The sun slowly sets over the Appalachians of the Smoky Mountains bringing the end to the day. Shot was taken from the Clingmans Dome Parking lot in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park !

Taking a few minutes before my “Days End”. The colors are much cooler showing why these are known as the lower Blue Ridge Mountains. The foggy mist is why these particular mountains became known as the Smokys the colors and layers of ridges drew me to this shot. So often in making sunset/sunrise shots photographers shoot one or two shots and move on. This time of day is one of rapidly changing tones. Some of the most dramatic shots can be made after most have left or got there. When the clouds are illuminated by the sun after/before it has pasted the horizon. Those photographers willing to slow down an spend some time will be the ones fully enjoying this time of day when the warm/cool colors met, mingle, and drift apart. As you can see between the 2 shots 2 minutes make a dramatic difference. Bodie Ghost Town in the Seirra Nevada Mountains in Eastern California. This 1800’s Gold town once had a thriving population of 10,000 people. It was a true wild western town with gun fights, saloons and a huge redlight district.

In February 2009, this image placed third in the U.S. Parks Wildlife Shots challenge hosted by the AMERICA’s National Parks and WILDLIFE Habitat group. A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898 The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone. A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses. You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. Taken from the parking lot at Clingmans Dome,GSMNP. The mountain was named for Brigadier General Thomas Lanier Clingman, by Arnold Guyot a geographer. Clingman in the 1850’s was the first to accurately measure the height of the mountain. The mountain was called Kuwa’hi (the mulberry place) by the Cherokee. This is where the legendary great bear chief and doctor dwelled.In whose magic bath the wounded bears are restored to health…Settlers first called it Smoky Dome then later was called Mount Buckley before Guyot named it offically

The Valley of the Waters is @ Wentworth Falls In the Blue Mountains. The Valley of the Waters may be reached by a direct walking track, which descends steeply through temperate rainforest. Cool, moist, shady conditions prevail, and the area is a rich wildlife habitat. / Apart from the regular bushwalkers, you are likely to meet wetsuit-clad abseilers who like to take a more direct, and wet, route down the numerous waterfalls. / From the valley, National Pass takes the walker to the Wentworth Falls, then back up the cliffs to the village. / The Nature Track, & other cliff-top routes, make a good alternative for walkers who prefer to avoid the strenuous climb in and out of the valley. During my travels in six states in the past week, I finally landed in Durbin West Virginia, where I stayed with a friend of mine. This old coal steam engine depot is in her little historical town of Durbin. We finally got a chance to ride this train that soon will be reaching it’s centinial (100th) birthday in 2010. This engine is called The Durbin Rocket One of three coal steam engines actually running in the world. When we came to a short stop, I took advantage of shooting this (and yes, have quite a few shots while riding it) Something about the elderly gentleman looking at this engine remembering when he was a boy and rode trains like this enticed me to shoot it in black and white. This has not be converted, I changed settings on camera to shoot in BW, I will be adding more photos of my travels after I return from Texas this weekend. This was shot in SS priority, F-stop of 8.0, Exposure at 1/125, ISO of 400, Exposure Compensation at 0 / Best if viewed larger.

What is it about trains? Something about them is so romantic, you see scenes you normally wouldnt see riding in a car. Maybe it’s the sound of the locomotive, the rocking of the car you’re in, the overall atmosphere. / This was shot in West Viriginia, I insisted on doing at least one train ride, especially when this particular one was just 2minutes from where my friend lives. Quite a challenge hanging over in the open car we were in trying to get just that right angle with the right light. The colors were spectacular while I was in WV. Shot this in SS mode with SS set at 1/500 (had to compensate for moving and me hand holding) / F-stop at F 5.6, / ISO at 400, / focal length at 70mm, / and exposure compensation at 0

We spent a weeks holiday in this area, and the weather was pretty poor most days, I had a hard time pulling anything good out of my Canon 40D !! / However, on the last morning, I woke early to a glimmer of light, and planned to shoot the early morning light falling on the Summer Isle. Of course, that didn’t work out, so feeling despondant, drove around the corner to turn around. / Glad I did, for less than five minutes, the light played ball ! / I knew I couldn’t shoot for a conventional shot, far too much contrast with those sunbeams, so I settled for a three – shot , hand-held, HDR image. There wasn’t time to set up the tripod, but I didn’t need it, since great depth of field was not required on this occasion. Luckily I had my IS ( image stabilisation ) lens already fitted ! The light rapidly disappeared under a big blanket of cloud, which remained with us in the North West for over a WEEK !! / It was however, a magical moment, filled with adrenaline ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, Canon 17-85mm f4.0-5.6 IS USM lens set at 79mm, 0EV, -2EV, +2EV, RAW, iso 100, cloudy wb, then processed in Photomatix, and further enhanced in Adobe Photoshop CS3, where I had to do some more selective Tone Mapping, in particular the moorland, where I wanted a little ‘pool’ of light. I also helped along the sunbeams with a subtle use of ‘dodging and burning’. / LAB colour was also employed, gently. The ‘warm up ’ photo filter was also used in Layers, and eradicated from areas not required by using Layer masks and painted out. / The result was what I had in my mind when I saw the scene, and could not be described as a true record of the scene before me. / This is the Digital Age, let us enjoy it, and use it to advantage !! We really don’t get much snow on the West Coast of Scotland, because of the influence of the Gulf Stream, and on the rare occasion it does fall, it is soon gone!! / Beinn Bhan is one of the peaks of the Applecross range, seen here from near Ardarroch, Loch Kishorn, on a gorgeous Winter’s afternoon. just as the sun was going down…at around 3.30pm !! Shot on my Canon EOS40D, tripod, polariser, f22, 1/10th sec, iso 100, auto wb, RAW file processed in PS CS3, levels/curves/selective colour/hue and saturation. MORE OF SCOTLAND HERE.. /

The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Taken on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, / canon 17-85mm IS lens at 17mm. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton.
