  • Young couple in love enjoying a sunset in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, USA. Other works in the Cades Cove Collection: About Cades Cove: Cades Cove (formally known as Tuckaleechee Cove) is found in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, USA. Cades Cove / was a working farm valley until the 1930’s when the National Park was formed. The Park Service has attempted to recreate the 19th century feel of this farming valley and preserve it for future generations. Before the first white settler arrived on the scene, Cades Cove had been a part of the Cherokee Indians’ domain. Abrams Creek and Abrams Falls are features named for a prominent Cherokee chief named “Old Abram” who at one time lived in a village at Chilhowee on the Little Tennessee River. According to tradition, Old Abram’s wife was named Kate, and Cades (Kate’s) Cove was named after her. Please enjoy these other images:

  • Toklat in his zen mode draped over the top stair, after a rough day hiking and playing. I named him Toklat, which is a river and glacier in the Denali National Park and Preserve, after doing some editing and layout work for the Denali park service. Toklat is a very sweet and uncomplicated dark-chocolate Retriever. He doesn’t chase moose. I hope he won’t chase bears. Taken for a challenge in the “Man’s Best Friend” group, and, well, because I can’t resist taking photos of our two Labs. Toklat placed in the top ten of the “Man’s Best Friend” challenge. You should see him when he gets excited (this isn’t the time). Toklat’s looks earned him a feature at “Man’s Best Friend” – Thank you! Nikon D200, Nikon 105mm VR lens. 105mm, f/5 , 1/100, ISO 100, -0.3ev. Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX 2, manual exposure. Unedited, no post-processing.

  • We took a walk over to Camasunary beach in some pretty murky weather ( the Isle of Skye usually has perfect weather of course, HA HA !) / Sitting down enjoying a flask of coffee, there was a brief glimpse of sun, giving me a great photographic opportunity, which I took advantage of very hurriedly ! I processed my single RAW file in Photomatix, (HDR) and did a few more tweaks in PS CS3. Shot on a Canon EOS 40D, with polariser, underexposed by one stop to retain the darkness of the sky, f22, mounted on a tripod of course ! lens was my kit lens, 18-55mm Canon, which I no longer use having upgraded ! • I love rainy, overcast, windy days. Someone has to, I suppose. The pink/purple of the fireweed has yet to reach its full splendor. As Alaskan legend has it, when fireweed blooms all the way to the top of its spire – the six-week countdown to winter begins. Some of us can hardly wait. It felt great to get out in the elements! Featured in DSLR Users Only – An honor. Thank you. Featured in Alaska ~ Beyond Your Dreams – An honor.
