After sheltering under a nearby boulder from a late afternoon tropical downpour my patience was rewarded with a rainbow only befitting the Garden Isle’s most majestic valley. Excerpt from a “letter to the editor” ”.....it brought back fond memories of my (several) hikes to ‘Heaven on Earth’. Last time I took my honey she threw down her pack and proclaimed loudly, ‘This is insane. I’m not going a step further!’ / As I peered over the more than 600-foot vertical drop to the ocean I began to remember, many years ago, my first hike to Kalalau. Well, I had to yell at her, and if I had a bull whip, I may have had to use it (joke). She happily thanked me later for making her finish the hike, and indeed she verily danced with confidence on the return leg. / For the purist, hiking is the only way. Every corner is a new breathtaking vista that serves to only lighten that heavy pack. Paddling – it sounds like fun, but you really haven’t experienced Kalalau unless you hike it and spend a few days there. Like fine wine, there is no hurry to drink. / What’s the big rush ? ‘Getting there is half the fun.’ But Kalalau is ‘being there is all the fun.’ Experience its night sky filled with so many stars you will see your own shadow and swear its moonlight. Moraine Lake is a glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the Village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 6183 feet (1884 m). The lake has a surface area of 0.5 km². The lake, being glacially fed, does not reach its crest until mid to late June. However, when it is full, it is a beautiful shade of blue. THIS IS A BIG IMAGE VIEW LARGER FOR BEST RESULTS This shot was taken from Echo Point in the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area at sunset, it was created from 5 bracketed images using a Nikon D300 fitted with a Nikon 18-200mm. No filters were used. The rock formations to the left are known as “The Three Sisters” the image was taken at sunrise looking past the Sisters certainly have a great view. The Blue Mountains are located 2 hours west of Sydney by road, also by train for visitors to Sydney, there are also organised day trips via motor coach that will take you to the area for the day…. though if you have the time spend a few days in the area. You can see all the attractions, have a devonshire tea in one of the many teahouses, or sit on the edge of the valley that seems to go on forever, and listen to the birdlife. Bushwalking is a must !

Geese returning to Alaska, framed against the Kenai mountain range across Cook Inlet. Signs and sounds of spring near our house, despite ice chunks in the inlet. Nikon D200 and a Nikkor 18-200mm at f/11 and 1/250 sec, -.3ev, using a circular polarizing filter. IS0 200. Converted from RAW to jpeg using Capture NX2. Light curve and slight crop. I feel so energized I could climb one of those mountains now! / Sandhill Cranes leaving for the winter, with the Kenai mountains covered by clouds / Sandhill Cranes catching a thermal over Cook Inlet before migrating south for the winter. /
