June 2007 I’m on a roll with mixed mediums! This one is a mix of calico, hessian, shellac, paints, string… I have tried to capture the essence and textures of Africa… It smells like Africa funny enough, could be attributed to the sage burning at the time of creation. Look out for the symbols… Table Mountain, Tribal Patterns, The bushveld, animals and animal totems. x Carmen

“The air that was rushing into my lungs was icy cold. The climb to the top was slow and exhausting. I hitched my backpack over my shoulder trying to ease the weight somewhat. As we reached the summit I knew with one glance that it was all worth it….........” / Macro photograph from a rock! /

The sand dunes at Mesquite Flats, just outside Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. Having spent the night sleeping on a park bench at the camp ground outside Furnace Creek, I raced up here ahead of the sunrise for a nice 5.30am photoshoot to make the most of the early light. I love how low horizontal sunlight brings out the texture in the dunes- by 8am this place is pretty much a washout, but I had a good sixty minutes of gorgeous tones and contrast… and yes, left my tracks all over the sand. Another spot I can’t wait to head back to someday. May 2007.

The sand dunes at Mesquite Flats, close to Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. From the highway it doesn’t look like much, but once you get in amongst the dunes, the photographic opportunities are endless. I loved how the windswept ripples leant this photo a sense of depth and movement- definitely one of my favourite from the shoot. I got lucky with the early light- at 6am the sunrise cast the ripples in perfect contrast and getting nice-looking pics was as easy as shooting dolphins in a barrel. May 2007.

“I awoke with the sound of wood chopping in the distance. I reluctantly climbed out from under the colourful goats hair blanket hoping I could dress quickly, as the icy mountain air rushed under the blanket. I could smell the smoke in the air as the local inhabitants of the village started the fires to cook our breakfast. What culinary delights would I find this morning? Travelling to these remote areas was always full of surprises, especially when it came to food! I lifted the latch and opened the wooden door…..I gasped as the chilly air filled my lungs…and there before me I saw in all it’s glory….what we had travelled so far to see…....Mystic Mountain!” Macro photograph taken from a rock….aperture priority, taken in late afternoon light. My passion is macro photography, I love to find landscapes and abstract art in rocks and bark that looks like a painting worthy of hanging in a gallery!
