There seems to be a bit of confusion over what colour field painting is and so I will include here a posting from a discussion held in a Painters in Modern Times forum in support of Carson Collins which came up in relation to a colour field Challenge competition. The works in the challenge were mostly not colour field painting at all. Helen Frankenthaler’s painting are close to what many people think of as colour field painting – the subtle and beautiful layerings of colours that comes with the watercolour medium. Technically and stylistically Helen Frankenthaler was not a colour field painter. Frankenthaler was not a Conceptual or Minimalist artist. True colour field painting is about the formal elements of art –eg. colour and space (space meaning the stretcher itself and the depth from the wall) usually pure abstract and non-representational. / / Colour field as I understand it ‘grew out of’ Rothko’s great works, the beautiful shifting and sliding of colour clouds, deeply spiritual and moving. From Rothko and Barnet Newman followed the destructive and heady theories of Clement Greenberg. He single handedly launched and then murdered Abstract Expressionism with theories that demeaned and intellectualized any emotion or passion involved in the act of creation. Greenberg launched Pollock and Rothko to great heights and then did a back flip which pretty much destroyed the artists. Good thing art critics have no standing now. His theories developed into Conceptual Art and Minimalism and of course were in support of Donald Judd and the theory of “specific objects” which ignored the soul of art and anything connected to the human journey. I am so glad art direction moved back into the hands of the practitioners -the artists. Colour field painting never really had the spiritual heart of a Rothko. Colour field in the context of theorists does not excite the senses, it attempts to remove them! / / Ideas were stolen by the Conceptualists from the great Marcel Duchamp and Dada as well. Duchamp addressed the problem of art as decoration, as something only to be hung on the wall. To combat the problem he placed a urinal in a gallery and called it a ‘readymade’, drawing attention to the fact that pretty much any object you see is designed by an artist somewhere. In the process he also attacked the burgeoning art market exploiting artists for material gain. It annoys me that subsequent artists play with Dada as if it were just something to play with. Postmodernism dares incorrectly to be linked to the great Duchamp, when it is not, in its intent. / / Colour field is from Conceptual Art and Minimalism and it means pure fields of colour, i.e. a canvas painted black or a white on white canvas, totally removing subjectivity and colour that is emotive. Donald Kuspit understood all this and spoke up against Greenberg and his theories. Remodernism from the Stuckists was born; it was also a rejection of the shallowness and impoverishment of original ideas in Postmodernism. The idea of Remodernism was that the great period of Modernism beginning with Cezanne reached a peak with Abstract Expressionism, but the new development had not been fully explored, it was killed before it matured. Remodernism by rejecting formalism encouraged the return of spirituality and passion in art and temporarily stopped the nonsense about art being a purely intellectual and sterile exercise for the theorists. / / I applaud the silent death of art critics such as Clement Greenberg, the art critic who managed to move art away from its public and into a graveyard of elitism and lofty and highly objective theory. Greenberg in support of the Conceptualists and Minimalists gave birth to the monster by placing pure abstraction and formalism at the forefront, destroying figurative art and placing artists at odds with each other. At the same time the great period of Modernism was destroyed before it was thoroughly explored and investigated. The great model of Modernism still stands as the greatest movement in recent art and everything else stands as either a correction or an attempt to restore, revive or destroy it. Mediums have changed with the new media arts, digital arts and the moving image, but only time will tell if a ‘new’ radical revolution can grow from this – a new period as great as Modernism itself. While I was praying early this morning for each of you, as I doe each day, The holy Spirit allowed me to feel a members pain and the lord laid it on my heart to share with you the words that you are about to read. This is for someone here, and I do not know, but the Lord Jesus knows. I pray it will bless all, but especially the one whom God sends it to. [Gods personal message to someone he knows]. Zephaniah 3:17-20 [Common English Bible].The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.” (18) The LORD has promised: Your sorrow has ended, and you can celebrate. (19) I will punish those who mistreat you. I will bring together the lame and the outcasts, then they will be praised, instead of despised, in every country on earth. (20) I will lead you home, and with your own eyes you will see me bless you Then you will be famous everywhere on this earth. I, the LORD, have spoken! 1. As a minister of God, I have often counselled Gods children who have come to me with all sorts of problems and Challenges. One of the challenges that was most common is that they feel guilt and condemnation. / Their thoughts were filled with guilt over what they had done in their past, someone they hurt, something they said or done. One precious child of God would wake up at nights with fear that God was angry with her. Another would feel he was being judged by God because he was always depressed about his past. satan would like all of us to think and feel that way. But you need to understand something. God is Love and he loves you. God has spoken to you today in Zephaniah Ch3. Does that sound like God is angry with you his child. NO!. / One of the strategies satan uses is to get you to feel shame, guild and worthless because of your past. I knew a dear friend who would not pray as they felt God was angry because of the things they did in the past. They would cower and feel so unclean. He said that he knew God had forgiven him, but he still felt shamed and unworthy. Beloved, here Gods minister now as I speak to you under his anointing and in the power of his Holy Spirit. If that is you, and I know someone feels like this or similar, God has something to say to you personally right now. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. When you asked Jesus into your heart / He washed away every sin, every wrong, and you became a brand new person. You became a brand new person. Notice that in 2 Corinthians 5:17, it clearly says that the old things have passed away. God does not see your sins or wrongs, as they have been washed away in the Blood of Jesus. God does not remember them anymore. Jeremiah 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Here God is talking about his children. Now before this was fulfilled, the price for Sin had to be paid in full, before God could forget their sins and wrongs. Jesus Gods son paid tat price in Full. God sees you through the finished work of his son Jesus. He sees the Blood of Jesus applied to your heart. He has forgiven you and does not remember your sinful past. When you received Jesus as saviour, you became a new person. Now you have a new father, and you have the DNA of God. You are brand new. Often satan will try and bring to your thoughts things that you did and then get you to think or focus on them. When he does this just tell him, “I have no sinful past, as the Lord Jesus you thought you could destroy, rose from the dead and his blood paid the price for my forgiveness, and that sacrifice was excepted by God, and the blood has washed away all my sinful past from Gods memory and mine”. Tell satan, you are born again and Jesus lives in you! / There is no need to feel unworthy, shame or guilt. / / 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. / The Blood of Jesus never stops working and is all powerful. Precious friend, See yourself as God sees you. He sees you righteous in the righteousness of Jesus. He sees you as his son/daughter. You have the same father as Jesus. Hallelujah! / There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. [Romans 8:1] / / Colossians 1:12-14 [Amplified Bible] Giving thanks unto the Father, of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has made us meet [Qualified] us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: (13) Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath [translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son]: (14) In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Now you know for sure that God in Christ Jesus has made you worthy to be his child, and that you are forgiven. There is no condemnation to you. You’re a new creation. Hallelujah! No more need to ever feel guilt or shame. You now can come boldly to your Father, knowing he has forgotten your sinful past and welcomes you to his presence as his dear child. Because these pieces are spontaneously created I need to take some time with it before I do the last paint. I’m finding my creativity very hard to handle sometimes. It overwhelms me. The more my art develops, the more pain and pressure it causes me. I’ve pretty much been emotionally all over the place for the last two days. I feel better now because I got it out of my system. But fuck it’s getting hard to deal with sometimes. I feel bad about locking myself up in a studio for two days, ignoring everyone. I am very happy with the creative results but I cant help but wonder what this will lead onto. I read a book the other day on Classic & Romantic art, it was mainly about all he significant artists on the romantic/gothic art movement. I see my own habits, attitudes, and creative obsessions in these guys. At least I don’t feel so on my own. If they survived so will I. So time to sleep. I’m sleeping in the studio tonight, I’m too lazy to go home. I love my studio. I’ve had enough. Another wine and I should be out like a light!
