People are inherently creative. Deep down, most of us love to come up with new ideas, express who we are, or take a different perspective on the world around us. This is particularly true of children. Remember chalk on the footpath, crayon on the walls, or a painting stuck proudly to the fridge with a magnet. Kids love stories, they love learning about new things, they ask obvious yet somehow overlooked questions. So why don’t many of us focus on our creative interests as adults? Is there something about the process of growing up that changes us, that convinces us to be serious and sensible? Do we lose the ability to be creative? Or does it just get buried amidst the responsibilities, worries and priorities of adult life? Look closer, though, and you’ll see sparks of creativity in adults everywhere. Since starting our RedBubble journey, we’ve been amazed at how many of our close friends have “confessed” to a secret creative hobby, a little spark of creativity that few else know about. Look at the statistics and the picture is clearer still. Over 2.5 million Australians regularly take part in some sort of creative or cultural activity. Almost 90% do this entirely for free, for the simple enjoyment of it. A fortunate few earn a living from it, but most keep their creative spark alive in their own time and without sharing it with the world. RedBubble was founded with a burning desire to improve this situation. And there are some major social and technological trends helping us out. New technology has placed the creative tools of professionals in the hands of amateurs. With digital cameras, editing software, low cost hardware and more, it is easier than ever to produce your own creative content. Truly, the line between professionals and talented amateurs is blurring. And the traditional distinction between producers on one side and consumers on the other fades away – now you can be both! Another important trend is the way that the internet helps side-step the tyranny of distance and lower the cost of distribution. For a country as huge and remote as Australia, this is life-changing. No longer can you be held hostage by limited product ranges, poor information or high costs. If it’s available elsewhere on the globe, you can find it, read about it and buy it in no time at all. Witness also the growth of MySpace and YouTube, riding an internet-powered wave of self-expression and connectedness. Not to mention the millions of blogs out there. For some it’s about fame and the chance of being discovered. But for many, it’s simply about expressing themselves or hanging out with others who share their interests. Yet, plenty of people have held back from self-expression online. Creative talent does not necessarily go hand in hand with technical savvy. And many people don’t feel comfortable sharing their deeply personal creative work in existing online environments. So we asked ourselves: why isn’t there an online home for creative people? A place where they can belong to a genuine creative community, express their thoughts, get inspired, and collaborate with others? And why shouldn’t they be able to turn their creative passion into real objects for themselves or others, without worrying about hassles like producing, marketing, selling, and shipping? And so the concept for RedBubble was born. And the more we thought about it, the more excited we became about making it a reality. We wrote a business plan, left our jobs, scraped together funding, and built a talented team. Eight months later, here we are with the first version of RedBubble alive and kicking. Where RedBubble goes from here is up to you…

  • These Cards Have Been Given a New Home
    by Stephen Mitchell

As previously mentioned, I purchased fifteen of my own photographs as cards. I’d ONLY planned to give a few away as gifts to close friends, and in particular to the one person who convinced me that my photography was worth selling. She knows who she is. So this morning I brought fifteen cards into work purely to allow these friends to choose the picture they liked most … and allow them to have it for FREE. These are the photographs they choose. / / ... for Yve / ... for Rosie / ... for Jenny / ... for Liam / / Little did I realise what would happen next… / / First, Jenny liked them so much she insisted (read: I caved) on having four more. Who am I to argue with a woman? So I decided on a price, she agreed … and I earned another ten dollars. Yes, I reduced the cost to $2.50. But that’s what you do for friends, and free publicity. / / , , So I stopped for a minute to consider my options. Why not sell them? OK, so I had instructions from “SWMBO” to keep some for Xmas and Birthday cards later this year. I was implicitly told that two would go family interstate within the next week! / / So after a quick email, these two photographs were purchased by Yve: / / , Then Wendy said she might miss out – so she bought three (and asked for three that had already been purchased)! / / , , Whew! I feel exhausted and exhilarated all at once! And I need to remember to exhale. Because selling one’s artwork is like giving one’s children away. The photography and post-production is nothing compared with suddenly becoming a ‘recognised photographer’. One person did say I could make more money if I did all this myself. Possibly. But all I want to do is photograph. RedBubble remove the hassle by doing all the framing, laminated, sending, and finances for me! / / One more thing: Wendy also gave me the boost and the BEST Quote of the day : ” I’d rather spend my money on your work, not on Hallmark! “ / Wow, I’ve been compared with Hallmark – and won! She also indicated she will purchase more of my cards online. Only one of the didn’t sell. I get to keep this one for my desk: ‘A picture tells a thousand words’. I love this quote. No longer do I need to write to family and friends – I only have to take one photograph to write a thousand words!

Came across this somewhere. How motivating! Just what I needed on a day like today :) “A man found a cocoon of a butterfly, that he brought home. One day a small opening appeared he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours. It struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, but, it had a swollen body and small, shrivelled wings. He continued to watch the butterfly, he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and the body would contract. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shrivelled wings. It was never able to fly. The man acted with well-intentioned kindness but he didn’t understand the consequences. The restricting cocoon and the struggle required to get through the tiny opening, were nature’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon. Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were to go through life without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as we could have been and we could never fly So the next time you are faced with an obstacle, / a challenge, or a problem, remember the butterfly. / Struggle a little – then fly! “

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it. ~ Confucius For the girl that has ever looked in the mirror and wished for longer hair, bigger lips, smaller ears, a thinner figure, whiter teeth, wider eyes, better make up, a prettier smile……..this is for you!! Have you ever noticed when you walk down Shop Street, or Grafton Street or any high street for that matter!? that girls all tend to dress the same? Yes there are differences of course in styles, colours, shapes etc, but everyone is trying to be someone else, trying to look like someone else, trying to fit into a mould. And do you know what the ironic thing is? You are best at being you, not being your sister, your best friend, the girl from the Rimmel advert or new TV soap. You were made YOU and guess what? You are amazing, you are unique, you are priceless, you are treasured, you were designed, not just thrown together, you are a masterpiece. You were not an accident. You are here at this time for a reason. You are best at being you. Do not try and be anyone else, do not try and fit into a mould that was never made for you. And sure nobody is perfect, we all have made wrong decisions and mistakes, but do not focus on them. Focus on the fact that YOU are amazing, not the person beside you, you’re husband, cat, dog or best friend. YOU are amazing. Learn to like yourself and life will be so much better. Embrace what you have. You may want a smaller figure, different family, prettier smile, and while you can change some things, others you just have to learn to accept and embrace. Be You, because you are Beautiful.

how I became involved >joined this gallery 26 collective after joining redbubble >being online for a few months, then going to an exhibition at the tap gallery met steve, (plus others), who had just curated ‘about a woman’ there who then came to my exhibition opening @north syd community centre on nov 10 then steve negotiated the gallery 26 space. he invited us on board. Steve / Being the generous spirit he is / he invited us all to join him. steve could have used the space for himself, so we’re all very grateful and it inpsired many hands of help. >steve’s motivation: / to free himself and others of the limited gallery opportunities and / the resulting politics of that influences the winners of major art prizes in sydney. It is also to bring art to the public and to reduce the exorbitant fees charged, (because rent of the space and commission is low) enabling the public to purchase art of reasonable prices. Of course, opening at this time of year means those able can acquire unique art from established and emerging artists. it has inspired the help of many, which has resulted in a youtube video a website and it’s own redbubble location Who else do you know can get keys to a place and have it it running (with insurance, 15-20+ different artists, inc 2 international, logo, website, signs, eftpos, hanging systems, staff, ready to open) in 12 days? >my motivation (sunset) is to allow the art I create to see the light of day and share it with those who will treasure it. > it’s created with the idea that it will bring peace, inspiration and a new energy to their life. I picture people coming home at the end of the day, to a welcoming lift of art that suits their desires. >to put into practice the ideas I have. >to earn a living doing what I love >to create art that I would and do live with >to reflect the inspiring connection between art, energy, culture and nature, / the energy I feel from life, the colours that revive me and wake me up. my background / > humanitarian, artistic and science My mother supported Amnesty International by running their wollongong group, which meant I was well aware of world wide social issues from a young age. I was encouraged to be creative, through drawing, painting and collage. My father is an avid photographer, and my uncle, who is a professional photographer-they were excellent examples. I got training in technical drawing at 14. One of my first pieces was a scene of Aboriginal deaths in custody. I entered it into a local Law week competition. Strangely, they didn’t seem to think this represented the law well! The artwork itself was disappeared ... as an adult, after extensive art training, I did a lot of fundraising for various causes, first and foremost Amnesty, but also Greenpeace, UNHCR, Save the Children and so on. Simultaneously, I studied a lot of alternative health practices and did a variety of meditation techniques. This led me to believe the axiom ‘if you want peace in the world, you need to be peaceful’...and do what you love. It made sense to know, if i wanted other people to have peaceful happy lives, and if I have peace-what do I do with it? Well, I’d be creative and I’d also share what I know-hence teaching/working with kids in various capacities. So I am! Last year, it was performing an environmental themed show for preschool to primary (inc writing, costume design, set design and consulting with council re content) This year is a balance of painting and photography, part time teaching and supporting parents with children. It’s a balanced lifestyle and gives me everything I need!

I started painting 6 years ago. I’d had this romantic notion of being a painter but now the time had come, I didn’t actually have a clue what I was going to paint! I was given a book, one of those huge hard backed ones full of beautiful glossy photographs of African women. They were decorated with fabulous jewellery. I decided to try and paint one of these women. I was really fascinated by the tiniest beads and the repetition of the strands. It seemed that by repeating the same object several times, they somehow took on a different meaning. I had a big problem painting from photographs. Not only were these copyrighted but it felt like I was cheating. My parents had discouraged me from becoming an artist because I’d spent most of my childhood copying pictures. They felt that this was not showing true talent or skill. I don’t really agree with this, it’s a different art form, but for me, I wanted to be original. I also wanted to have a message, not just paint for the sake of painting. I was lucky enough to meet an artist who had taught art most of his life. I didn’t like his paintings but he had showed me one or two of his more sculptural pieces which were very quirky indeed. I realised that it was this quirkiness that I liked. He offered to critique the work I had done so far and see if he could get me thinking about which direction I should take. He loved the zebras I had done and said it was a very well executed painting. That gave me hope. He looked at all my paintings and held his hands over different areas in like a circle fashion, like a tunnel and looked through. It made me think of a lens, zooming in. He said that there were areas in all my paintings where the detail was excellent and that I had obviously zoomed into those areas that interested me the most. The last thing he told me was that I should ask myself what it was that really interested me and it would be this that I painted well. After that meeting, I just couldn’t paint. I couldn’t think of anything that I really, really wanted to paint. There seemed to be so many things. I spent months just sitting in my studio, not painting, but thinking. I also spent a lot of time making decorative objects for the home, mostly with beans, whatever type of bean I could find. I would spend hours just gluing them in a repetitive pattern. People couldn’t work out what these objects were made of and that fascinated me. Again, the repetition of one object took on a different meaning when grouped together. I also wanted to paint though and it just wasn’t happening the way I wanted. I went to Vienna for a small break and I spent my time going round some exhibitions trying to get inspiration. I came across an artist called Eva Hesse. She was an American artist who had died at the age of 34 from a brain tumour. She never really got to the place she wanted to be with her art. It made me want to try harder. Her early works were mostly drawings, all quite naive which I didn’t like very much. I was rather bored of this exhibition but then, right at the very end were some of her works where she had used materials and these works were like 3 dimensional, though still hanging like a painting. In several of them she had used string. I was completely fascinated. It was as if a light bulb had been switched on. I realised that I could put all my creative skills into my paintings!!! I couldn’t wait to get into my studio after that. Because I’d been working with beans so much, I took some digital photos of these so that I could blow them up on the computer and really see the detail. The skin on the black eyed beans was crinkled and ideal to be represented in string. This is how I came about doing ‘string beans’, a key piece of work. The repetition of the rows of string creates a rhythm and then when the string is over-painted, it undertakes an metamorphic transformation. It’s totally fascinating. I realised also that most people would not look at nature this closely. They would not study a tomato before they put it in their salad the way I do or photograph a lemon and blow it up out of all proportion on their computer. Here was my message! I could show people how beautiful these things are if only we took the time to look properly. Here was a way for me to show people. Since looking at nature in this way, I look at everything differently. I see flowers as folded pieces of fabric and tiny knots of string for the stamens, I see ridges in shells as bits of string, mushrooms as fibreglass, lichen as bits of clay etc. etc. I don’t see things in a ‘normal’ way anymore which has lead people to think I’m slightly mad. It’s become like an obsession, a compulsion. Now I’ve started this process, I really don’t think I can stop. I have so many ideas and nowhere near enough time to do all I have to do! Must go!!!

It was such exciting news when I got the phone call from a local chain of stores in St. John’s that they wanted to order 100 prints from me last month. Well, that order has been in stores now for about 1 month and they have sold out. The shop called me again yesterday and placed another order for prints… WOOHOO!!!!!! This is such fantastic news. I also got my book yesterday from Blurb (my book) and it looks awesome… I took it to a local radio station and they ordered 7 copies for gifts for their clients. I am now going to take it to the local shops in town and see about selling it. It’s been such a super fantastic week for me and to top it all off I got an email today from Redbubble saying that the image I entered into the “GAIA” compettion was selected as a winner too!!!! Thankyou Redbubble for that one. / / It has taken a while and lots of work to get my work out there, but it finally seems to be taking off. It is well worth the effort you put into it. I read that to market your work successfully takes lots of work, work, and more work and patience… and I have to agree. This site has helped me so much in my work and the people here are so very supportive and I thankyou all soooooooooo much. / / Cheers, / Kevin /

How to Make a Beautiful Life Love yourself. Make peace with who you are And where you are At this moment in time. Listen to your heart. If you can’t hear what it’s saying In this noisy world, Make time for yourself. Enjoy your own company. Let you mind wander among the stars. Try. Take chances. Make mistakes. Life can be messy And confusing at times, But it’s also full of surprises. The next rock in your path Might be a stepping stone. Be happy. When you don’t have what you want, Want what you have. Make do That’s a well-kept secret of contentment. There aren’t any shortcuts to tomorrow. You have to make your own way. To know where you are going Is only part of it. You need to know where you’ve been, too. And if you ever get lost, don’t worry. The people who love you will find you. Count on it. Life isn’t days and years. It’s what you do with time And with all the goodness and grace That’s inside you. Make a Beautiful life… The kind of life you deserve. -unknown

Remember when you were a kid? / Remember the excitement and anticipation of becoming an adult. “when i’m a grown-up, I’m gonna…..”. So what was it you were going to do? Whatever it was, it was pretty exciting, and you couldn’t WAIT to get started, holding onto the magic of the idea and all it’s merit. So, now you’re all grown up, did you do it? Why is it that adulthood often quashes the dreams and aspirations of childhood? Why can’t we indulge in a passionate reality, where we believe in possibilities and aspire to greatness? Surely we don’t have to take ourselves so seriously all of the time. There is still so much to explore, create and discover. After all, aren’t adults just older children? Hold onto those dreams. Allow yourself to breathe life into them. When you were a child, the only thing holding you back was not being old enough to do what you wanted. Now the only thing holding you back is you.

you can also read this here Creative minds get inspired essentially because of what happens in their lives. It comes from an experience, a happening, a realisation, an experiement. It’s a simple equation. A+B=C. We all create our lifes based on our experience, regardless of whether we persue a creative outlet or not. We base daily decisions on our lives by such things as how much money we have in our pocket (shall i take the train or drive today?), how we feel about people (yikes! i don’t want to bump into him!), and our attitudes (I love doing this!). And these perspectives were themselves born out of experiences and earlier perspectives, which in turn came from earlier ones, etc. Some people make a living out of helping people trace back those steps to identify significant events in their lives…but what about those stepping stones ahead? If you look to the past, it becomes clear that your own choices lead you down your path, and so it makes sense that the choices you make now and tomorrow will create a new path into the future. So, let’s experiment. How about changing one specific choice for one week, and see what happens to you, how you feel, and what your experiences are. It might be a complete change in dress style, listening to completely different music than your normally would, or hanging out with people you wouldn’t normally speak to. The key to the exercise is that it needs to be a significant change, and one that will most likely redirect you for that week. You might be surprised at what happens. Ok, what’s the point? Well, our lives are a bit like a sculpture, each experience chipping away at our present self, and shaping our future self. Many people underestimate how much control they have in this somewhat artistic process. Some artists like to do these kind of experiements often, to keep their experiences and perspective fresh. I often read stories of how creative people came to do their projects, and it makes for facsinating reading. Maybe after your week, you might have something facsinating to tell aswell.
