  • This is a painting of old working boats moored on the Georges River in Sydney, Australia. / It is painted in watercolour on paper. I love old working boats. These are full of character and age. They belonged to the fishing boats that plied Botany Bay before fishing was banned there due to depleted stocks. I used to go down to the moorings both first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening when you get completely different light on the boats. And in the evening you were rewarded by the sound of the fishermen calling to each other as they prepared for the night’s fishing. Now they are gone and I do miss them. Fortunately I have many photos to remind me of those days. See more of Freda’s works: / Boats / City / Fractals / Stillife / Figures Freda’s website

  • / Calypso’s Quest by Karin Taylor / from the Beach Stuff Series / this is mixed media collaged piece / i have used acrylics and guache, watercolours, cut out paper / to form the sails and the hull This song is about the ship Calypso, which was bought by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and converted to an oceanographic ship. Cousteau wanted to understand “The silent world” better, in order to protect it. “To live on the land we must learn from the sea” – Cousteau was the first to do research on pollution and its effects on the sea and received many honors for his accomplishments. John Denver cared deeply about nature and this song was a tribute to both Calypso and her captain and their valuable work. (thanks, Marthe – Amsterdam, Netherlands) Calypso” Lyrics / To sail on a dream, on a crystal clear ocean, / To ride on the crest of a wild raging storm; / To work in the service of life and the living / In search of the answers to questions unknown; / To be part of the movement and part of the growing, / Part of beginning to understand . . . Aye, Calypso, the places you’ve been to, / The things that you’ve shown us, / The stories you tell; / Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit, / The men who have served you / So long and so well. Like the dolphin who guides you, / You bring us beside you / To light up the darkness and show us the way; / For, though we are strangers in your silent world, / To live on the land we must learn from the sea; / To be true as the tide and free as the wind-swell, / Joyful and loving in letting it be . . . / John Denver / Album: Windsong

  • This is a large version of Shallow mooring at Sorrento link / I felt like doing a larger one and it is mostly acrylic, painted on watercolour paper. Image size: 54×73 cms. I want to enter it into a local Art on Paper competition. This is held at Hazelhurst, our local Regional Art Gallery. Entry has to be in by May 18th and they tell you if you are hung by June 6th. To even get hung,as a traditional artist, in this show is an almighty achievement, most of the work hung is very contemporary. / I did get hung once, at the very first show. / They hung my work on a pillar, in the restaurant, away from the main exhibits! But I’ll give it a go, just for the fun of it! Thank you all so very much for all the kind comments, faves and watches. I really appreciate these. • I found this unique House Boat moored at Marmong Point Marina, on the shores of Lake Macquarie. The original digital photo was captured using a 6 MP Sony Cyber-Shot and processed using Paint Shop Pro. I duplicated the original Layer and applied a Sepia Filter to that copy. Then I created a new Tinting layer, and duplicated the Original Layer again to bring back some of the original colours.

  • This began as a watercolor on Yupo paper. I was amazed at how this underwater sea world appeared as I played with it on Picnik. I love the plant life that appears to be growing at the bottom and the tiny colored sea creatures that emerged. I especially love the abstract nature of this exploratory piece. I have become an underwater explorer and I never even got wet!!

  • A “pour” of liquid watercolor on watercolor paper (Robert Doak paint) This painting makes me think of one of my favorite books, “Hinds’ Feet on High Places” by Hannah Hurnard. The book is a spiritual allegory, wherein the main character, Much-Afraid, embarks on a journey from the valley of humiilation to the high places of the kingdom. She must leave her village of Much-Trembling and her Fearing relatives and climb a rocky mountainside where she develops “hinds’ feet” along the way so she can move freely about the high places. She is invited on this adventure by the Chief Shepherd, and He comes to her aid whenever she calls. She is also accompanied by the companions he chose for her, Sorrow and Suffering. While on this journey they come across a huge waterfall and the Chief Shepherd asks her to stop and look up to the top of the waterfall. The mist caresses her face gently as she watches the “never ending rush of waters cast themselves down from the high places.” It was “terrifyingly lovely” as the waters dash themselves in pieces on the rocks below. The Chief Shepherd asks Much-Afraid what she thinks of this “fall of great waters in their abandonment of self-giving,” and she responded, both “beautiful and terrible”. When he asked why it was terrible, she stated, “It is the leap which they have to make, the awful height from which they must cast themselves down to the depths beneath, there to be broken on the rocks.” She then saw that once over the edge of the precipice, “the waters were like winged things, alive with joy, so utterly abandoned to the ecstasy of giving themselves that she could almost have supposed she was looking at a host of angels floating down on rainbow wings, singing with rapture as they went.” Casting down oneself for the sake of others, for the purpose of love is the crux of a relationship with God. It is loving others as He has loved us. God had to give up the life of His only Son and Jesus cast Himself willingly off the precipice for our sakes, to be broken on the rocks below. Much-Afraid realizes she has to cast herself down, along with her own desires and fears. Not only so she can be free, but also so she can go back and share this freedom and lovely brokenness with her Fearing relatives and friends. Casting herself down on the alter of sacrifice is how she found her new name. Much-Afraid became Grace and Glory and she went on to help others reach the beautiful and freeing high places of the Kingdom! Quotes from the book Hinds’ Feet on High Places,” by Hannah Hurnard; 1975
