Yes folks, it’s Movember. / Andrew sent me an invite to join a Movember team, so we’re both growing a mo to help raise funds and awareness for men’s health and fight male depression and prostate cancer. But Uncle Stevie, look at your photo! You can’t grow a mo! Well, I can if I shave, which I did this morning. I’ll post a pic soon. Here are some facts you may not know. Depression affects 1 in 6 men…Most don’t seek help. Untreated depression is a leading risk factor for suicide. Last year in Australia 18,700 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 2,900 died of prostate cancer – equivalent to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually. Men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy of males is 5 years less than females. To sponsor my Mo please go to http://www.movember.com/au/donate, enter my registration number which is 123657 and your credit card details. Or you can sponsor me by cheque made payable to the “Movember Foundation” clearly marking the donation as being for my Registration Number: 123657. Please mail cheques to: PO Box 292, Prahran VIC 3181. All donations over $2 are tax deductible. The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression. Now, I need some input. Do I go for the pencil thin porno mo? The good ol’ handlebars? Magnum PI? Will a month be long enough to have an evil villain’s twirly mo? / Tell me what to grow!
During Movember (the month formerly known as November) I’ll be growin a Mo. That’s right I’m bringing the Mo back because I’m passionate about changing men’s health and the fight against male depression and prostate cancer. Why… Depression affects 1 in 6 men…Most don’t seek help. To raise funds for Movember, I have decided to auction off a piece of my work that helps signify the idea. The piece depicts the depression associated with prostate cancer, the love for those who are affected, the unity displayed by those who participate, and most significantly the incredible joy and level of fun that comes with participation. The money raised by Movember, and specifically that of this particular piece, is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression. As such, all monies spent on the piece are tax-deductable. For those that have supported Movember in previous years you can be very proud of the impact it has had. Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title. Please contribute in anyway you can. Thanks for your support Rick More info is available at www.movember.com.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is an annual charity event held during November. At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their Mo, raising money along the way to benefit men’s health – specifically prostate cancer and male depression. Movember culminates at the end of the month at official Gala Partés, Mo-Office and Mo-Town parties where Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to be the Man of Movember. While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (ladies who support their guys or just love Mo’s!) form an important part of Movember by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés. But it’ s not all fun and games, so why the extreme behavior? Which ever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than for women. The obvious question is why? / Men lack awareness about the very real health issues they face. There is an attitude that they have to be tough – “a real man” – and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or go for regular medical checks. Movember aims to change these attitudes and make men’s health fun by putting the Mo back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men’s health issues, including: Prostate Cancer: because every year 2,900 Australian men die from prostate cancer and over 18,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Depression in Men: because one in six men experience depression at any given time but most don’t seek help. See

Steven Lippis ♥ The general rule when interviewing is to never ask questions involving yourself. I thought I’d do it anyway with Steve. I have given him such a hard time for such a long time over the years, the questions I did ask him about myself, were not the answers I expected. Let me introduce one of my best mates Steven ‘head like a door knob’ Lippis Steven Lippis….you should be congratulated and forever remembered for introducing me to redbubble :D How do you feel about that? I feel terribly jealous of course. You’ve become much more popular than I have on here. But I’m eternally grateful you still talk to me despite your new found fame. Also very happy for you! We have been friends for years, having first met on Deviant Art. How do you feel about that? I feel good about having known you so long. We don’t catch up in person nearly often enough, but you’re really one of the nicest people I know, even if you try to come across all mean and bad ass. Has redbubble lived up to your expectations? If not, what would you change about it? I’d say it has. I came looking for an alternative to deviantAds, and so far there’s been no ads, no paid accounts, the staff do their best to look after the artists, Australian based is a huge bonus, and so far I’ve only received good quality items (okay, except maybe the first calendar batch). Met plenty of great people with great art, I like that they only offer finished products, I can get straight prints at my local lab. If I’d change anything, it’s the forums. I’d scratch them completely. Groups too. The forums are full of nasty, condescending people (the way any forum on the net goes, sadly), and the groups far too open to abuse by hosts. The idea is great, but the reality of them so often isn’t all it could be. That said, I really don’t know how to make them better. Your most favorite piece of art on redbubble? Oh boy. I really don’t know. There’s a lot of good stuff, but one of the first things that comes to mind is my friend Jemina’s space hippo, Ingrid / It always makes me smile Your ultimate photographic goal? I’m not sure I have an ultimate photographic goal. As much as I share my work, in the end it’s a very personal thing. So long as I keep taking photographs I’m happy. I guess if I had a goal it would be to keep on learning. Every time I take photos I feel I’ve learnt something from it, hopefully something I can apply the next time. I’d like to keep doing that. In 50 years time I want to be discovering new ideas and improving my photography. There’s a long way to go, and I think that’s a key, to always strive to learn more. Your Camera of choice? Oh that’s a tough one. I’m currently using dual Nikons, F80 and D80. Nothing fancy, but they do the job. If I had a choice… on a personal level I’d like to be shooting medium format film. Maybe a Mamiya 645. For the bulk work, digital is the go, and I’d really like a D3 and D3x. They both have their strengths, and the D3 would be great for all the low light stuff. I have a ticket to the next Broncos game in one hand and a poo speciman from a Titans player in the other….I’m offering you one of them. Which would you choose and why? If the Broncos game was against the Titans or Panthers, I’d take the ticket. Otherwise I’m going to have to go with your poo specimen. Because everyone knows a ticket to the Broncos is worth less than shit. iriot Am I cool or evil or both? You’re cool, and I think not as evil as you’d like people to believe. The name of a song you remember from your childhood? I’m having trouble remembering last week, my childhood is a toughy! A few do come to mind. Demis Roussos’ Goodbye My Love, Goodbye comes to mind though. Summer days, the house opened up to the breeze, and my mother playing the vinyl while us kids were in the pool. / Cold Chisel also features a lot. Spending days in Dad’s workshop with MMM on the radio, a lot of the songs that stuck in my head were Cold Chisel, I only found out who they were a lot later. Steve, you are ‘good people’ and thank you for the work you have done with me and others for the Cancer and Leukemia Foundations. Cheers x ;)

Every Rat Rhymes I attend, at this point I expect I’ll do a journal. I am loving them! And yesterday will stay in my head and heart for eternity I expect – the first time that my beautiful niece Emily (aka Grampian Beauty and Sweetheart Smile) ever performed before Parts 2 – 5 of Mallow Rat Rhymes continued in a gorgeous beer garden. My wrap. It was such a glorious day and many people continued the frivolity that evening over at the beautiful and welcoming home of Christine. Divine mingling and sharing of music, food, thoughts, laughter, wine, insights, conversation, beer – just when I think it would be impossible to surpass my enjoyment of the first RR I attended in Oct – guess what? Even better! Memorable day and night indeed! So, I carry a small red notebook in my bag and jotted down some gems of lines (copyright of the respective artists – just noted here for posterity and permanent appreciation) / NB Unfortunately i killed too many brain cells last night to have always written down who uttered them or to know which poem they came from, but if anyone doesn’t want them mentioned in my journal – let me know, and I’ll remove promptly) Karl Schenk read something that was a sister piece to his own work – a gorgeous Response courtesy of Wendy / He speaks fluent solar / Both passive and active In Forward Karl mentioned overt optimism and energetic enthusiasm From the brilliant mind of Steven Smart / We could be so pointless together / ...Devotion / ...Debasement / ...I want to be your dog / This poem floored me – awesome! Steve’s Fashionista was another highlight, which included killer lines like / elegant yet simple lines / What did you think was so wrong with you? / But would you jump Paris too? / I don’t get invited to all the hip parties / They should have told him that suicide is so cool right now RaymondoAntonio was in his usual fine form; highlights included Jimi Salvador Sandra – I got to sit near one of my favourite ladies of the bubble and she so kindly shared that she likes my journals. I did feel a mite envious though when Ray gave her an autographed copy of Salvador – I so want one too! Michael continued a superb stream of consciousness piece, and my favourite part of it was For what is a pervert but the embodiment of otherness thought-provoking stuff – loved it! G’day folks. Years ago, I would never have envisaged writing about depression from first-hand experience. Well, I am and I hope by doing so it may prompt others to action. Last year it was suggested to me by a couple of family members that I see my General Practitioner. It’s good that those close to me could see a change in my health and make that suggestion. Being a bloke who thinks that everything will sort itself out, in this instance it hasn’t. Recently, I made a move and made an appointment with my GP. My situation is still being assessed, however I’m very much looking forward to a healthier me. I’ve had eight sessions with a psychologist to date and things are going okay. Thankfully, I still have enough marbles floating around inside my cranium to realise that there’s got to be some changes enacted by me to become healthier. Anyway, enough of me. I’m happy to talk about depression with anyone here, whether it be publicly on this journal or privately via bubblemail. My motivation is to raise awareness and provide information to those who feel they may need advice. A few things I’d like to mention which may assist: Australia’s national depression initiative, beyondblue, is an organisation which provides information about depression to consumers, carers and health professionals. A beaut port of call for those thinking of taking that first step for assistance. / www.beyondblue.org.au There’s an excellent book authored by Dr Sarah Edelman titled: Change your thinking which deals with positive and practical ways to overcome stress, negative emotions and self defeating behaviour. Available for purchase online at Borders. Highly recommended. / www.borders.com.au It’s Movember. This is where we can all raise awareness about men’s health issues, encourage one another, and help those organisations which can do with support. I’m taking part in the Movember initiative this year, and for the first time in my life I’ll be growing a moustache. As someone who knows first-hand what depression is like, I feel that using my clean shaven face and knowledge can help and inspire others. If you’d like to support me during Movember, click on my Movember link or graphic to donate or leave a comment. Thanks for reading folks. And fellas, go for it. Good luck. Darren’s Motivation “To raise awareness of how men can seek assistance for depression. I encourage blokes who believe they may need a helping hand to check out the beyondblue website and then seek professional advice from their General Practitioner. I have done this and I’m now working on strategies to become healthier.
