The year ahead ...

We spent most of January catching our breath and thinking about the year ahead. We’re not entirely done with out thinking – because the devil’s always in the details. But there are a few outcomes I’d like to share. We think we need to communicate ‘more betterer’. We’re often so busy ‘doing’ that we forget to tell you what’s going on and why we’re doing particular things. So we’ll try to be better and more regular communicators. The way we view RedBubble is that we’re in a partnership with the artists on the site. This influences every element of our thinking. And the partnership works like this – we take care of the boring back of house work to free people up to concentrate on their art / writing – and marketing themselves. We solve hard boring problems that individually are very difficult to solve (e.g. manufacturing and shipping goods around the world). But we can’t do everything. We’re a team of 16 – and we’re flat out. Over the next eighteen months we want to grow this to a team of 30 – but even then we won’t be able to do all the things we want. We want to involve you in RedBubble. For example, we’d love to be more involved in selling your work – but the reality is that out of the 16 people in the company now only one has a sales focused role. So we need your help to sell your work. And I think you’ll be far better sales people than we could ever be – but what we can do is to provide the tools / advice to make the selling process easier. This is one of the things we’ll be working on this year. Better tools and advice. Better products. Sales features. I am completely inspired by wikipedia. I’m inspired by the fact that it’s trusting and it works. And this is what I want RedBubble to be – a trusting site. Over the course of the year we want to hand over control of the site to the members of the site. Just like wikipeadia. So if you’re keen to get involved there’ll be lots of opportunities! And this trust needs to extend very deeply – this year we’re going to be very open with our thinking and internal numbers. Our view is that open communication is essential to a healthy partnership. For example, for those of you who wonder about the financial side of things – the current profit margin on the RB base price is 10%. Over the course of this year we’ll be looking to improve our logistics to increase this to 23%. With this money we need to pay all our expenses – staff salary, equipment et cetera. Here’s a quick snapshot of the RB team and our jobs (to give you a sense of what we’re all doing day-to-day) : Xavier – Website builder / Justin – Website builder and thinker / Hop – Answers e-mails and chases up orders / Bridget – Does the books / Ben – Website builder / Tom – Looks after logistics / Ed – Looks after t-shirts / Dave Cheney – Keeps the computers running / Fran – Looks after writing / John – Website builder / Jo – People stuff on the site / Dave Librach – Groups and other people related stuff on the site / Martin – Thinker / Peter – Bus driver and everything else / Grant – Website builder and seller of stuff / Paul – Makes things look beautiful Thoughts, comments, feedback all welcome. Most importantly, are we heading on the right track? Peter

The road map for the next few months
by RedBubbleSo, we said January is thinking month, yet here we are mid-Februa…
So, we said January is thinking month, yet here we are mid-February and we’re still thinking quite a lot! It’s been incredibly valuable to us to take a step back, look at what we’re really trying to achieve here, and how we make all the pieces fit. The first thing I guess you need to know about RedBubble is that we have no shortage of ideas, and no shortage of suggestions from the community. It’s actually quite rare that we hear of a bad idea — most ideas are great, or as Xavier would say, winners. So when we’re faced with hundreds or thousands of great ideas, the challenge is deciding what’s going to solve the biggest problems for the most people, and making sure we stay true to The Big Plan. A huge part of The Big Plan is the buying and selling. Artists are happy when they sell their work, buyers are happy when they find something they want to buy. With this is in mind, we’re going going to be spending a lot of our time over the next few months looking at our products, as well as how they’re bought and how they’re sold. What does that mean? Hopefully that means… Revised wall art products We don’t think we’ve got the wall art stuff right yet, and this is going to change. Pete’s already previewed our plans for framed wall art with interchangeable matted prints, but this is just the tip of the iceberg — we have some top secret stuff wall art products we really hope we can get ready. Wall art needs to be big and we still haven’t been able to find a way to economically ship big wall art around the globe, so this is high on our list (still). Post cards Our greeting cards still need some attention, but we’re also really keen to do post cards and some other printed promotional stuff that helps the artist sell their work and promote themselves. Photo books Calendars were a roaring success (and they weren’t even publicly available for sale), so we’re pretty keen to get a photo book product out there for everyone to buy. More T-shirt options We’re keen to have more colors and styles available to the buyers, as well as more options for the artist (like front and back printing, shifting the print area around on the tee, etc). Better selling tools As Pete recently discussed in the year ahead, we feel we’re in a partnership with the artists, and we need their help to promote their work and sell it. So we want to give you tools to do that. Business cards and post cards will help, but so will some technical stuff like allowing you to have a more product-oriented profile page and some more widgets to embed in other websites. Personally, I’d really like to help other artists sell their stuff by promoting it, so that’s something we’re going to explore as well. Better buying tools Not everyone is a buyer, but for those who come to RedBubble (or to your profile) with cash in their hand looking to buy something, we want to make it really easy. Mooks and publications In addition to In The Moment (on sale in a few days) and our current competition Gaia, Fran is working hard to introduce more periodical publications in the form of Mooks (not a magazine, not quite a book, get it?) to get more of your fantastic writing and art published. Disclaimers and footnotes This is the big stuff that we really think will make a difference to RedBubble over the next few months, but it’s not a definitive list at all. There’s no guarantee we can get all of this done of course, and there’s obviously other things that we’ll need to take care of along the way, but everyone needs a plan and something to focus on. Hopefully you’re as excited about this stuff as we are! — Peter & Justin

A RedBubble calendar review - with pics

By Darren Stones With the New Year upon us, have you considered where you are going to purchase your ‘08 calendars? Before you go shopping, spare a moment or two. The courier has just delivered a new-release RedBubble calendar courtesy of James Pierce. Calendar contains pics from onetonshadow. My first impression of the calendar is that it’s a premium product and has plenty of weight – not some cheap and nasty looking thing. It’s an A3 size – in plain speak that measures; 11.7in x 16.5in or 297mm x 420mm. The cover page consists of a white matte paper which has a chunky feel to it (300gsm for the tech minded). Quite simply, it looks and feels good. From a marketing viewpoint, I believe it needs the artist’s name included on the cover page. Something for the RedBubble team to consider. The monthly calendar pages are made of (175gsm) white matte paper which has a clean fresh look. The numerals on each monthly page are not overly large, although they are easy to read. Being grey, they are more subtle than obvious and don’t distract from the artwork. There’s plenty of room to scrawl birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and due dates for your favourite debts. The title of each image and artist’s name is printed underneath the image on each of the calendar month pages. The artist’s RedBubble URL is also printed in the bottom right corner of each monthly page. So, there’s good exposure for those seeking world domination regarding sales. The binding is the white plastic-coated type and it allows for easy turning of each page. It seems a good choice for the product as the pages hang flat. Remember, 2008 is a leap year so there’s a smidgeon of extra value contained. Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – for sale Reviewer’s note: My qualification for reviewing calendars; I’ve been on the planet for nearly 15,000 days.

One Month of Silence

My husband, Jay, and I have had long, intellectual, emotional, and logical discussions about my art and it’s meaning. In the course of these discussions I learned a lot about how others see my work. Here are his words: Your work affects me in a myriad of ways. It mostly depends on how I am feeling at the moment I see it. I can feel great sadness, happiness, joy, or intense anger. It all depends on what’s going on inside me at the time. When I first saw Doomsday Clock, I felt an overwhelming sense of my own mortality. The second hand sweeping upward reminded me that time marches inevitably forward and I have only a short time to make my mark on this world. It does not matter to me, Helen, that you made Doomsday Clock as a political piece to bring awareness to the nuclear weapons threat. I don’t care why you took that photo. I don’t care what you have to say about it. It means what it means to me. You get so wrapped up in trying to get a message out about something you feel strongly about that you forget that people are emotional beings. They will see what they want to see no matter what you have to say about it. There is where you have made a great mistake. You expect that your message will transcend the art. That is something you will never achieve. People will always respond to your art with their hearts not with their minds. Then you get so caught up in trying to convince people that their hearts are wrong that your tear yourself apart. I offer you this challenge Helen: for one month, you will post your work without descriptions, without comment, without links to any website. You post just your art and leave it alone. You can’t respond to comments with words, and you can’t write a journal entry to defend your work. Post your work and go away from it. Let people feel and express what your art means to them. You can respond to comments only with more art. It will be hard as hell for you to keep your mouth shut, but you will be a better person, and a better artist, in the end. I accept the challenge, dear Husband.

Melbourne writers' meetings - first Sunday of every month!

The Melbourne Writers’ Meetings have been amazingly enjoyable and rewarding – take a look through my journals for the previous ones. However, organising these little outings takes some patience and hard work, so with that in mind, it’s been suggested that we fix a regular day. The meetings will now be held on the first Sunday of every month, in a central location, in the afternoon. If enough people ask for an evening meeting, we can add an extra one, or one out east/west/ etc, but the date should remain fixed for the regular ones. So the next meeting is April 6th, in a city location, details to be confirmed (* see below). I know that won’t suit everyone, but I’m realising you can’t please ‘em all! Ideas for the next meeting – people can bring two pieces of writing from a bubbler whose work they admire – this is a fabulous way to spread the word about the amazing talent in this place. Much as we enjoy each others’ work, it’s so rewarding to stumble across someone new and unknown – and even more exciting to pass that on to someone else. Also, for those ready to show their own work, we’ve decided to choose a theme for each meet that you can write to – and this month’s theme is ‘feast’. It was remarked on how central food is to our sense of community and connection. Write wherever that topic takes you (and yes, I have several ‘feast’ pieces in my writing folio, but I’m not cheating – I’ll write something new!). Of course, if you’re not ready to share your words, that’s fine too. Feel free to bubblemail me with any questions, and leave your messages here if you’d like to come along. Phew!

Just got word from the British Embassy that my entry clearance has been issued; yay! I’m surprised how fast that was – they told me it would take 5-15 business days to process – unless those days include delivery (I don’t actually have the visa in my hands right now; only got word that it has been processed and it needs to be delivered to me). So what this means is the next four months I will be in Rome for school, and the four months after that I will be in the UK! Now I have to book a flight to Rome :P. That’s right, I still have to do that – I have been delaying because of several complicated matters and I’m still looking for answers. Let’s just say there are some rules in regards to booking flights with visas, and I need to make sure I’m doing things right and not wasting extra money. Hope to get over that soon, then I can focus on packing and getting ready.

Hi To All My Friends in RedBubble Land!!! Thought I’d let you all know that I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to “Reply to any Comments” on my work, or Comment on anyone else’s work, as I am taking a 2 months Caravan Holiday up to Cape York, North Queensland. Cape York is the most northern point of Australia. I will certainly miss the contact with the many lovely people that I have come to know on RB!!! I so appreciate the many wonderful and encouraging comments on my work and the overwhelming support from you all!! Thank You All So Very Much!! I will be busy preparing for our trip over the next few days or more, as I intend to leave by the end of the week, so I thought I would send this out sooner rather than later! Hope to return home around mid June with many holiday pics to upload onto RB for you all to see!!! Until Then….. Take care!! Regards / Blossom (Marilyn)

My flight to Rome is due Aug 24th, a week + a day from now! I’ve been really busy with the packing and preparation lately; and have been slow on comments; I still come on RB everyday though and look at a few works, and for those new works I haven’t left a comment on, it isn’t because I’m trying to be ignorant! I’ve been running around, but I’m never totally away from the bubble; though I’m less active now than I used to be. My packing is almost done but I’ll probably be going back to see what I can take out of my luggage to ensure I don’t go beyond the weight limit :P. I’ve always managed to be below the weight limit; but this time I’m going away for 8 months; accommodating for both the hot season and the cold season (Rome is very hot in September; and London can be very cold in winter); plus I have to carry some school stuff with me this time, and I can anticipate that I’ll be buying more things in Rome; and maybe London too. To Europe and back I can have two luggages checked in, each weighing up to 50lbs. plus one carry-on – this I am used to. However, while flights within Europe are cheap, the luggage limit is more strict; Ryan airlines allows one check in up to 15 kg (33lbs.) and one carry-on so I have to try to not bring too much now anyhow (If anyone knows some better deals I’d love to hear! A train ride option would be nice too if any :) ). Aside from packing I’ve just reformatted my laptop. During my previous school semester my laptop kept running into many problems and I had such a difficult semester partly because of that. Strangely though, after the semester was over and I began my internship, I stopped running into those errors – as though my laptop had a personality of its own and just decided to go on strike during the school semester (Hmmm, maybe it’s time I give it a name :p). During school I always have to do so much work on the computer; doing heavy graphics from time to time, and keeping the computer on over night – I make it work hard; it must really hate school :P So the past 7 months I didn’t run into problems but decided to reformat to be on the safe side; let my laptop forget all the torments from school in the same old town and let it enjoy brand new memories in Rome ~ so long as it doesn’t get stolen :P (has happened to some students who went to Rome in previous years). If that happens I can’t share my Rome photos with you lovely people here so let’s all hope everything goes smoothly! Ciao!
