Took 3 shots out my hotel window in Montreux and stitched them together manually in Photoshop.
This shot was taken on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland in the town of Montreux. The combination of the setting sun, the lack of wind and the slight overcast conditions created the metallic look of the water – which looked like it had the consistency of mercury. Interestingly, this location is where Deep Purple wrote the song Fire in the Sky.

my short film Beautiful Switzerland
We decided not to visit Lausanne but instead to catch the cable train from Montreux into the mountains, meandering our way in and out of tunnels, past alpine chalets covered with powdered snow, up into the clouds then the brilliant sunshine beyond. It was a dramatic journey, reminiscent of an airline’s ascent. Along the way the train picked up convivial Swiss daytrippers on their way to the slopes at Rochers de Naye, as, we soon realised, were we. They all seemed to know each other and I’m sure at least a few of them wondered where our ski boots were and why our calves seemed relatively puny. At the summit of Rochers de Naye, 2042 metres above sea level, we took in the arresting panorama – islands of mountain peaks rising out of a sea of cloud far below, their white peaks contrasting with the deepest blue sky. We watched the skiers for a while, then bought sandwiches and drinks and sat in deck chairs on the edge of this cliff, wondering if life could get any better. I say "wondering" because I found myself contemplating why the euphoric present can never compete with the purity of nostalgia. For instance, as amazing an experience as it was, I found myself fighting back the feeling that there was an even higher level of perfection just beyond my grasp, if only I had sunglasses, if my t-shirt would stop coming untucked from my jeans, if I could stop thinking about the cliff edge crumbling into an avalanche or me sliding off it in my treadless sneakers. And, of course, the niggling pre-lament that it would all be over in an hour or so when we would head back down beneath the clouds and remember how cold the beer had tasted while sitting in those deck chairs on the roof of Europe, and how warm the sun was up there. But even by then, several waves of nostalgia had smoothed the memory into something perfectly unique, ethereal and serene.

There are few moments that approach perfection. This was one of them. Rocher de Naye, Switzerland.

Statue of Freddie Mercury at the edge of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French (from Lacus Lemanus) or Genfersee in German), Montreux, Switzerland*. Shot with my Nikon D100, Lensbaby 3G, star aperture (appx f4), .42 x wideangle adapter, and hand-held ND filter (shutter speed 1/4000s) I revisited the statue after a particularly grey day in Montreux as the sun had come out – I had planned this image before setting off. The only difficulty was that as the sun set, it also moved towards the left of the image – as I wanted to get the lake, rather than the diving platform, as the background, I had to take the shot a little sooner than I would have liked. The star effect on the sun’s reflections was created by the star aperture ring in the lensbaby – as this is about f4 I had to use an ND filter to prevent the picture being over exposed. The only post processing was adding the vignette – the blur is all in camera but I like the way this seems to add movement to his hand. Thanks to Kilian for the translations.
I took this photo last August in Montreux that lies on the north east shore of Lake Geneva.
