By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

  • Can you feel it? Love and care… I have taken this photograph because I’ve seen a lovely picture of love and care before my eyes… / Two years later I went back to the negative, scanned it (with love and care, of course; here I mean taking care for properly balanced lights and shadows above all, with no important details lost, because the photograph was taken in a room with poor light), made some minor corrections (color curves, desaturated, toned…) and added a frame with text. Can you feel it? Love and care… / / — / This is a version with a frame designed to include the title. For a version without the frame, click here please:

  • This is an other photo from the pregnancy collaboration series with Geoff Coleman. I am 5 months pregnant and Geoff and I wanted to try a more sassy than usual illustration of pregnancy. For this photo I boosted the colours and contrast to emphasize the light (we were blessed with fantastic natural light from the window) and tones, and burnt most of the background which was distracting. A very slight blur was added for a diffused yet natural glow.

  • Songbirds that I have photographed in my yard are showcased in each of the twelve months of the year. Included are the painted bunting, Northern cardinal, American robin, Eastern bluebird, Carolina chickadee, ruby-throated hummingbird, goldfinch, common house finch, mockingbird, and the tufted titmouse.

  • Flower macros constitute this calendar for 2009. I tried to match flowers with months in which they grow here in Louisiana; I am not 100% accurate but I tried. Camellias in January; amaryllis in February; iris in March; calla lilies in April; bottlebrush in May; roses in June; the splendor of the entire garden in July; wild grass seed blossoming in August; lily of the Nile in September; tiger lily in October; chrysanthemum in November; magnolia in December. (I know magnolias do not bloom in December but it looked like a Christmas candle so I chose it for that month). Hope you enjoy the view. (This is the second of my Petal Power calendars. See the other one as well if you have time).

  • from my Celtic Luna Month Calendar, available soon “The evening comes, the fields are still. / The tinkle of the thirsty rill, / Unheard all day, ascends again; / Deserted is the half-mown plain, / Silent the swaths! the ringing wain, / The mower’s cry, the dog’s alarms, / All housed within the sleeping farms! / The business of the day is done, / The last-left haymaker is gone. / And from the thyme upon the height, / And from the elder-blossom white / And pale dog-roses in the hedge, / And from the mint-plant in the sedge, / In puffs of balm the night-air blows / The perfume which the day forgoes. / And on the pure horizon far, / See, pulsing with the first-born star, / The liquid sky above the hill! / The evening comes, the fields are still.” Mathew Arnold

The Rottweiler, or Rottweil Metzgerhund (“Butchers Dog”), is a “medium to large size, stalwart dog” breed originating in Germany as a herding dog. It is a hardy and very intelligent breed. Rottweilers also worked as draught dogs, pulling carts to carry meat and other products to market. “Rottweiler breeders aim at a dog of abundant strength, black coated with clearly defined rich tan markings, whose powerful appearance does not lack nobility and which is exceptionally well suited to being a companion, service and working dog.” The Rottweiler was kept busy in these traditional roles until the mid-19th century when railroads replaced droving for getting livestock to market. Although there are still Rottweilers working stock all over the world, many other roles have been found for this versatile breed. During the first and second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles including as messenger, draught and guard dogs. Currently they are often used as search and rescue, assistance, guide dogs for the blind, guard and police dogs in addition to their traditional roles. Although an extremely versatile breed used in recent times for many other purposes, the Rottweiler is first and foremost one of the oldest, if not the oldest, of herding breeds. A multi-faceted herding and stock protection dog of exceptional ability, it is capable of working all kinds of livestock under a wide variety of conditions. The breed is an ancient one, whose history stretches back to the Roman Empire. In those times, the legions traveled with their meat on the hoof and required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle. One route the army traveled was through Württemberg and on to the small market town of Rottweil. The principal ancestors of the first Rottweilers during this time was supposed to be the Roman droving dog, local dogs the army met on its travels, and dogs with molosser appearance coming from England and The Netherlands. This region eventually became an important cattle area, and the descendants of the Roman cattle dogs proved their worth in both driving and protecting the cattle from robbers and wild animals. However, by the end of the 19th century as railroads became the main method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that in 1900 there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil.
