Old Tombstone with the Memento Mori type inscriptions
Ars longa, vita brevis… / Tombstone, Cologne Cathedral, Germany
A somewhat older work. I still like it quite a bit. The female character in this has returned on more recent works and often in sketches.
Life is short, and shortly it will end; / Death comes quickly and respects no one, / It destroys everything and takes pity on no one. / To death we are hastening, let us refrain from sinning. If you don’t turn back and become like a child, / And change your life for the better, / You will not be able to enter, blessed, the Kingdom of God. / To death we are hastening, let us refrain from sinning. Remember that you are a Mortal

This cemetery is at the Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, SC. It is the oldest in the city with dates back to 1690.One of the unique things found here is an abundance of the Memento Mori symbols carved on the stones
I shot this back in February on a lovely clear day, from the 54th floor viewing platform of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills. The image was recently used by a property development chain in Salt Lake, Utah, USA, and has been printed 30ft long as the back-wall mural in a new Japanese restaurant. Gentle typographical WTF design WTF, an internet slang acronym for “What the fuck?” / Internet slang (Internet language, netspeak, or chatspeak) is slang that Internet users have popularized and, in many cases, coined. Such terms often originate with the purpose of saving keystrokes, and many people use the same abbreviations in text messages and instant messaging. Acronyms, keyboard symbols, and shortened words are often methods of abbreviation in Internet slang. A morris dance is a form of English folk dance usually accompanied by music. It is based on rhythmic stepping and the execution of choreographed figures by a group of dancers. Implements such as sticks, swords, and handkerchiefs may also be wielded by the dancers. In a small number of dances for one or two men, steps are performed near and across a pair of clay tobacco pipes laid across each other on the floor. There are claims that English records of the morris dance dating back to 1448 exist, but these are open to dispute. There is no mention of “morris” dancing earlier than the late 15th century, although early records such as Bishops’ “Visitation Articles” mention sword dancing, guising and other dancing activities as well as mumming plays. Furthermore, the earliest records invariably mention “Morys” in a court setting, and both men and women are mentioned as dancing, and a little later in the Lord Mayors’ Processions in London. It is only later that it begins to be mentioned as something performed in the parishes. There is certainly no evidence that it is a pre-Christian ritual, as is often claimed. In the modern day, it is commonly thought of as a uniquely English activity, although there are around 150 morris sides (or teams) in the United States. British expatriates form a larger part of the morris tradition in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Hong Kong, and there are isolated groups in other countries, for example those in Utrecht, Netherlands, and Alsace, France ACRYLIC ART CALENDARS CARDS POETRY PHOTOGRAPHY – ANIMALS PHOTOGRAPHY -CANDID SHOTS PHOTOGRAPHY – CATS AND DOGS PHOTOGRAPHY – CONTEMPORARY WORK PHOTOGRAPHY – FLOWERS PHOTOGRAPHY – INSECTS PHOTOGRAPHY – TRADITIONALLY TURKISH PHOTOGRAPHY – TREE AND TREE PARTS T-SHİRTS My Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain. Taken from the Public Domain here and digitally enhanced. Lucien Walery (1863-1935) stands out in the night lights of Paris because he photographed an extraordinary number of beautiful women from most of the particular risque dance revues from the early 1900’s through the 1920’s. / It appears that there were 2 or even 3 photographers who used the label “Walery” to identify their photographs. The elder was Count Stanislaw Julian Ostrorog (1830-1890), born in Mohylewo, Lithuania. He became a British citizen in 1862, and set up a studio in London, in 1883. Stanislaw Ostrorog used the pseudonym of Walery which he adapted from his wife’s name, Waleria. After his death in 1890, his son Stanislaw Julian Ignacy, Count Ostrorog (1863-1935) continued the studio of his father, combining (between 1890-1900) with Alfred Ellis to become Ellis and Walery. Walery is known for his famous portraits of Queen Victoria. / The younger Count Ostrorog is often confused with Lucien Waléry, who lived and worked in Paris in the period 1900-1930, and is known for his photographs of dance revue ladies. a.o. Mata Hari and Josephine Baker. Lucien signed his photographs “Waléry – Paris”, “Yrélaw”, or “Laryew”. Some believe that Lucien is the same as the younger Count Ostrorog, who is supposed to have moved to Paris, around 1900. More likely Lucien is altogether a different person.
