  • Built around 1815 this church in the hills of Chimayo, New Mexico, is considered a masterpiece of colonial folk art and architecture and has been deemed a National Historic Landmark. Famed for its miraculous cross and the healing powers of the soil, the Prayer Room is filled with candles, cards & crude hand made shrines as well as crutches and braces testifying to miracles. • This image is taken from a collection of work titled ‘Journey into the Pure Lands’. These images were taken in the winter of 2003 during a four week trek through the Nepal Himalayas Everest region. We climbed as far as Gokyo, reaching 5500m above sea level. I undertook this journey for a number of reasons. That year had been difficult and had involved loss, at this point in my life I felt that I had nothing to lose but to take up the challenge of trekking a mountain in Nepal. I had always dreamed of doing this, not only for the landscape, but also so I could draw near to the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, something that has influenced my life for a long time. I was not sure what I wanted to find, maybe a challenge to revitalize my life, or to give myself time and space to find some clarity. What I did find was one hell of a challenge! The struggles caused by temperatures dropping as low as -15 and the impact of high altitude really helped me put into perspective some of the emotional adversity I had experienced. The richness and mysticism was a photographers dream, but most of all I was inspired by the peace, humour and great strength I found amongst the Tibetan and Nepalese people despite the adversity they had faced. There was a sense of space and clarity, not just in the landscape, but also amongst many of whom we met. At the end of a hard days trekking the clouds would gather beneath us forming a white blanket almost real enough to walk on. I could describe it as nothing less than the pure lands depicted within Buddhist imagery.

  • Sanctuary – Middle English, from Old French sainctuarie, from Late Latin s?nctu?rium, from Latin s?nctus, sacred, sanctify. Sacred place, especially the most sacred part of a sacred place. In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, a sanctuary served as asylum, a place of refuge for persons fleeing from violence or from the penalties of the law. To injure a person in sanctuary or to remove him from it forcibly was considered sacrilege. In Egypt the temples of Osiris and Amon offered the right of sanctuary. Under the Greeks all temples enjoyed this privilege, and certain ones, like the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, were known throughout the Mediterranean world as a haven for fugitives. In Rome fugitive slaves often sought sanctuary. Christian churches were given the right of sanctuary by Constantine I. Abuses of sanctuary, tending to encourage crime, led to its curtailment and abolition. Modern penal codes no longer recognize the right of sanctuary.

  • “Where There is Light, There Must Also Be Darkness”, “Every man has a good and bad angel attending on him, all his life long.” – Robert Burton (“Anatomy of Melancholy”) “Man is his own star, and the soul that can, render an honest and a perfect man,Commands all light, all influence, all fate: nothing to him falls early or too late. Our acts are angels are, for good or ill: our fatal shadows that walk by us still.” – John Fletcher (“Upon An Honest Man’s Fortune”) “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” – Bible: 2 Corinthians (11:13-15)

  • First Light of The Lord Watching this sunrise come up in Rocky Mountain National Park was akin to witnessing paradise unfold before your eyes. Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and stunning sunrises I have seen in a long while. • PLEASE VIEW LARGE.. !! This was taken early in the morning as we arrived for our journey to the Elephant Seal area. Mists and light and Peace. Taken in the Año Nuevo SNR State Natural Reserve Northern California / ELEPHANT SEAL AFTERNOON I have used this form of morning meditation for quite some time and feel the ease of this practice and results in a more generous day with better focus. This is a meditation to begin the day. In a seated pose, focus on your breath. Cultivate a steady, relaxed breath. Then ask yourself: What is my intention today? After posing the question, rest your attention on the out-breath. This creates a spaciousness of attention on the in-breath. There is no direction for the in-breath. Do not get carried away by thinking, but also do no tightly control the attention. Continue to notice each out breath. Sit until you are struck by a clarity of intention. It comes not by chasing it down with thinking, but by stilling the mind and creating space. It may take a few minutes, or much longer. If no specific intention announces itself to you, simply commit to acting ethically and with mindfulness. That is certainly an intention that we can all practice each day. This meditation seems simple, and it is simple. It’s power lies in its ability to help us act intentionally throughout the day. If you practice this meditation each morning, you will find yourself more ‘awake’ behind the wheel of your life*.

  • ...
