We have gone from one Mosaic to two. Xavier has been very busy organizing all those tiny images so that all your work looks great and can be traversed and zoomed with ease. We have also sped them up and they are singing for us here at central. So we now have PAX And Warm Iron (worth visiting just to read Onetonshadow intro. For all of you who use Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit etc or write blogs do feel free to get out there and do your stuff to share across the web. Depending on reaction we will build more of them on different themes.

It’s that time of the week again already, and this week there are two important additions to the site today. Gaia, the book, is now on sale. It looks fantastic, get your copy from the RedBubbble Store. For more information, and a list of those published, please see this post. Even bigger news is that today we have launched a new take on RedBubble’s continued exploration of New Art. We see this art as a move away from art bestowed upon us to art that ultimately embraces all of us as co-equals in its creation and interpretation. The publications ‘In the Moment’ and ‘Gaia’ were part of this exploration. The new work ‘PAX’ is an online Mosaic of 16,384 images from RedBubble artists that aims for a collective beauty that is no greater than any single one of its components. It is an art work that is complete on the Web, fully harnessing the power and potential of this medium in its creation and in its display. Enjoy! - Pilgrim

Did you know there are 1.6 million inventions under active patent in the United States? / Did you know RedBubble makes you smarter? This week on the bubble we’ve made a few tweaks to mybubble, adding back in some of the links that went missing when we lost the overview page and generally making it a bit friendlier. If you’re participating in any of the beta challenges you’ll notice some more changes – the biggest of which is that there is now separate entry and voting periods to make things a bit fairer. Justin has been working hard this week figuring out a final end point for challenges so that hopefully we’ll be able to release them site wide soon. And in case you missed it earlier in the week, there’s now a pretty T-Shirt Mosaic that looks like an iron for you to play with. In fact I might go and do just that now. - Xavier

  • Thief of Hearts
    by Diana Maus

    US$3.42–US$91.20

He stole the heart (the strongest one) / The one with wings that would have flown. He stole the heart (before it grew) / No note the harm deceit would do. He stole the heart (and sad to say) / Filleted its soul with fork and knife. He stole the heart (the one with wings) / But stronger souls can trump a King. Actual artwork is 12” x 12”. Mixed media mosaic, framed in 2” deep, distressed brown solid wood shadow box that can be opened. My work is hand-beaded by gluing each bead, jewel and embellishment one by one onto foam-core using tweezers and toothpicks. I love this kind of meditative labor. I use leather, brass and silver charms and hundreds of Czech and Japanese bugle beads.

  • You've Got Heart
    by Diana Maus

    US$3.42–US$91.20

You’ve Got Heart is a 5” x 7” (artwork size) mixed media mosaic framed with a black shadow-box that opens. A heart doctor doesn’t deal only with the physical heart but the emotional heart as well. My doctor inspired this piece with his wonderful, warm care. My work is hand-beaded by gluing each bead, jewel and embellishment one by one onto foam-core using tweezers and toothpicks. I love this kind of meditative labor. I use vintage Swarovski buttons and crystals, a huge deep red and gold dichroic heart, beads, silver charms and lots of Czech bugle beads.

  • 74
    by John Nelson

    US$3.42–US$91.20

The creation of a singularity from several images often produces surprising results. This is simply a collection of different cards which I have lying around my studio using 3 photographs to present one image. It is not world breaking, it is not of such significance to alter the world balance but is it interesting enough to warrant being in a portfolio?

  • The Choice
    by Diana Maus

    US$3.42–US$91.20

It’s not unusual for an artist to be influenced by poetry. Poetry is truth exposed— eloquently and succinctly. Sometimes it seems like my personal truth, but as it turns out, my truth is universal. This piece was inspired by the poet Wislawa Szymborska. / http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/1996/szymborska-poetry.html / In the poem “COULD HAVE”, / http://www.english.upenn.edu/~traister/szymborska.html / Szymborska writes about destiny/fate/chance/luck and, most fortunately, reprieve. I read this poem many times and eventually realized that I didn’t really have The Choice to decide my fate after my mother’s death at a young age. “As a result”, “because”, “although” and “despite” played the larger role. The “Chest” of drawers is a metaphor for my mother’s chest (and heart). Once upon a time, there seemed no separation between hers and mine. The four drawers state my truths: As a result of circumstances at the time / Because I had to go on / Although it wasn’t what I wanted, and / Despite all evidence to the contrary I chose. Or did I?

  • PAX Hack
    by Dave Pearson

    RedBubble’s newly-announced PAX...

RedBubble’s newly-announced PAX is pretty cool. Well, no, that’s not true, it’s very cool. But it’s got a problem. The problem is that, with over 16,000 works in the mosaic, you’ve got a hell of a time seeing if any of your works are in there. Now, sure, you could sit down and just wander around it, keeping an eye out for your own stuff and being amazed at some of the works that are in there, but that could take forever. Besides, you can never be sure that you’ve found all of them (or be sure that you’ve confirmed that you’ve got none in there). And then I noticed that the full list of all the works in the mosaic was available “under the hood” (anyone with a reasonable knowledge of web development should be able to find that file). The file itself is just some Javascript code. So, I got to thinking, here’s a file that contains a list of image IDs of every work in the mosaic. I’ve got a list of all my works on RedBubble thanks to a tool I wrote a while back. If I just extract the two ID lists, take the intersection of those two lists, I’ll have a list of all of my works in PAX. So, a quick bit of ruby hacking later and I had findPAXworks up and running. And a few seconds later I had a full list of all of my works that appear in there. Well, I say “all”, there’s only the two, and it’s the two that I expected: / Chaos / Quite a Contrast Now I can go and enjoy wandering around the mosaic without being preoccupied with looking for my own works. ;)
