this was sent to me by a friend’s daughter A Dog’s Purpose(from a 6-year-old). Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish / Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little / bo y Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we / couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure / for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for / six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might / learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family / surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, / that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker / slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or / confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud / about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who / had been listening quietly, piped up, ‘I know why.’ Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d / never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, ‘People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life—like / loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?’ The Six-year-old / continued, ‘Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay / as long.’ Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like: When loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy. Take naps. Stretch before rising. Run, romp, and play daily. Thrive on attention and let people touch you. Avoid biti ng when a simple growl will do. On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass. On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree. When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body. Delight in the / simple joy of a long walk. Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not. If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it. When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them / gently. ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

Okay that would be me! I was asked and very reluctantly took the job for posing for some shots for a medical technology company named “Oasis”. No…I’m not putting a pregnancy test in my mouth although I kept laughing as I was being photographed because it sure looked like one. / Actually it’s a saliva collector! Really cool. It’s a new way of collecting saliva in the medical industry, quickly easily and safely. The shots are being used on a medical website. / Anyway…it’s kind of an odd thing for me as I do not model or anything but hey if random jobs come up that pay money, I’m in! ;D Just sharing my weird venture into the many projects I’ve been involved in lately. ...although it’s not the weirdest job lately….I actually had a request from a gentleman who tried some of my homeade beef strogonoff, that if I could make him a batch a month he would pay me. / Of course I’m going to cause that’s a great story to tell future kids…”at one point I was actually making stroganoff and modeling with pregnancy tests in my mouth!!”... ??? ;D “Will work for food….” apparently I “Will make food for food!” LOL! XOXO

I sit here contemplating the oral surgery that I need to have done tomorrow which is not the only dental work I must have done, it’s just the continuation of what ultimately must happen to preserve my health, my ability to eat, and my dignity. / I am generally fed up with the lack of affordable health care for all in the United States but my anger and frustration at this time, is much more specific. / Why are health insurance companies allowed to ignore the mouth as being part of the human body? Why are they permitted to require a separate insurance plan to cover things that go wrong in one’s mouth and then even with the best of dental insurance plans, it is rare that any significant amount of the total cost will be covered. Why even if a dental problem is caused by a medical problem (as it is in my case) is it still allowed to be separated by the health insurance company as “dental” so they don’t have to pay for the treatment? / WHY?????????? / The mouth is part of the human anatomy just like any other body part. It can get infected, need surgery, have cancer and cause pain amongst other things. In fact, it can cause more pain than many other parts of the body and yet it is allowed to be ignored by health insurance as if it doesn’t exist. Infections of the mouth can go into your brain and kill you, yet if the infection stays in your mouth, sorry….no insurance….you can only get help to pay for that infection if indeed it does go to your brain landing you in a hospital. Does that make sense? I think not. / If I had a severe infection on the external part of my cheek and if that infection required surgery, no problem, health insurance covers that…....but oh my….....it’s in on the inside of my cheek…......TOO BAD FOR ME….because that’s the MOUTH. / After a visit to an oral surgeon for a consultation last week, he prescribed antibiotics to treat a severe infection and told me to come back one week later to have the “bad” teeth removed. Sure, doc…no problem…...and what is the fee for that? $250 per tooth. Well, I need six teeth removed….so let’s do the math….... that will cost me $1500.00 plus the $150.00 consult fee for a total of $1650.00 and that’s JUST for my lower jaw. I will also need to have teeth removed from my upper jaw and then I will be allowed the pleasure of having replacement teeth made at lord knows what cost. Oh, and did I mention these are all FRONT TEETH? / And will the oral surgeon allow for a payment plan? Yes, but it’s not much of a plan. I must pay half the total cost up-front. I don’t have $825.00 in my back pocket. I have lots of bills and limited income just like so many other people these days. / As I was convalescing on the couch last week with a heating pad on my face, doing salt water rinses and diligently taking antibiotics I watched a lot more television than usual. Animal Planet was airing one of their animal rescue shows. An emaciated stray dog with a bad leg was rescued and taken into a foster home to get well. The foster family took a lot of time hand feeding the dog in small amounts to get him accustomed to eating normally without becoming sick from eating too much and they were successful in getting him to a normal weight. Unfortunately, his leg did not improve…....BUT…...a wonderfully kind veterinarian offered to do a FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR surgery on the dog, GRATIS (at no charge) so he would be able to walk normally. A wonderful act of kindness for this dog. / I should be so lucky.

Welcome back class, / Hope your keeping up with this tutorial. Now we are ready for the mouth and lips. MOUTH (hatching shadows) / Using a 7H I begin roughing out the shadows with a few strokes across the upper lip and under the lower, finally add a few hint strokes at each corner of the mouth. / / Figure 005A (hatching shadows) MOUTH (reinforcing shadows) / Now switching to a softer 2B, I reinforce the initial strokes, adding a few stich strokes on the edge of the lower lip. I also add a small hammock shade below the lower lip. / / Figure 005B (reinforcing shadows) / MOUTH (adding body) / Still using the 2B, I strengthen the shadows and texture giving the lips more body, still rough strokes but stronger definition. / / Figure 005C (adding body) / MOUTH (flow lines lower lip) / Switching to the 7H, I sketch out the lower lip flow lines fanning out from the centro of the mouth. You can keep these lines straight or curve them which gives a more fuller look to the lower lip. / / Figure 005D (flow lines lower lip) / MOUTH (hatching lower lip) / Still using the 7H, I cross hatch along the edge opf the lower lip and across the lower corners spilling out onto the skin around the mouth. / / Figure 005E (hatching lower lip) MOUTH (softening corners) / Switching over to the 2B, I soften the shading around the corners and just below the corners where the lips spill into the skin. / / Figure 005F (softening corners) MOUTH (tidy up) / Using the softer 2B and then onto the harder 7H, I tidy up the lips, feathering very gently around the edges and again as in the nose, ever so fine across it. I fine shade across the whole of the lips blending it in uniformly. I use a sharp 2B to pick out a few cracks coming from the top of the lower lip. I also use the kneadable putty rubber to softly remove shading from the top lip. / / Figure 005G (tidy up) MOUTH (face so far) / Now we have the face so far, Hair, eyes, nose and mouth. It’s really starting to take shape, but don’t hurry it off just yet, there is still some work to do on the skin and ears. / / Figure 005H (face so far) I hope that this has been of some benefit to anyone out there, I’d love to see your results.
