  • Ho’okipa Beach Sunrise Maui Hawai’i We had a minor earthquake last night. You may read about it in my journal This morning I awoke early. Jacob and I had coffee together outside on our lanai, and as I was gazing out over the rooftops toward Ho’okipa I saw a squall rolling in over the ocean. I told him I would be back soon, kissed him and told him I love him, grabbed my camera and equipment and drove down to Ho’okipa. I was the first one on the delta below. I stayed for about three hours as the sun rose in the sky and the colours and light appeared, listening to the rocking ocean as the / waves were rolling in like thunder. It was so beautiful. This shot was taken at around 10:30 overlooking the beach gazing toward Mauna Kahalawai, I’ao Valley and the West Maui mountains as I was preparing to return home upcountry. The weather today on Maui is absolutely gorgeous. Aloha kakahiaka, good morning Maui. The destructive Tsunami of 01 April 1946 completely altered the natural features of Ho’okipa. The beautiful beach lost much of it’s wide golden sand beach and most of the Hau trees were lost. The high lava rock seawall on the seaward edge was constructed to try and protect any further damage. Ho’okipa is also world renowned for surfing, wind surfing, kite boarding and international windsurfing competitions. There are strong currents here and most of the time it is not suitable for swimming unless you a very experienced. Longshore currents are often very strong and tend to run toward the high point at the west end of the beach, which appears to be near the horizon in this image. • A trip to visit some relatives in Scotland brought me back to my childhood playground and were my father used to play when he was a child. One of the best sandy beaches on the East Coast of Scotland, Fraserburgh is also a well known fishing port. Also they have the best Italian ice cream and is a must whenever I go back, whatever the weather. Quite early, and the tide was coming in, I only dropped the camera in the surf twice, but was glad the shot still was in the camera when I got home. Canon 5D, 24-70mm at 28mm, f/4, 1/640 sec, ISO 800. No filters used. Dust and scratches removed in photoshop, chromatic abs removed by color blend. • Bay Head Beach, New Jersey still feeling the force of the NorEaster, November 14, 2009. / Nikon D80 W/24-120mm VR At one of my favorite jetties, that I love hanging out at, and have quite a few images of it in my gallery. I was able to have beach access here, unlike at Mantoloking Beach. What a different perspective getting at eye level with the waves. I had to keep checking to make sure I was far enough away. Didnt want to get my camera wet! :)
