I saw 4 blue morphos over two days while riding in the Mayan jungle in Belize. Their gorgeous blue wings caught the sunlight as the flitted very quickly through the trees. This one here was in an enclosure near where we stayed where they bred only indigenous butterflies. It is feeding on banana and sharing his food with many banana owl butterflies. / The Menelaus Blue Morpho (Morpho menelaus) is an iridescent tropical butterfly of Central and South America. It has a wing span of six inches (15 centimeters). The adult drinks juice from rotten fruit with its long proboscis, which is like a sucking tube. The adult males have brighter colours than the females. The larva eats plants at night. The larva is red-brown in colour with bright patches of lime-green or yellow. The larvae are also highly cannibalistic. (Wikipaedia)

I think this is a Blue Morpho Butterfly which belongs to the family of Owls; I photographed it at the Insectarium on Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana, where butterflies flutter happily in a controlled environment, light on people’s shoulders (and on my toes), and bring smiles to every face. The only downside was the high heat and humidity. It kept the butterflies happy, but my eyeglasses and camera lenses kept fogging up! Still, it was worth the joy of the experience.
“All things bright and beautiful / All creature great and small…” / A blue morpho stretching its wings.
Native to Central America, the brilliant metallic blue upper wings have earned this butterfly title “Jewel of the forest”. The camouflage colouration and eye spots of the under wings are easily observed at the conservatory’s fruit feeders. !http://www.redbubble.com/images/clear.gif!
Blue Morpho landed on a bunch of books
The blue color on this species just glows.
These two butterflies were sharing a piece of fruit side by side. I thought the photo would make a nice card for anyone who wants to correspond with a life-time pal. The larger butterfly is a Blue Morpho Owl, but I can’t identify the tiny tattered one.
