I think we all take ‘something’ for granted, whether it’s heat in the winter, or that the television will turn on when we hit the power button, we’ll have food in the fridge when we open the door, and yes sometimes we even take friendships for granted. We just know that those people will always be there. Sometimes we get busy with what we want to do and get involved with the ‘me’ outlook. “I need to get this done”, “I want to work on this”, “I have to go there” that when there is a friend in need and calling out for help or comfort, we just know they’ll forgive us and everything will be fine….so we don’t take those 15 minutes to drop everything to lend an ear or a shoulder because they are old friends and will understand. / I got a letter from a dear friend of mine recently, her mom was diagnosed with luekemia, given 3-6 months to live. She took her mom to spend a few days on the beach and when they returned she passed away. That got me thinking about all of this, how much and how often we take each other for granted, assuming “they’ll be there tomorrow, I want to do this right now!” / In June 2001 I was diagnosed with Cancer and given the option of surgery or death. Very simple terms and not really much of a choice, I was very blessed to have a skilled doctor who removed every bit of it, but I live with the knowledge that any day at any moment it could come back and start growing inside of me again, trying to take my life from me. Any one of us could go at any moment…......will those 15 minutes we couldn’t spare for a friend…...be the last 15 minutes we could have had with them??? I know that I don’t ever want to have to wonder that about anyone that is near and dear to me, just some thoughts that have been going through my mind while all this crazy drama has been going on in my life. / I’ll fill you all in later about the drama, but right now I can’t get into it in public, because if the wrong person sees it before it’s time, my children are the ones who will suffer. Sorry for the downer journal entry, but I feel better now that it is out of my system. / Thanks for for the 15 minutes, you could have used doing something else.

A number of people have asked for my take on “In the Moment”. Firstly, I am much more interested in seeing how others interpret this expression than in trying to propagate my own evolving view about it. Anything I say is but one view and I expect the final publication to be a kaleidoscope of many visions. This said, I came to the idea of “In the Moment” in the practice of yoga and later meditation. In these contexts it relates to being completely at one with the instant in which you are living. As a way of being, beyond the narrow confines of yoga or meditative practice, it is about absorption in the present, with the shadows of your history left behind and the worries of the future transcended. We all experience this feeling at times (e.g. when our car is skidding across an icy road or, more beautifully, when making love). It is invariably an intensely clarifying experience that, even when dire, has a sort of wonderful intensity about it. (Soldiers often say the experience of battle can be intoxicating even in its horror.) Our everyday challenge is to bring this orientation to other situations in our lives – the conversations we have, the work we do, the play we indulge in, even the pain we feel. If we can do this we can live more richly. An aspect of being in the moment is freeing oneself from notions of relative importance. It is very easy to believe that your career is intrinsically more important than your play; or that your charity has greater value than a moment with your child. You live richly when you simply live, free of these judgments. This is notably seen in our relationships. Most of us will have met a person who seems to completely listen when we speak to them and how wonderful this is for us – these people (Mother Teressa had this gift) are completely “in the moment” with us. We are liberated and honored by their lack of judgement and simple attention (even if we cannot reciprocate). “In the Moment” is almost synonymous with the ideas of being “present” and “mindfulness”. There is a great deal of writing about these ideas from both an Eastern spiritual bent and also from a Western psychological perspective. I am not expert on these topics – just a pilgrim on the road. Very rarely do those shackles of history or future anxiety fall from me. When they do it is profoundly liberating. I hope through this competition to perhaps learn a little more.

Talk about a tough decision! Our judges slaved over entries day and night to bring you these excellent choices. These will not be the only winners – any works that are chosen to feature in the final publication will also be getting a $100 bubble voucher. Woo Hoo! / Read more about the In The Moment Competition here Overall Visual Art Winner / Prize: Leonardo Da Vinci’s A Treatise on Painting / or a Wacom Intuos3 12”x19” Tablet plus USD $500 RedBubble voucher Geneva Lake Divers by markhayward / There is so much going on in this picture: you have the collective spirit of youth perfectly represented by young boys in action on a hot summers day, some of the figures are lazily waiting on different parts of the tower happy to watch the others take their turn on the board, the figures in full flight are in a circular acrobatic composition and the whole picture is anchored by main figure in the foreground who wears an expression of satisfaction at the days events. Nearly every character in the picture is “in the moment”. It instantly brings back my own youth at the local swimming pool. Great composition and technically well executed. Category Winner: Photography / Prize: $200 RedBubble Voucher How Young to Understand Death by Richards / Of all the emotions experienced at a funeral, bewilderment, shock and anger are three of the most prevalent. It seems the boy in the foreground and the officer in / the middle show all three at once in this very poignant photograph of the first police funeral in Windsor, Ontario in 150 years. The viewer can feel the pain at a glance, / and then wonder what the mourners are looking at exactly. The coffin being lowered to the ground, a priest giving the eulogy, or something else peculiar to this particular service. / With a classic triangular composition this photograph carries a strong emotive, narrative and visual story. Category Winner: Traditional / Prize: $200 Redbubble Voucher Letters from Longbeach by JASHERLYNCH / The central figure is very mysterious in this very contemporary picture that puts the traditional idea of surfing as “fun” into a grimy, gritty visual context. The work is full of contrasts that makes me wonder about the state of mind of the person sending the postcard. Fortunately I can’t read the writing so i am left to make my own impression. I love the combination of mediums and the use of negative space. It is the sort of work that if I had it hanging on my bedroom wall would take me on a different emotional journey when I woke each morning. Category Winner: Digital Image / Prize: $200 RedBubble Voucher The endless walk by Geir Floede / Beautiful imagery of a person in the wilderness wearing a track in deep into the snow. She has come from offstage but looks set to walk endlessly in a circle til she / breaks free . . . or someone breaks into her world. She is definitely “in the moment”. Very understated, exceptionally powerful. Overall Writing Winner / Prize: Sylvia Plath’s The Colossus / or a Macbook 13” plus USD $300 RedBubble voucher / Fish and Chip Goodbyes by Beatnikgal Category Winner: Short Story / Prize: $200 RedBubble Voucher / Anger is an energy by Sherriff Category Winner: Poem / Prize: $200 RedBubble Voucher / A Glimpse by wishingonstars

feeling cold grapes go warm in my mouth before swallowing screaming out ‘stop’ when we drive past a hard rubbish pile with something interesting on it waking up early and listening to the sounds outside the way I can never get comfortable in the chairs at the theatre watching children make characters and stories out of thin air spilling my drink on the floor and noticing the shape of the puddle resembles a horse songs that I had forgotten about coming up on random shuffle seeing a simple pattern or colour or shape that reminds me of a whole story closing my eyes when I feed my cat and realising her food smells better than most of the meals I can cook using a mirror to look myself in the eye when I’m crying

40,000 members, 1000 copies – you do the math! - Which works are being published? It’s the answer we’ve all been waiting for. I’m thrilled to be able to announce all the works that have been included in limited edition journal, In The Moment. With such an outstanding level of entries, it was tough work for our judges. Each published artist and writer will receive a copy of In The Moment and a $200 RedBubble Voucher for category winners and $100 for other published works. (Individual winners will be contacted directly next week) CLICK HERE for a list of all the finalists Buying A Copy Of In The Moment At 12 noon GMT, February 29th, The limited edition journal In The Moment goes on sale. (AUD$29.95) Once released on Feburary 29th, the In The Moment button on the homepage will change. Clicking on it will take you to a purchasing screen. It’s then a matter of following the simple steps. After choosing how many copies you wish to buy you will be taken to your shopping cart. You can remove items and amend quantities before continuing. The last step is to pay for your order via paypal or credit card. Only once all steps are completed is your purchase finalised. Tip: Review and amend any items already saved in your cart before February 29th (or buy ITM without logging in to bypass your saved cart completely) News about our Gaia – The Living Planet competition In The Moment has been a mammoth effort and we are so proud of the final result. However one thing we have learned, is that having the best possible final product takes lots of time and effort. More than we expected. It takes time to create, choose and submit and entry. It takes time for judges to have a good long think and decide on the winners. Once the judging is completed, the process of designing, proofing, printing and packaging requires a lot of care, attention and time. We’d rather give you an amazing product that makes you go ‘wow,’ than rush something out the door. And we feel that we owe it to the artists being published to represent their work as best we can. Time, it’s a wonderful thing. And to give everybody more of it, we’re extending the deadline for entries to Gaia until April 16th, with the publication to come out in May. A HUGE thanks to everyone who has been a part of this journey, especially all the artists and writers who have shared their creativity. Your contribution and enthusiasm has been inspirational.

I found a new location for photographing the sunset, I found it by accident last night, so tonight I decided to go back a bit earlier and have a browse around. I parked up about 8-00pm and walked over to the field that i had spotted. At the back of the field is a long line of trees and i decided they would enhance my sunset pics. I had about an hour to kill as sunset would be about 9-00pm. As I waited I saw something brown “fly” into the field, I got closer and searched for the pheasant that I thought it would be, suddenly a deer appeared in front of me and I thought it was going to jump over my head and away, but it saw me and turned around and rushed off in the opposite direction. Once my heart stopped pounding I cursed that I hadn’t time to get a pic of my very first encounter with a deer. I carried on waiting and to my amazement a few moments later the deer reappeared stood in front of me on the other side of the fence and stared at me, I slowly raised my camera and took a photo and with that the deer headed off again bounding across the field i did manage another photo but it’s a bit dark. Stare down / Running away / Wow that happened a couple of hours ago and I am still gobsmacked and thrilled by the close call. I just had to come back home and share the magical moment with you all. I will be going back to hopefully meet again and get a better photo. I have put my photos on a journal as they are not good enough for my portfolio.

This fine picture by Aaron reminds me of an old adage: You can’t see the forest for the trees. Today I’ll write about the trees. Here’s what we’re working on right now: Russell – Implementing the new MyBubble (the visual look and feel); designing a new homepage; designing a new show work page; updating the design of groups (sneak peak here) Jason – Executing a new PPC advertising campaign (to sell more of your work); planning and launching a new e-mail marketing campaign (to sell more of your work); approaching other websites to look for extra sales opportunities (to sell more of your work); managing the development of a new Facebook application for RB; managing the introduction of a new t-shirt partner in the US Xavier – Building the new MyBubble (it’s going to be functionally complete tomorrow) John – Planning and building the ability to print larger designs on t-shirts. Implementing some fraud detection software (we have to deal with an annoying amount of fraud). Jo – Sick today; but when she’s back on deck she’s working on breathing new life into the DailyWrap (and helping with customer service) Rhana – Thinking and planning for how we can help group hosts (and improve groups more generally); waiting patiently for the development resources to become available to implement a new plan for the forums Nat – Launching a few different fun initiatives in the community (three from memory) and assisting the the logistics of shipping goods to the UK (we’re going to try to speed up shipments to the UK). Ed – Has a secret project this week (he won’t tell me) and when he’s not doing that he’s helping plan out the introduction of hoodies and helping with the creative genius behind the sales campaigns. Peter – Nothing. Zilch. I wish. I’m revisiting our logistics to see how we can ship things cheaper and faster. I’ve got to do some paperwork for German VAT. I’m updating the RB financial modeling and budget so we know what the future looks like; and planning out the things we’ll be looking at next week. What does this all add up to? A busy week. Cheers, Peter
“Be quiet now for Daddy – my medicine is just starting to kick in.” / Overheard in Disneyland !http://images-3.redbubble.net/img/art/...
“Be quiet now for Daddy – my medicine is just starting to kick in.” / Overheard in Disneyland During one late night phone call to LittleHelen, one of us casually mentioned “wouldn’t it be wonderful to fly over to the US and visit MsTrace?” And so we found ourselves on a 14 hour flight to the land of Reece’s peanut butter cups, cowboy hats and cheese in a can. It didn’t begin well. What you really don’t want to hear is ‘we’re sorry to inform you that Melbourne Airport is now closed due to fog.” And so I missed my flight to LA, as did Helen due to Brisbane fog, throwing us sideways to an airport hotel in Sydney, where the rain was relentless, the bar was closed, and my bags were missing. All we wanted was that moment when the flight attendant hands you the peanuts, and you know you’re on your way. A day late, the stretch limo purred to a halt in Los Angeles and we threw our arms open for Trace, a beautifully vibrant and generous soul who’s opened her house to us, right down to ‘B’ and ‘H’ personalised towels. Despite it being 8am, we cracked open the champagne as the limo slid through the streets of LA, and we were welcomed in fine style. It’s been a riot of vintage clothes shopping and tequila, high heels and chocolate, all in glorious Californian sunshine and deliriously high spirits. One of my first stops was an American supermarket, where I spent far too much time squealing at the food. Then there was Disneyland. Yes, I went to Disneyland, which will surprise many of you. Luckyvegetable has set me three challenges, the first being to get my photo taken with a Disney character. So I found myself lining up with shrieking children, and when Tigger caught sight of me, in suede mini skirt and tattoos, my fiery plaits topped by Tigger ears, he knelt at my feet and bowed down to me. It’s quite a skill entrancing grown men in animal costumes, but I use my power wisely. The rollercoaster delighted Helen and Trace, but I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to do it all again, or throw up. And if you think Bell in Disneyland is incongruous enough, prepare yourself for what follows. I refuse to discuss it. We drove through the Hollywood Hills for a good view of the sign, and found our favourite stars on Sunset Boulevard. I bought a killer corset at Frederick’s of Hollywood, and we sauntered through a flea market at Long Beach. Trace took us to a baseball game, where I threw myself into the spirit of things and devoured Coors with a mustard hot dog, and shared a bag of peanuts with the man next to me, throwing the shells on the ground and yelling at the LA Dodgers. We bought beautiful jewellery at Venice Beach and sang to the Beach Boys as we drove down Pacific Coast Highway, and drank peanut butter shakes as we watched a surfing competition at Huntington Beach. Trace’s lovely friends threw us a welcome bbq in a gorgeous 1920’s villa, sipping margaritas next to the jacuzzi as honkytonk music played and the delicious Mexican carne asada was grilled to perfection., It’s my birthday on Wednesday, so we jet off to New York tomorrow. As a pre-bday gift Trace treated me to lobster, truffles and champagne…I may never come home. And of course, there’s been plenty of vodka under the stars in Trace’s back yard, singing to Guns and Roses and taking the kind of silly snaps that tell a hundred stories, and will make me smile for some time. Helen and Trace send their love, and will post their stories soon. Until then, thanks for all the bubblemails, and I’ll speak to you from New York! And I mean it: I refuse to discuss the pink bridal Disney hat. Did you notice my buxom eyelashes? Helen / You speak really good English. What language do they speak in Australia? my pedicurist_ / It was poking me in places I shouldn’t be poked Helen / Did I hiss at someone in the bar last night? me / If I come to Australia, am I gonna be able to funk out? drunk guy in pub

Before we dive headlong into a sea of insipration, just a quick reminder that the Lensbaby Embrace the Blur Challenge is open for voting. And yes, there are a lot of entries. Please keep in mind that when voting, everyone starts off at a different image so there’s no one starting point. If you feel like flicking through all of the entries then that’s great, but if not, a browse through a few and a vote here and there is still hugely worthwhile, especially as you’ll be showing your support to those artists who entered. Right, with that little bit of business out of the way, it’s onto the inspiration … / / / Your proudest creative moments / / Next week is the first week of December which means the year will soon be drawing to a close. We’ve been doing some thinking about the past year, the skills we’ve learnt, the projects we’ve tackled and the art we’ve made and so today we’d like to hear about your creative highlights. Those moments that filled you with pride or encouraged you to keep plugging away. Jenny Wright’s journal from January this year shares one such moment: This Christmas, I gave my mother a drawing I had created of the two of us “Mommy and Me”. When she opened the gift, she put her hand over her mouth and began to cry tears of joy. It is is those moments that I know why I do this. Perhaps there are other reasons, some more superficial, or some even deeper, but knowing that my art can contribute positively in someone’s life, will always be the fuel to my fire. Avril Brand shared her new found love of teaching others: The courses are now so popular and my students are painting amazing works of art. From animals to portraits, landscapes and seascapes. The majority of them have NEVER painted before!!!! I never would have thought that I could enjoy teaching so much. The groups have also become a wonderful social network and everyone who joins in become a member of the ‘family’. ! Lynne Moore’s journal shows how proud her first exhibition made her feel I started painting because I had to find a way to express what I was feeling when my dad died. That need for expression has changed my life in so many ways. I am a better, stronger, more loving and compassionate person than I was before … Thanks for all your encouragement and support! I was at that exhibition today because of all of you here on RB. Your encouraging words gave me the confidence to take the next step. Thanks everyone! I love you all very much! Stephanie Rachel Seely was proud when her first book was published: I’ve been waiting for this day for a very long time. This book contains 4.5 years of writing and has been a daily project for the past 18 months. Needless to say, I am very happy and very proud! :) Thank you to everyone who has left kind comments on my poems, and thank you to all those who support my creativity. It means so much and keeps me going when I doubt myself. And Paul’s journal shows us how the little things can fill us with just as much joy: Picked my little 6 year old up from School today … having asked him what he wanted to do, he revealed he wanted to make pictures like his Dad!! So spent a fun filled two hours drawing planes, boats & trains & mounting them for him! the best time we have spent together for a long time … So over to you guys. What’s your proudest creative moment of 2009? Was there a particular occasion that gave you an incredible boost or made you feel proud of yourself as an artist? Nat

Just wanted to share this with you all…......This is only a young guy who already is making his mark on the world by giving up his job to become a photographer and musican as well as a busker…......You might see him around the streets of Brisbane and by the seems of this especially when its strange hours of the day…........certainly worth a read and to get inspired by….............. Karl Smith is The Lyrical “Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens I want to change the lives of others. To make them realise late nights and week days don’t matter – having to wake up the next day is not an excuse to lose opportunities of experiencing life – work is not an excuse to not travel the world – or travel the times. Ever ran the streets at 3 am… without alcohol? Ever just sat on a beach with a friend and just watched the sunrise… and then went to work? I’m here to change the lives of others, to be remembered when I leave, but not remembered for me, but remembered for them. So they know you can live however you really want to. I want people to learn to not ever let anything get in the way of adventure. Do something with someone – something random – on a Tuesday! Or Wednesday! At 4 am, 1:30am? Hell, lunch time! Just do something – go somewhere. Who cares where, just make it something different enough that you can remember it, because that’s what defines a moment: Whether or not it’s one worth remembering. Go to the movies on a Friday night and then go to the clubs on Saturday…. It might be fun; you might have a wonderful time… but do it a few more times and which time was which? Where did you actually go? What movie did you see??? What did you say that night – when did you remember holding hands? When was it? What time was it? You eventually just forget these things… but wake up and drive to someone’s house, take them to a park and climb a tree, eat skittles, talking about Sesame Street and stickers. Or just go to a beach make a small fire and build a sand castle city with no one there to ruin it and see how big you can get it before the sun comes up – take a million pictures of it then destroy it… These things you will remember. These things are stories worth telling – these are moments worth living – I want to make people understand that. Life’s not JUST about work and fun. Its about moments and memories… So make some already!” Karl Smith
