Watsons Crags are in Kosciuszko National Park and in my opinion is the most spectacular alpine ridge line in Australia. On this particular occassion I had spent the day skiing out from Thredbo to camp at the frozen Lake Albina on a spectacular little knoll overlooking the Crags. This shot was taken halfway through dinner at my personal restaurant. The heater at the restaurant was pathetic, but the view… For other shots from this area check out my Kosciuszko gallery. The highest peak in the alps around Val Gardena, Italy (also known as Groedn, Austria. It’s a World War I thing. Language-wise, the area is if anything more German/Austrian). The view from the Marmolada was pretty staggering, the altitude was high, the ski back to the chairlift long, and (after I mistakenly skied past the chairlift) the challenge of getting back to the hotel before the whole region shut down was intense. And although I failed to make it back all the way and had to settle on a taxi, the photo was arguably worth it. It also achieves a rare (though dubious) personal photographic honor. For the last three ski trips, my favourite mountain photo has been my computer’s desktop theme for more or less a full year until the next ski trip. And this is the one for 2009. Below : the one for 2008: / Below : the one for 2007: / (interestingly, the ones for 2007 and 2008 were both taken on cheap Nikon point-and-shoot digital cameras. 2009 was taken on a Pentax DSLR. Which proves that even cheap point-and-shoots are no slouches in the right conditions)

cycling season is over for me, so there’s more time to head up into the mountains and enjoy the Austrian landscape… so I went for a hike yesterday in the area around Kühtai (Tirol’s highest village at 2.020m) and headed up towards Gaiskogel (2.820m). / it’s not really a hard climb, the first 500m up are fairly easy as the lead along a skiing-slope. only the last part is getting a bit more strenuous, as one has to climb up a steep boulder field. this brings you to the so called Gaiskogelscharte (2.658m) and from there it’s a short way to the Gaiskogel itself. anyway, this pano was taken pretty much halfway between Gaiskogelscharte and Gaiskogel at approx. 2.720m. straight ahead you can see the Rotkogel and the Räuhengrat and looking to the left one can see the Kraspesferner (small glacier) with the Rotgrubenspitze (3.042m). as I was carrying quite some equipment and it was already getting late, I decided to turn around at this point and not continue to the top (appr. another 25min), but instead take a small detour to a reservoir and take some photos there as well….
