At Day’s End As the sun goes down over the front range mountains of Denver, Colorado, the Sunflowers turn, in anticipation of the sun coming back up in the morning. Photographed in a field where all you can see for miles and miles is Sunflowers….billions of Sunflowers. An entire sea of yellow and gold….caught in my lens for a fleeting instant, where the whole world was at peace…. When the thunder comes and you are standing at 12,000 feet, this is probably the last place you want to be. So when the thunder comes and you are the highest object in the Colorado Rockies….run!!! Lightning strikes kill people in the high country every year and needles to say I pretty much high tailed it after shooting this, back to the car as quick as I could. Loveland Pass is a Colorado landmark, and looking here you look out over the Continental Divide. It is the highest mountain Pass in the United States to be plowed and stayed open year around, as trucks carrying hazardous chemicals must cross this way instead of using the Eisenhower Tunnel. I went ahead and decided to process this in HDR using Photomatix and final output through PS CS2, the reason for the HDR was to catch the dynamic light (which seems like I am always chasing) and the drama in the clouds with the approaching thunderstorm. LucisArt used for final detail work. This shot was taken at the Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The most amazing electrical storm came through. It was quite a ways in the distance. The cloud coverage was interesting which sat low over our heads. Lightning flashed about every three seconds. It was truly spectacular. It never rained where I was standing. Noise Reduction software applied due to the high ISO setting. I put the camera on a tripod and kept clicking. The pool house was in the foreground and Cheyenne Mountain in the background.

A Conversation With the Clouds Captured at an elevation of 11,990 ft (3,655 m), standing atop Loveland Pass is like being able to touch heaven and the clouds. When I captured this, the slight hint of the scent of snow was in the air, and conditions up here can change literally by the second. It is right along the Continental Divide, and the views from up here are simply paradise! I began to climb when we got the region..And then, I climbed around 5000 ft.. Then the mist began.. So I had to stop climbing cause it was getting risky and I dont like making mistakes “in purpose”.. I waited around 10 mins but saw the mist was coming up on me.. So I gave up and decided to go back down.. :)) This time it didnt want me to climb.. So I got back and after 5 mins, storm began with the wind.. :(( (anyways, I did the right ) / In this week we will try again and again… Although we get the forecast from the satellite, it doesnt somehow match (or it changes too fast) :)) I keep posting them in serie :) / This one is one of the first shots when I got to region.. / Well I keep trying :)) TAke Care All :)) / Region Arhavi -TURKEY

A Stormy Autumn Colorado’s Longs Peak shrouded in Autumn thunderstorm clouds, stands towering above the quaking Aspen below. This scene was really something to see….the atmosphere was just to die for. The way the contrast played out with the yellow and gold Aspens against that dark sky was astonishing, the light was really changing fast so I had to be fairly quick while shooting this. Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. The Aspen Stand This shot got some really good feedback over on FredMiranda.com so I thought that I would go ahead and share it with you all here as well. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the type of Fall Aspen shot I have wanted, but for some reason, whenever I have shot these kinds of shots in the past, they just never really have come out. Well, I think it did this time. It is almost to much of an iconic Colorado in Autumn photo, but I think one thing makes this one stand out from others. The lines. If you notice the black areas of the bark on the Aspen, that is actually where the Elk have eaten away at the bark. However, I like how it creates the line from left to right, going up higher as it goes to the right. I didn’t even notice this until I was processing the shot, and I suppose you can blame that on negative space. I suppose you can say that I am happy with the shot, I finally got the Autumn image I have always wanted. For those of you who don’t know how beautiful the Colorado Aspen’s are in Autumn, just ask Judy, she will be glad to tell ya! Let me know what ya think! / —-John

We took a walk over to Camasunary beach in some pretty murky weather ( the Isle of Skye usually has perfect weather of course, HA HA !) / Sitting down enjoying a flask of coffee, there was a brief glimpse of sun, giving me a great photographic opportunity, which I took advantage of very hurriedly ! I processed my single RAW file in Photomatix, (HDR) and did a few more tweaks in PS CS3. Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, with polariser, underexposed by one stop to retain the darkness of the sky, f22, mounted on a tripod of course ! lens was my kit lens, 18-55mm Canon, which I no longer use having upgraded ! Well this shot did really well over on deviantART so I thought that I would also share with you all here too. (I honestly wasn’t expecting the 1600 odd favorites it received over there, took me by surprise!) Storm clouds fight with the evening sunset over the Colorado Rockies & Longs Peak. Every now and then I like to get a little artistic with my HDR’s and this is one of those, there is no right, no wrongs when it comes to photography and artistic interpretation, and i realize that not everyone likes that, nor this style, that is fine, I respect that, but I also ask the same of you to respect my creativeness, too! The beautiful Isle of Skye. / Typical Scottish Highland weather, bursts of sunlight, lasting for three minutes if you are lucky, between heavy showers that soak you to the skin, lasting around five hours. Or more. LOL ! / You don’t have to be mad to live here, but it helps, as the saying goes ! A magic place all the same ! / Have you ever tried to set up a tripod where the heather and bog myrtle grow in abundance, teetering on the brink of a raging burn? (Burn = river) It ain’t easy ! / It causes you endless grief, for one thing, the blasted tripod wobbles around, and it disturbs those dear wee midges, which bite you to the brink of insanity, then you have a wee puppy craving attention threatening to knock the tripod/camera/you into the burn, and I can’t swim either. / Combined with Family members watching your attempts and laughing then getting bored, it is a small wonder that any images get produced at all. Professional ?? Ha Ha Ha Ha !! / Hysterical laughter ! Shot on my CANON EOS 40D, mounted, sort of, on my tripod, polarising filter, f22, 1/4 sec, 17-85mm IS Canon lens, at 22mm, iso100, auto wb, three shot RAW files processed in Photomatix, then fiddled around with in PS CS3, with some more selective tone mapping applied. LAB colour to finish. / Slight vignette. I always wanted a “classic” kind of Elk shot, where one can see the steam coming out of their nose and mouth after the Bugle, with snow falling and such, and I think I finally was able to get it ! The Russel Burn tumbles down from the mountains of Applecross, seen as you take the spectacular drive over the Bealach na Ba ( the Pass of the Cattle ) single track road. It is an old drover’s route, and rises to 2,053 feet, from where, on a clear day, you can see outstanding views of the Western Isles in all their glory. Mostly though, it will be so cold and windy that you will will not want to stay too long !! It is a very wild and remote area, so incredibly beautiful. Taken on a Canon EOS 40D, mounted on tripod, / canon 17-85mm IS lens at 17mm. Polariser fitted, ( to slow the shutter for more blur) / f23, three shot hdr (-2EV , +2EV and 0EV …..from a minus 1 stop underexposure reading 0f f23, 1/15 sec. on Aperture priority ) iso 100, Auto wb, RAW files converted in Photomatix and Adobe CS3. / Finished with a little Orton.
