Saying Goodbye to my Grand Mother
by Paul Louis VillaniCeleste Tardio / b: 27 – 09 – 1916 / d: 24 – 03 – 2008 / / / / M…
Celeste Tardio / b: 27 – 09 – 1916 / d: 24 – 03 – 2008 / / / / Mother of 5, Grand Mother of 10 & Great Grand Mother of 3. / / On Monday my Grand Mother passed away. / I’d like to take this opportunity to not express grief or seek your condolences… / Rather, I really want to celebrate her life with sharing some memories of this beautiful woman. / / Nonnina (Italian for Grand Ma) was born in San Marco, Foggia in Italy. / Her family were dress makers in their village. / She was courted by (Luigi Tardio – A Farmer) my Nonno and finally had no choice but to Marry him when he serenaded her from the street in full public view! hehehe! / Two weeks after marriage he left for World War 2, leaving behind a pregnant wife in the care of his Mother and a farm to tend. / During the war years, there were a few visits and a few births along the way. / In 1955 the family migrated to Australia and lived in Fitzroy for a few years until settling in Northcote in the early 60’s. Three months after I was born, my Mum and Dad both had to work to get ahead so I was in the care of Nonnina 10 hours a day. / This went on until I went to kinder Garden and then school. / It was during these years that I bonded with my Nonnina and we will always be close. / / / / To keep me entertained when I was young, she used to place all the chairs in the house in a row down the passage so we could pretend we were on a bus, of which I of course was the driver! / Whilst on this imaginary bus she would sing old Italian village songs and do her sewing, whilst my Nonno begrudgingly sat at the back of this bus smoking his cigarettes and reading the form guide for Saturdays Race meet! hehehe! / She used to cook very simple foods that tasted amazing and I’ll miss that. / Nonnina used to let me get away with practically everything, and even pretended to enjoy me entertaining her and all her visitors with KISS songs when I was eight and learning how to play guitar! / I can only imagine how “I wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll all night and party everyday” sounded like to these oldies! :D / She loved to tell stories and could keep everyone hypnotised with her reminiscing of people, family and places. / One of her favourite things was that she loved to draw. / Never with pencils or paints but with textas!! / / / / The past 12 months have been a bit of a struggle with her health deteriorating and the last seven days have been quite a strain. / Four days before she departed from this earth she still had the strength and will to give out her final orders to all of the family members who were present. / She told everyone to leave the room as she spoke to us individually and gave us some beautiful words to remember her by. / When it was my turn, she asked for my fiancée (Anna) to be present as well and this is what she said to her… “Make sure you love and honour your husband, make sure he is well fed and keep the house nice and tidy and make sure you have lots of beautiful babies!!” / To which I said ”..and what about me”? Nonnina said “Make sure you always love and honour your wife”. / I said “That’s it? Thanks Nonnina for giving me the easy job!!” LOL!! Poor Anna, she’s even got the duty to make sure our babies are beautiful!! hehe! / / Ciao Nonnina, ti volio molto bene, I’ll miss your smile and your spirit. / Please say hello to my Father and Grand Father for me.

The time is now, we have to come together as one, we are one, and we need Change and we need it Now! / I am begging for 1 hour and 23 minutes of your time, for your own knowledge, for knowledge is power and we Do have the power to Change the World! / I am calling my fellow brothers and sisters of Humanity, come together, create a world fueled by love of life, fueled by intelligence, help create the world where no one goes hungry, a world where there is a future for humanity, for all life on Earth….. There is a huge problem in our world, but there is an AMAZING Solution-The Addendum This is the movie that can really change the world, if people will only take the time to listen, to learn, and to open up to change for a brighter future for all life! / We need to get out from under the control of these leaders, who are ruining not just the world, but all life…..with the way the system is there is truly only one outcome and that is a total collapse, if we do not change what is going on then we will all fall…. / Please, my friends, humor me this one time, I am asking only two things, watch the movie and spread the message so we can Heal society our race, so we can Heal our planet, so we can Have to Future for our children, our grandchildren and all life that is coming onto this planet…. / Spread the message, bring hope back, bring control back to the people and take it away from all those enslaving humanity to make their wallets fatter…. / Love Always and Forever, / ♥♥Leah Marie♥♥

She was a very old lady and a real blessing as a Mum…although dementia had changed her somewhat. So…If you don’t see any of my work…or hear from me over the next week…you know why. I’d appreciate your prayers over the coming days For now…..it’s goodbye Blessings / Chris

Your Mother...For One More Day

My mother passed away on January 24, 2000. Perhaps I am writing this now because it is January and that ‘shocking’ event is being refreshed in my mind. In 2006, I saw a book at a Starbucks in Napa Valley called FOR ONE MORE DAY by Mitch Albom. I had read his previous book TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and my mom read it and loved it as well. This new book was about a grief-stricken young man who goes into an alcoholic tailspin when his always-attentive mother, dies. So, of course, I had to read it. I certainly did not go into an alcoholic tailspin after my mother passed away but I thought I would get something out of it. I was also intrigued because I really did want my mother “FOR ONE MORE DAY”...and I thought this book might do the trick. Fast forward a month and I was impressed by a few lines from the book. I wasn’t over the TOP thrilled. It was a different story. It was not like my relationship with my mom. I underlined the words that impacted me and planned to go back to re-read them. A year would pass and this book remained at my bedside table until… Enter Christmas Day 2007 when my cousin, Linda Tafoya-Korenke, sent me two books. Can you guess what one of the books was that I received as a gift? Yes, the same book FOR ONE MORE DAY. The fact that the book entered my life once again I re-read the sentences that impacted me from the book when I read it in 2006. Now I’m so thrilled that I re-read the recent excerpts that I underlined as they help me NOW during this January month. They are all so significant. I share these lines with you now: For One More Day / by Mitch Albom These are the words/sentences that impacted me from that book. By Michael J. Armijo Every family is a ghost story. The dead sit at our tables long after they have gone. When you’re rotten about yourself, you become rotten to everyone else, even those you love. I think what you notice most when you haven’t been home in a while is how much the trees have grown around your memories. When death takes your mother it steals that word forever (“MOM”). In time I came to view that event the way you view a faded vacation photo. It’s just someplace you went a long time ago. I don’t know what it is about food your mother makes for you…but it carries a certain taste of memory. Reading is like talking, so picture me talking to you there: I love you every day. Sometimes, kids want you to hurt the way they hurt. “I did what mattered to me.” …believe in…memories, they will pull you back together. / I met a man once who did a lot of mountain climbing. I asked him which was harder, ascending or descending? He said without a doubt descending because ascending you were so focused on reaching the top, you avoided mistakes. / / Did my old man slide back into foggy absentia, the occasional phone call, the Christmas card. “When someone is in your heart, they’re never truly gone. They can come back to you, even at unlikely times.” She was called back to people by their memories of her. “It’s still nice to be thought about, you know.” “It’s such a shame to waste time. We always think we have so much of it.” Do you ever think while something is happening, about what’s happening someplace else? “Your mom. She died.” : They are different than other words. They are too big to fit in your ears. They belong to some strange, heavy, powerful language that pounds away at the side of your head, a wrecking ball coming at you again and again, until finally, the words crack a hole large enough to fit inside your brain. And in so doing, they split you apart. I realized when you look at your mother, you are looking at the purest love you will ever know. “Have a plan. Have a plan.” “Secrets…they’ll tear you apart.” You need to keep people close. You need to give them access to your heart. But there’s a story behind everything. How a picture got on a wall. How a scar got on your face. Sometimes the stories are simple, and sometimes they are hard and heartbreaking. But behind all your stories is always your mother’s story, because hers is where yours begins. Sharing tales of those we’ve lost is how we keep from really losing them. One day spent with someone you love can change everything.

You said you’d never brushed your teeth so much. There was running water. You’d never had running water before. You brushed your teeth until the bristles were worn down. You swept the floors, you scrubbed the boards and patted your stomach and pretended that you didn’t care. You knew that the growing bump was only temporarily residing within you. That’s how it was. Babies could never stay with fifteen year old babies. You were always the baby of your family. How could you be a mother? You scrubbed the floors, you made your bed, you ironed the linen, you cleaned the kitchen, you washed the dishes and rolled your eyes at the sisters. You could never look after anyone else except yourself; that’s what they told you. No matter how much you had grown, no matter how much your belly had swollen, no matter how many times that heart beat within your being, no matter what. You couldn’t be a mother. You delivered that baby, into the world, into the room, into time and space. That place – it never introduced the two of you. She left your centre, but never your soul. One day, you might get to hold her. I hope so. (a tribute to the unwed mothers of the 1960’s) xx

If she could be what she wanted / She would be a star someday. / She would light the lights in the City / Till the sky turned grey. If she could be what she wanted / She would travel round the World / Sail the seas in Sailing Ships / Chasing dreams in golden sails. If she could dream what she wanted / Her days would drift away / But she would return as a Mother / and Love each day away.

magic & pickles

When the holidays swing back into focus, they somehow miraculously manage to revive thoughts of peace, healing and miracles, and to unleash a host of comfy, demented annual rituals. Somewhere amid all that, I usually manage my own miracle, by carving out one splendid evening when the clamor has abated, the tootsies are warmed by dying embers in the fireplace and the insides warmed by a bottomless cup of nog – okay, glass of wine. That’s when old memories drop by without knocking, pull up a chair and get reacquainted. First among equals is a little miracle I witnessed as a kid, an annual rite of my childhood that featured a little lady, a little magic and a lot of pickles. Once upon a time, my mother’s kosher dills were, in short, renowned and coveted throughout the land. As an uncle used to say, these were not pickles, they were “something something.” They also were a nexus of mystery, an enigma wrapped in a pickle jar. They had a Secret Ingredient known only to my mother. And she wasn’t talking. They were deep, dark green and if you snapped one in half, it would crack like a bullwhip. My mother would “put up a lug” aka jam two or three boxes of cukes, plus pepper, plus spices, plus water, plus…...her Secret Ingredient into jars and seal them up. And everyone would wait. The longest three weeks on record. Not just the family – neighbors we never talked to the rest of the year, checking in,sucking up, “Hi, how ya doing….been so long. You don’t age!” Far flung relatives would make travel plans around pickle season – I swear – they’d make a pass through town for a jar – that is, to see my family… I learned years later that, long after I’d grown up, moved out, fled to LA, childhood friends of mine continued the annual pilgrimage to Mrs. Althouse’s dill pickle shrine. “Hi, how you doing? You’re looking sharp, Mrs. Althouse. Wow, those fingernail sure are red…..” Mind you, these were people who had stopped having any use for me years before. I couldn’t have picked them out of a lineup. My old man used to drink the brine. Wonder if that had something to do with the two heart attacks? When I was a kid I loved to get lost staring into the jars, watching them bubble. Not fizz, that meant a bad jar, a stinker. The occasional blump, blump, like an untended fishtank, meant something mysterious was going on in there, and it was good…. Come the big day, a small, anxious mob of insiders would gather in our kitchen, my mother would shake a few jars, hold them up to a window and give them the hairy eyeball test, for color and milkiness of the brine, I think. The old man always unscrewed the first jar. It took muscles, and a little body english, but after a few caustic grunts and sometimes well-placed whacks around the lid with the handle of a butter knife, we’d hear the familiar, ffff-wupp! Psssssssss, as the seal gave way, everyone exhaled and our entire kitchen filled with the singular bouquet of virgin kosher dills. My father dislodged the first pickle and took a bite, the vultures descended and two or three jars were empty in the blink of an eye. Needless to say, the great unwashed were already queuing up out front with freshly scrubbed faces and their hair in a curl, hoping for “just one jar.” “Hi, how ya doing, Mrs. A, I baked these and, naturally, thought of you, you look fabulous…..” I don’t think I ever saw my mother eat a pickle. She shared the Secret Ingredient only with my sister and my wife, and not until many years had passed since she’d put up her last lug and retired from the game. She seemed to enjoy the limelight and the compliments, but mostly she enjoyed keeping the Secret from my aunt, who also put up pickles. My aunt’s a perfectly nice lady, but there was an ongoing competition between those two. In the cutthroat pickling venue, at least, she wasn’t a sister-in-law, she was The Competition. My mother was Coke, My aunt, Pepsi. And to be perfectly honest, my aunt’s were lesser pickles. That’s about it – oh, the Secret Ingredient. Cocaine. Just kidding. Anything I wrote would be an anticlimax and it is, so here goes – sea salt. Sea salt? Sea salt…..at least that’s what my mother said. I think it was magic.

Meet Little Lost Orca and Migaloo
by Karin TaylorMIGALOOMAGIC is my new concept gallery at Red Bubble…below are the very first offerings!...
MIGALOOMAGIC is my new concept gallery at Red Bubble…below are the very first offerings! My Definition of Magic / Adjective – Wonderful, amazing or incredible, ie as in ‘a magic moment’ I think it’s very important to define magic, as for some people this is a stumbling block and something that conjures up images of black magic, darkness, and other practices which i don’t subscribe to… for the record I’m a christian who doesn’t head to sunday services each week, although i have spent most of my life doing that, it’s not where I am at this stage of the journey….and I’m not a perfect one by any means, I’m quite an unusual one by christian standards, and many feel i don’t meet the standards, but that’s ok…God and I are like this :D we’re tight, so it doesn’t matter what others think on that score…and I guess it’s unusual for me to use the word ‘magic’ when ‘magic practices’ are forbidden in the bible… but it is the where I am coming from that matters to God…He knows I don’t mean it in that way…so already, i apologise to any who may find it offensive or inconsistent, but I intend to keep the name as to me it only implies magic in this case as “wonderful, amazing or incredible, as in a magic moment”. / migaloo-pink-magic / / migaloo-blue-magic / migaloo-in-antarctica / little-lost-orca / rainbow-orcas / little-lost-orca tshirt / Moo Cow Sunrise / Little Moo I’ve been busy with a new concept…. / I wanted to bring parents something special to help them connect with their children… / I am busy creating a series of digital wall art, especially for children…for their bedrooms. My new gallery on Red Bubble is called migaloomagic / So far, I have created six conceptual pieces of art over there….but I am excited to show you anyway!! For anyone who is interested I thought I might create a series showing how I developed my image Mother. / The First Stage of etching was to cover my plate with Hardground, from here I draw the lines into the hardground leaving the plate underneath exposed. / Place the plate in the acid, taking care to remove any bubbles with a feather. The length of time you leave it in the acid depends on the strength of the acid, room temperature and the depth of line you wish to create. / Here is the result or 1st State of my design. / / For the second stage of this plate I choose to use a softground. Soft ground enables you to produce textures, and the lines drawn into the plate are softer in appearance. I place different textures onto my plate ( alfoil, onion bag, netting etc) and ran it through the press, leaving an imprint in the soft ground. Once again place it in the acid, however if you want some areas to remain white (unbitten) cover them up with a liquid bitamen, as I have done in areas of my plate. / Here is the result or the 2nd State of my design. / / The next stage is aquatint. A fine layer of airbourne resin settles onto the plate which is carefully melted onto the plate. It is now a process of covering up your plate with liquid bitamen in stages. The first bite (plate placed in acid) will leave the area covered with bitamen as a highlight, the next bite will be slightly darker, etc creating tone on your plate. / Here is the result or 3rd State. / / Here you see I’ve used two different colours when I inked up my plate, you can also apply a roll up of relief ink (as used in linocut and woodcut printing techniques), the result is shown below. / / Another technique can also be used called deep bite. This is achieved by once again painting out choosen areas with bitamen and placing the plate back in the acid for a much greater time. This give a random result creating a some what abstract result. / This is the result or 4th State. / / What more could you do to the plate you ask…... well chop it up of course! / Unfortunately I don’t have any of those prints left, and they were my favourites and added to the theme of seperation of the image that I was trying to convey, but hey at least they are hanging on someones wall!
