  • I re-discovered this one way in the back of my portfolio! I think it deserves another moment in the sun. When it was uploaded to RB, Groups did not yet exist! My first “official” render with Vue 6 Esprit. Your standard alien landscape – easy to do because realism is not an issue :-) This 1680×1050px image took four and a half hours to render – this is due to the “depth of field” effect. Without it, it takes 14 minutes.

  • This photograph was taken in the same small patch of elusive flannel flowers that I came across. I had to go walking through the bush, through 1000 spider webbed bushes to get to these beautiful flowers. Now this is a mean feat for me because I am scared of spiders, but I have searched for these flowers for a long time so couldn’t let that opportunity pass me by. The Sydney Flannel Flower (Actinotus helianthi) is an Australian wildflower usually found in open forest and woodland, usually on sand or sandstone on the coast and mountains of New South Wales and southern Queensland. Flannel flower is a herbaceous or shrubby plant reaching almost a metre in height in good conditions but is often much smaller. The leaves are deeply lobed, grey and velvety in nature, giving rise to the common name. The flowers are small and occur in clusters surrounded by velvety, “petal-like” bracts. The overall appearance of each head of flowers is similar to a daisy. (information courtesy of ASGAP)

  • this dwarfed sized lily only grows about 6-7 inches tall, it is native to the great smoky mountains, i had to lay on the ground shooting this macro in order to show the inside of it, shot this macro using a nikon diopter lens attached to a canon 75-300mm lens

  • laying on the ground shooting macros again, this large-flowered white trillium and large flower bellwort were growing side by side, and nope, the shot isnt upside down, the bellwort grows that way :) / shot this macro using a nikon diopter lens attached to a canon 75-300mm lens / thanks to tom biggs, and his buddy harold ross jr, for turning me on to this new location to shoot. this was in the smoky mountains on the north carolina side This shot won the April Photo contest held by the Knoxville News Sentinal newspaper in Knoxville Tn / Contest titled….Spring Scene Photo Contest 2009 :)

  • This is what the rhododendron looks like in full bloom. native to the great smoky mountains, millions in this area. it starts to bloom in the 2nd week of june, but it’s at it’s peak the later part of june. / before it starts to bloom its full of tight buds, resembling a avacado, then it each one starts to open, and this is the result / best time to shoot this flower is in low lighting. any other time of day you will pretty much end up with blown/washed out flowers about 100% of the time. / my other shot of the buds is here come the rhodies / if you want an idea of what it looks like before it blooms completely

  • This is the Mountain Spiderwort, Tradescantia subaspera Ker-Gawl. var. montana, . It gets its name because the angular leaf arrangement looks kinda like a squatting spider. This shot was taken on the Balsam Mountain and Heintooga Ridge Road in the Great Smoky Mountains The Cherokee and other Native American tribes used Virginia spiderwort for various food and medicinal purposes. The young leaves were eaten as salad greens or were mixed with other greens and then either fried or boiled until tender. The plant was mashed and rubbed onto insect bites to relieve pain and itching. A paste, made from the mashed roots, was used as a poultice to treat cancer. A tea made from the plant was used as a laxative and to treat stomachaches associated with overeating. Virginia spiderwort was one of the seven ingredients in a tea used to treat “female ailments or rupture.” It was also combined with several other ingredients in a medicine for kidney trouble.
