View of Mosques at sunset from Al Azhar Park in Cairo. I waited until the right moment when the sun was directly behind the minaret before capturing this shot.
View of mosques and minarets as the sun sets over Cairo.
The dome on europe’s most southerly mosque,Gibraltar.
The low sun and people in the background show off the beautiful and intricate design typified by the Moghal dynasty which built many of India’s world famous structures.
Istanbul, historically Byzantium and later Constantinople, is a city which spans two continents. Half is in Europe and the other half is in Asia, only separated by the mighty Bosphorus Straight . With places as breathtakingly beautiful as the The Blue Mosque featured here, it is little surprise that this city has seen many battles over many centuries as people have fought to control it.
This mosque was in Barisal (pronounced Barryshall) obviously the pictures are not as good as the originals but these had to go through the scanner. No digital cameras then. Only our good reliable Olympus

Frozen streetlights with the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, in the background in Istanbul, Turkey.
A dome in the Suleymaniye mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. A very beautiful, serene place of worship, not as over-run by tourists as the Blue Mosque, where at prayer times the mullahs have to almost drive the tourists out by force. This mosque is away from the main drag, near the university, exquisitely decorated, very welcoming to (respectful) foreigners.
Blue ceramic tiles adorn this mosque in St Petersburg, Russia. I found the patterns to be so beautiful and hypnotizing. -mike
This is at the entrance to an ancient fire temple on the silk trail in Tabriz Iran, it is now called a blue mosque.

Umayyad mosque – Damascus – Syria No doubt the latest episode of your favorite saga will astonish you introducing a new great character, and always more of drama, suspense, passion, rise and fall of love and hate !!!
The “Blue Mosque” in Istanbul was commissioned by Sultan Ahmet as an Islamic place of worship. He commissioned it in order to rival the Hagia Sophia which stands near it. Construction on the mosque began in 1609 and took seven years to complete. It was designed by the architect Mehmet Aga. Sultan Ahmet died only a year after the completion of his masterpiece, at the age of 27. He is buried just outside the mosque with his wife and three sons. The interior is magnificent and structurally the smaller domes complement the great central dome. The blue tiles from which the mosque gets its name are visible in this photo. The Basilika of Agios Titos (St. Titos) in the old quarter of Heraklion is one of Crete’s most important monuments to Christianity. The church was originally built by the Byzantines in 962 A.D. and was later converted by the Turks to a mosque. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1856, it was rebuilt by the Turks as a mosque and later the Cretans converted it into a Greek Orthodox church in 1923. The church has contained the skull of Saint Titos since its return from Venice in 1966. The Venetians had taken the skull with them when the city fell to Turks in 1669. Failaka island was inhabited and very alive before the iraqi invasion of Koweit. Since then people have been encouraged not to go back and stay on the mainland. Only mosques have been rebuilt, here framed in the devastated power station.
