Sunrise at Syme Hut, perched atop fantham’s peak, a subsidiary cone, on the awesome volcano Mt Taranaki. In the distance the central plateau volcanoes of Ngauruhoe, Tongariro and Ruapehu are silhouetted against the colours of the rising sun. We’ve tramped/climbed to many of the Dept of Conservation huts around New Zealand but this is one of the most amazingly located we’ve come across.
Playa Blanca, Lanzarote – seen from the ferry which runs to Corralejo, Fuerteventura. Behind is the volcanic mountain (crater) Montana Roja. / June 2007.
I shot this from Fujiyoshida City, just down on the south eastern side of Fuji-san. Nikon D300 / 80-200mm f/2.8
All 3, Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe are all volcanoes. / Ruapehu erupted last year, Tongariro in 1977 and Ngauruhoe in 1975.
Bogota Columbia
Since moving from the UK in 2007, and the depths of the Welsh countryside, to the middle of Tokyo – the world’s largest metropolis – I have been amazed to find so much nature in the city. Here’s a collection of some of that Tokyo city nature, plus a few things from when I have ventured out a little farther afield and one or two things from back in Wales.

Mount Rainier is an active stratovolcano (also known as a composite volcano) in Pierce County, Washington, located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle, Washington, in the United States. It is the highest peak in the Cascade Range and Cascade Volcanic Arc at 14,411 feet (4,392 m). The mountain and the surrounding area are protected within Mount Rainier National Park. With 26 major glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states with 35 square miles (91 km²) of permanent snowfields and glaciers. The summit is topped by two volcanic craters, each over 1,000 feet (300 m) in diameter with the larger east crater overlapping the west crater. Geothermal heat from the volcano keeps areas of both crater rims free of snow and ice, and has formed the world’s largest volcanic glacier cave network within the ice-filled craters.A small crater lake about 130 feet (40 m) by 30 feet (10 m) in size and 16 feet (5 m) deep, the highest in North America with a surface elevation of 14,203 feet (4,329 m), occupies the lowest portion of the west crater below more than 100 feet (30 m) of ice and is accessible only via the caves.

El Teide is the highest Spanish mountain, located on the Canary Island of Tenerife. With its highest peak at 3,718 metres above sea level it is a quite amazing phenomenon – within just a few km drive from the beach to the peak. From its base it is also the third highest active volcano in the world, having last erupted in 1909. I am fascinated by this natural wonder and its surroundings and will upload more photos and information in future. Well worth the visit if you ever go to Tenerife but make sure you take warm clothes and check out the weather beforehand. You can only go to the very top with an advance permit. World Heritage Site, Teide National Park Location: Near Santiago del Teide, Tenerife, Spain. / Nikon D200, Sigma 18-200mm.
