I went to the local lagoon (don’t you have one?) this morning looking for inspiration. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. I now have a series that I am dedicating to the wildlife sanctuary known as Dangars Lagoon and to all those who maintain this wonderful oasis.

Just another buffalo picture from scenic Yellowstone National Park. I love this one for the variety of natures delights all in one picture! Snow capped mountains, pristine streams, wildlife (view larger to see many geese and other waterfowl in the background water) rolling hills, wildflowers, green piney trees, and the mighty bison. / I know I might be over doing it with the buffalo images but I keep going back to this one on my computer and thinking of that old song, “Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam, where the deer and the antelope play. Where seldom is heard a discouraging word, and the skies are not cloudy all day.” / /
WILD AND FREE / / Two cheetah cub brothers sitting on a termite mound. Taken early one morning about half an hour after sunrise. (Masai Mara – Kenya) / / The world’s fastest land animal, the cheetah, is a unique and the most specialized member of the cat family and can reach speeds of 70 mph. Unlike other cats, the cheetah has a leaner body, longer legs, and has been referred to as the greyhound of the cats. It is not an aggressive animal, using flight versus fight. With its weak jaws and small teeth, the price it paid for speed, it cannot fight larger predators to protect its kill or young. The cheetah was once a common animal found on five continents, but is slowly losing its race for survival and is now classed as an Endangered Species! Morning in Smoky Mountain National Park. This Bull had just chased a young bull away from his harem. This image is the cover and the December photo in my 2009 wildlife calendar.
Pine trees – many dead or dying – silhouetted by the rising sun filtered through morning fog. Salt water from the Gulf of Mexico has seeped farther inland, killing many of the slash pines in this part of the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, on Florida’s eastern panhandle gulf coast. Photographed with Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 (10MP/12x Leica lens).

The Red Panda, also called the Firefox or Lesser Panda (Latin name: Ailurus fulgens, “shining cat”), is a mostly herbivorous mammal, specialized as a bamboo feeder. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat (40 – 60 cm long, 3 – 6 kg weight). The Red Panda is endemic to the Himalayas in Bhutan, southern China, Pakistan, India, Laos, Nepal, and Burma. There is an estimated population of fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. Their population continues to decline due to habitat fragmentation.

As the sun peeked over the mountain at Lake Estes this morning, two big Bull Elk were sparring on the shore, feeling their oats and having a go at cracking their antlers together, just for fun. They really seemed to be more playing than actually sparring. The sound of those antlers is incredible and the sight of them together like that at first light was a blessed beginning for my day today… Estes Park, Colorado.
yay.. another day i love mornings.. they remind me of cockadoodle doo and breakfast.. and children going to school.. and the deer panting.. and cows mooing.. / took a walk along the lake at the Babcock Wildlife Management area . / Charlotte county, Florida
I was out early searching for elk. When I got to Moraine Park, there was a layer of fog over most of the open area. The sun hadn’t quite reached up and over the ridge, so things were still pretty dark. I tried to maneuver around to catch this big bull with the fog behind him, but just when I almost had the angle and the light, he moved into the trees. The light was still pretty low, but I was able to catch his breath as he bugled. This Bull Elk and his harem were hanging out at Lake Estes a couple of mornings ago….he was bugling like crazy to another Bull across the lake….it is quite an amazing sound when it is echoing off the mountains around the lake in the early morning quiet….I am so blessed to have this beautiful place to walk and experience nature up close and personal. Mr. Elk took a pause for a few minutes to walk down into the water and take a slow drink….it was 33 degrees that morning, so every breath he exhaled rose like mist above the lake…..so magical…. I realize I have been posting a lot of elk photos lately….I see them daily and am still in awe…...and I just love sharing the beauty…..
Here’s how it looks matted & framed: / Digital work inspired by the bobwhites that live in the field behind my home. :) Shown below are a couple of close-up detail shots:
