the exit didn’t look that gloomy which otherwise would have been disastrous. First 10 minutes are hilarious and the next 50 minutes keeps you engaged but after that it has just been dragged off, though nicely. Songs are good but just too many. Abhay Deol actually has driven the movie beautifully, played a blunt, obsessive and unapologetic character and it fell through him very genuinely. The co-stars Mahie and Koechlin have done some bold moves too. One of the scenes where Koehclin performed the telephonic seduction to her customers in different languages was something very bold and new do be screened in the Indian cinema. The director has also nicely blended the MMS scandal story and the ‘roadside dwellers trampled on by car’ incidence in the movie. The movie gives some bigger dimensions to the character of Chanda (Koehclin) by associating a past to it. To me, watching this movie will be a little embarrassing if I am accompanied by any female friend while the same can crack some big laughter with rusty old buddies. So, in all, if you a judge a movie by the quality of work hidden behind it, then it’s a must watch for you but if you go merely to entertain yourself then – All the best! Rating – 2.5/5

The battle for ‘the best amongst Khans’ is nowhere ceasing, it is in fact scrambling into a war with more Khans joining in. Irrfan Khan, Badrinath of Chandrakanta, my childhood demon whose big ovate protruding eyes would give me jitters throughout, now appears to bucket hundreds of expressions. Billu, a wretched barber from Budbuda has some conventional means to run his shop which is at the verge of collapse and the problems are multiplying in. But Billu is not gloomy, he is rather casual, he tries to fix up the matters but those never worked. One fine day the villagers come to know that actor Sahir Khan’s movie will be shot at their village and somehow the rumor spread that Sahir Khan was a good friend of Billu. The life never remained the same for Billu after that. This movie very well instantiates how dramatically the rumors spread out of nothing with only human-media involved and what shape it can acquire in a little time. Irrfan Khan’s spontaneity and blatant responses widened the cheeks of the audiences throughout the movie. Om Puri and Rajpal Yadav, more or less, performed the job for what they had been characterized in the film while I think Asrani was not well exploited. Two children at home produced the same nagging and screwing effect to Billu as the entire village did from outside. Lara Dutta smoothly carves into the role of a village women, Billu’s wife. The boasting and ostentation of the wife and children, the excitement and the craze to meet the superstar and the clamor which engulfs the entire village seems very realistic and has been nicely blended with satirical humor by Priyadarshan. One of the scenes in which Om Puri sits at the rattled chair in Billu’s Saloon, and the chair instantly collapses, had made audiences burst into laughter. For a fraction of second camera moves to Irrfan and look out how genuine appeared the disappointment on his face. This was the minute incidence, there are several such moments which would hostage the audiences in the magical spell of Irrfan. Another one was when Billu calls the guest house and talks to Sahir’s secretary. In the course of talk while the secretary was thrashing him and at very same moment the whole village surrounds the booth, just look at how he handles that situation only with his grins and notice the pain he felt… simply awesome! For those who are Anti-SRK, his interruption in the movie is a reason enough to relegate the overall rating of the movie. But come unbiased, SRK has done no damage. Though it’s true that he had been ostentatiously presented as larger-than-life actor. Some may think that the item numbers are breaking the continuity of the movie but for me those sultry and curvaceous performances by leading actresses on the flashy music were always welcomed even if it came as a discontinuity. Music by Pritam is good but seasonal. The movie has hit big sixes in the slog overs, the climax, which was a boost to the entire drama. The speech by SRK can overfill your heart and the tear ducts. Just that they could have made the camera angle a bit better, it was so close that It displayed all tobacco ruined teeth of SRK. The most awaited moment of the movie was when the two legendary Khans confront and you will see how easily Irrfan had done justice to it. Nobody else could have done like that. The movie is a good entertainer, a good pick for the family. MyRating – 3/5

Thanks a ton, Rakeysh, for not doing any ‘Rang de Basanti’ with the movie which could have left the audiences aback. The story doesn’t move anywhere for first one and half hours, but it will engross you. It’s like you sit at the back seat and enjoy the drive, have the glimpses of Chandni Chowk , the enormous Ramleela show, get acquainted with the happenings and mis-happenings in the life of nearby dwellers, listen some great numbers and stay tuned with the havoc created by Kala Bandar. The last half an hour brings the tides to the poise of the movie. I would request you to get serious and sensitive during that time because Rakeysh Mehra has chosen not to prepare the audience for what came out with a strong social message abruptly, and this is probably the only glitch I found in the movie. The whole movie revolves around a Kala Bandar which actually doesn’t exist. Roshan, Abhishek Bachhan, has come from USA with her grand ma to let her cherish her declining days at the nostalgic home. He doesn’t look like any NRI, though he has put up the American accent, he is simply Abhishek Bachhan, for what the fans come to watch in him. There are many characters involved in the movie who basically are the pillars in its built. Two feuding brothers (Om puri and Pavan Malhotra) have been amusing. The Haryanvi linguistics may sound harsh to ear-buds but I always find it comic and the justification to such a role is done by an authoritarian cop played by Vijay Raaz. Atul Kulkarni, Gobar (a temple caretaker) is I think was not well exploited. He doesn’t suit to a dumb character, though he too has played his part well. Lala (Prem Chopra), a sixty something moneylender and a lecherous photographer played by Cyrus Sahukar in illicit affairs with Lala’s teenaged wife. Ali (Rishi Kapoor), a well wisher and advisor to Roshan had once been silent lover of his mom, Fatima. He perhaps had the least presence on the screen but he played a deep character which you tend to admire. The most substantial of all the characters is an untouchable, garbage collector, Jalebi played by Divya Dutta, just watch out for her. Now if you want to know about Sonam Kapoor, for whom the whole fizz was about, she is just another character among the all I have mentioned above and as the numbers of characters are many, the space given to each is limited. The whole brisk and grace of Sonam Kapoor confines to the number Masakkali. But it has really been a treat to watch all so many talents together carving their niche out of the space given to them. Watch out for Waheeda Rehman’s classical steps in Genda Phool which reminisced of her legendary ‘Kaanto se kheench ke ye aanchal’, watch out for the spirit of Old Delhi: the narrow lanes, congested sprawling houses, a run over the terraces to catch a kite and of course Sonam’s Masakkali alone is worth the movie fair. Also see one of the scenes when Abhishek Bacchan gets philosophical with theory of mirror, watch out how these ideologies get scoffed and humiliated by both the communities, the director has well depicted the satire of human small-mindedness. As I already mentioned, the movie comes out with a strong message in the end but the director never tuned the mood of the audiences accordingly. For what seems like petty bickering among some neighbors suddenly turns into a riot and before you start acknowledging the intensity, it culminates down to a mishap which totally baffles you, thankfully that was not the climax. So in all, a watchable movie, acceptability will totally depend upon your flavor so don’t go with my rating, just watch and give your own verdict. My pick from the movie: / Ek Baadshah ne Tajmahal bana kar , udaya hai gareebon ki mohabbat ka mazaak / Mere mehboob kahin aur mila kar mujhse!! MyRating: 3/5 / Just an Informatica for those who do not know: / • Director of the movie is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, whose first movie Aks(2001), was a disaster but five years later he came out with a Bang to seal the mouth of critics with Rang de Basanti. / • The singer for Genda Phool is none other but the one who also sung the sensuous number ‘Namak ishq ka’ in Omkara, and the lady is the maestro Vishal Bhardwaj’s wife, Rekha Bhardwaj. / • The popular Masakkali song is written by Prasoon Joshi who was recently honored as Indian of the year(NDTV) Best Lyricist Award and was sung by silkroute’s ‘Dooba Dooba rehta hoon’ guy Mohit Chauhan. / • The music director- one and only A.R. Rehman
