Captured along the Mount Evans Wilderness in Colorado, this is one of those waterfalls that kind of sneaks up on ya outta the blue, and if you blink, you actually miss it. I really don’t much in the way of long exposure shots, but after being happy with how this one came out, I am going to start doing them more. Hope ya all like it! I can still remember my very first camera that my parents had given to me when I was about 8 years old. I took that camera everywhere and snapped shots of anything and everything, however it wasn’t until much later in life that I was really bitten by the photography bug. I was planning a big move to the Canadian Rockies and thought now is the perfect time to buy my new camera gear for shooting wildlife. I bought all the equipment I needed that would put me up close with all the wildlife that the mountains had to offer. So off I went chasing Bears, Bighorn sheep, Moose, Elk and Wolves… pretty much any critter I could capture with my lens. It was a fascinating and thrilling experience. Then fate brought to me a girl and she would change my life forever… Newfoundland is where I now call home, with my beautiful wife and baby son. This province is a photographer’s paradise. The scenes change from day to day and the opportunities for capturing them are endless. With my camera in tow I now begin my journey through Newfoundland, photographing and capturing her raw and rugged beauty to share with the world. I hope you enjoy the photographs presented here. Newfoundland is a land visited by frozen giants from the North that create a sense of awe when seen by human eyes as they float down what is known as “Iceberg alley”. It is a land visited by massive whales during the summer that attract multitudes to the shorelines. It is a land rich in history and folklore and it is a land inhabited by a people who will welcome you with open arms. This photo achieved a highly commended status in the 2007 ANZANG: Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year Award. Ironically the key factors in this photograph were all negative ones, bad weather, poor light, a pitiful ski season, and a less than ideal time to go. As a teacher I only have the opportunity to go ski touring in the school holidays which is either side of the best part of the ski season. Usually this means that I have to travel to the Main Range in NSW which is a fair hike from my home in Melbourne to get to any snow. I had spent the previous day skiing out from Thredbo to the ice covered Lake Albina and as this season had not been overly good the cover was quite patchy. The day I took this shot I had planned to ski up Australia’s second and eighth highest summits, Mt Townsend and Alice Rawson Peak but the weather had produced white out conditions on the heights so by default I ended up skiing below the cloud cover in Lady Northcote’s Canyon. Not too far from my camp I saw these icicles high up a cliff on the Gorge wall. Being alone and so far from assistance should anything go wrong I was in two minds as to whether I should attempt to get to them or not. On three occasions in the most difficult spots I reassessed this decision but the closer I got the better they looked so imprudence won out the day and fortunately nothing went wrong. I don’t know whether it was my presence or the icicles time had come, but after getting two frames off the whole structure collapsed, fortunately the shots came out well. The other element of serendipity was the poor light, in better conditions the icicles would have been dazzlingly bright mitigating any chance of capturing detail in their delicate structure. I have been back to this same spot on two occasions since then to try and recapture this scene with a tripod and better gear but the trips occurred in better conditions resulting in the entire slope having a good cover of snow and therefore no icicles. The fleeting nature of these sorts of scenes is one of the things I love about photography; you can literally eternalise unrepeatable scenes, be it icicles, a sunset or patterns in the sand, what a gift. as you can see we had more cloudy days then sunny ….I had to remember I was in the mountains ..up 3000 feet most times ..and clouds were part of the scenery .... it did clear up but I wanted sun tho !!! we had more cloudy days then sunny until we got to Grand Prairie Alberta … / I didnt mind really . .I was just so thrilled to be there ….. There had been fires up there a year before. its why the trees look this way, I found it interesting and started to take the trees against that sky.

Published in DIGITAL PHOTO magazine. There exists a whole row of abandoned buildings along Mormon Row, a phtotgraphic delight, if you don’t mind sharing it with a whole bunch of other photographers ! Deservedly popular , backed up as it is by the amazing Teton mountain range. The town of Jackson is nearby. / The Mormon people were evicted when the National Park was created. I decided to give this the HDR and Orton treatment, to bring out the texture of the wood, and add a little drama to the scene. Shot on my Canon EOS 40D,mounted on tripod, polarising filter, iso 100, f22, 1/30 sec, cloudy WB, RAW file, processed in Photomatix, with further adjustments in PS CS3, and a little Orton applied. Finished with LAB colour to oomph it up a bit ! Surely one of the most treasured spots to sit and watch as a new day breaks. Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada / July, 2009 Lake Louise, set in the Banff National Park in Canada is perhaps known as the Diamond of the Rockies for no other reason than its sheer beauty alone. Having arrived in Canada on the previous afternoon after a long trans-Atlantic flight, the idea to beat the effects of jet lag were adopted with a 3am alarm call and the chance to shoot Lake Louise in all its splendour at dawn. Following a 45 mins drive from Banff accompanied along the way with storms over the mountains lighting the otherwise black night sky, we arrived at Lake Louise in good time for sunrise. Some may know the lake as a bustling tourist spot with coaches coming and going throughout the day. Dropping off their cargo at the water’s edge to take in the majesty of Louise before whisking them off to a further destination all to the sound of clicking shutters and the gentle whir of digital handy-cams. For Claire and I the experience was to sit alone in silence; the only guests at Natures matinee performance… The dedication to early starts could not be better rewarded.

The Moulton Barn, Mormon Row, Teton National Park, Jackson, Wyoming, USA. I got up early for this one, I had travelled thousands of miles to see it, had only one morning to get my shot in the bag – and what did I find ? / A film crew shooting an advert ! Along with a battalion of other photographers, I was champing at the ‘bit’, since we weren’t allowed to shoot in case we captured the models – male and female – the whole darned thing was so artificial !! So, when there was a lull in shooting, I crept under a bush and hastily ‘snapped’ my shot. Maybe I should pursue a career in the ‘Paparazzi ??!!! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D with polarising filter attached, mounted very hastily on my tripod, Canon efs 18-55mm lens set at 45mm, underexposed by half a stop, f 27, 1/20 sec, auto wb, iso 100, RAW file developed as much as possible in Adobe Camera Raw, then in PS CS3, selective Levels/Curves, saturation of colours achieved with LAB colour, then the tiniest amount of Orton applied, to ‘pop’ the textures of the wood and grass. Cradle Mountain taken from Dove Lake, with the boat shed to the right. The tree to the right is an Australian Gum Tree, or eucalypt. Taken at sunset 5:30pm. I know there is millions of photos of this famous mountain range, so I hope you like this one. Cradle mountain is in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Tasmania, Australia.
