The competition doesn’t officially start until the 31st of March but we thought we’d give you advance notice so you can get to work on your monsters. They update late in the day usually, so if you prefer your comics with breakfast – wait til wednesday. ;o) Also, this month sees the return of Steve Steiner with his THIRD shot at the Zuda trophy with his best entry yet, Middle-Aged Monster. This man is the real deal. He has a unique style all his own, yet his three entries have all been wildly different. A true talent is on display here and it’s about time we helped him seal the deal. Plus, Middle-Aged Monster, in its all-vector glory, is just damned hilarious. I whipped up this little ad for him which I’m popping around a few places, as I noticed I still had some leftover Project Wonderful funds. What better way to use them? i think i can never apologise and thank enough.. To all those who’ve been there for me during my disappearance, who’ve been worried for me, asking for me.. thank you so so much for your concern. thank you so so so much.. as some might have noticed, i sorta almost totally disappeared frm here last 1-2 weeks.. the reason is that it might just be because i changed my eating med timing.. i used to have it after i wake up from sleep. start Sep, i had it before sleep (no thanks to fasting period). i also realised i accidentally missed my doc appt earlier this month, which means my med’s running out. but don’t worry! i got my fresh batch of med already.. n_n” basically i haven’t been able to comment and fav on all the wonderful pieces that everyone’s been uploading, cos i was too troubled, i don’t wanna give a half hearted comment. i love the works, so i really wanna comment and fav them when i’m feeling ok and can give my most sincere comments.. =D i also wanna thank the buyer of Chibi Frazzle tee and S.T.F.U tee! Continuing my sketch series, here’s a long-ago abandoned piece freshly mined from the depths. I think that I’d made the mistake of looking at some of Geoff Darrow’s insanely detailled work, and decided that I wanted to give it a crack. There’s some stuff I like in this (mainly the primary monster), and I might start re-working it down the track, but for now, it can remain a curio… And a detail shot (more available upon request): For those who like to know, this one’s straight into the Mac via Photoshop and my trusty Wacom monitor tablet. Okay, so I’ve kicked off this project, and in the interests of involving the people around me I’ve decided to get some involvement from you, my loving followers and vaguely interested onlookers. Okay, I asked and you delivered. The next monster up is M for Manticore. I’ve put together a quick sketch for feedback from my fellow illustrators and artists. Please have a look at this and give me some critical feedback.. what works of course, but also what doesn’t. Let me try to explain my thinking. A Manticore is of Persian origin and has the body of a lion, the head of a person, the tail of a dragon or scorpion, then horns, wings, whatever else. It’s also got three rows of shark like teeth. (Wikipedia entry) That was the base I was working from, but I wanted to make it distinctly my own creation. I thought the body of a lion was the most important thing.. but it’s not a lion, which is why I gave it more of a chinese lion mane. For the tail, I wanted something scorpionesque because, well, I like the look of it :) The face had me thinking.. the thing is I didn’t want to just go a human face because that didn’t seem right. I decided it made sense that it would have a human-like face.. something that, if you saw it (while fleeing for your life I assume), you would describe it as “human”.. but it is distinctly not. I wanted something a little bit cute, with a shark-like mouth. I tried a variety of poses, but I preferred it just sitting comfortably. Just chilling. I don’t want these monsters to be scary or intimidating.. because monsters are your friend ;) My current idea is to give it a red tinge, with fire in the mouth and nostrils.. I’ve always associated the Manticore with deserts and fire and the like. I’ll think a bit more about final colours when I get the initial sketch sorted though. Oh, and sorry about the dodgy quality, I didn’t have access to a scanner so I just took a photo with my phone

For Halloween I thought I would put my story The Haunted together with the images so you can get into the mood of the ghosts and goblins that will be running through the night. Enjoy and dont get scared. ‘-) The Haunted I received some items in a box the other day from my late uncle’s estate. As I was going through some old letters and papers I ran across some items that were very strange to me. you see my uncle was into old haunted house’s, ghost’s and such. I have never believed in such things, but what I came across in his items even boggled my mind. In the mid 1920’s he was investigating a house that was supposed to be haunted in Kansas City. I remember my father talking about it when I was a kid, he said my uncle went alone to the supposed haunted house to check it out; all he had with him was a camera. The next morning they found him out by the street completely out of his mind. All he would say over and over was “The Haunted is coming”….he never recovered. As I went through his belongings I found an old box camera and noticed that it still had film in it ….strange there was only one picture on it…… I thought I would share it with you my friends and see what you think. The Haunted 2 -The Breeder My God, I was sure the image I developed from my dead Uncle’s box camera was the only picture, but when I searched further I found another roll of undeveloped film hidden in an old leather pouch. What unspeakable horror must have been in that house, I can see why he went insane. As I develop the film I will show you my friend what horror had taken over this old house. My Uncle didn’t leave any notes about what he found so I will try to explain the best that I can. This picture shows such a retched image its hard to describe. The only thing I can call it, is “The Breeder”. On close examination it looks like a baby is living off her body, such a sickening sight, and the woman , if you can call her that, has pus boils all over her body, just gazing on this is making me deathly ill. The look on the monster’s face makes it seem my Uncle caught it off guard. My friend words escape me on what I have found here. Do I dare go on and see what other horrified works of the devil are to be seen on this film? ......... Gaze upon this madness as I search my mind what I should do. The Haunted 3 -The Elder It’s so very hard to comprehend what my late Uncle endured in this hell house before he lost his mind. My brain is racing and I’m so tired from the lack of sleep. These horrifying images are consuming me. What an unspeakable sight they are, I feel them clawing at my mind and eating at my very being. “Oh ok”, the third image is about to develop, “MY WHAT EVER IS HOLY”!!! Give me a second to catch my breath; my heart is thumping so hard it feels that it’s going to burst through my chest. I’ll try to my best ability to describe this image. It’s like this ghoul is guarding the doorway, and it seems so very old, I shall call this thing from Hell “The Elder”. “My I’m feeling so tired and dizzy I feel like I’m about to pppass ooouut”………………… The Haunted 4 -The Guardian of the House OOOHH!! How long was I passed out? These damn pictures are consuming me; I feel like they are eating my very soul. There is one more image to develop, should I dare? I must, I have to see what drove my Uncle mad in this house forsaken by God. OOOH!! What the hell can this monstrosity be? How did my poor crazy Uncle get out of this house without being torn from limb to limb? This demon from the depths of Hell looks like some sort of a warrior or guard, for the time being I shall call him the “Guardian of the House”. My mind is racing with all types of thoughts, I feel that I must go to this house and see for myself if this if real or not, or should I dare not? I might have myself driven mad like my Uncle. For the time being my dear friend cast your gaze on this new demonic image, while I think this over………… The Haunted 5 -The Sacrifice Hello!! You don’t know me, my name is Toby. My Father asked me to come over here and watch his place while he went to Kansas City. He wasn’t very clear when I talked to him last week but, he said I should mention to you something about him checking on a house, he said that you would know what he was talking about, he really seemed upset and very nervous. I thought that I would hear from him by now, but he must be very busy with checking on that house. You know, I wish he would have told me he was expecting a package, it came just a short time ago, in fact I was just getting ready to open it. Can you wait for a minute while I see what this is? Let me get a knife to open it……..that’s strange ……. The only thing in the package is an old box camera……. I hate to ask you to wait a bit longer but this is so very strange, the camera seems to have some film in it. Let me go and develop it and see what this is all about. Make yourself a drink while I’m working on this……….MY GOD!! MY GOD!! What the hell is this…..a damn joke? HERE! Look at this, what does this image mean? LOOK CLOSE!! ………………………THAT’S MY FATHER!!!!!!!!!!
