Hi All, / Today i had some fun with my Camera Club, Pakenham Camera Club . The PCC organised a model shoot for it’s members. / A very special thanks to Roy for allowing the club to use his studio and home, and also for all of Roy’s amazing knowledge and advice! Pakenham Camera Club has a wide range of age groups and expertise amoung these age groups… some die hard film shooters and also the new digital shooters… The camera club caters for all alike and try and encourage all members to partake where possible, if you are near or far and looking for a great club with a bunch of great members… give us a try! Ok back to the images…....I have had a play with the processing to achieve a certain style and i pretty much had this in mind when i shot them, i wanted that film noir, dark and moody dorothy in the wizard of Oz feel to them… Not sure i have got there with what i intended but i am pretty happy with the results all the same! Here are a couple from today!

BY REQUEST Some of you have commented that there is alot that goes on behind the scenes to create our *shoots and that it would be good to open that up so here it is guys / / PHOTO COURTESY OF JARRODB / Depending on the scale of the production, there maybe a little less work. / Some are mini productions with no more than a handfull of photographers, some productions take place in sensitive environs and require specific permits or filming permits; some span over a kilometer and need council permits, so here is a snapshot: / THE THEME: develop concept work over logistics / LOCATION source locations* travel out and size up potential venues prep location or venue reservations when required for pre-shoot rendezvous/check in put signage up where necessary / TALENT talent scout* advertise if needed screen and interview prospective models* auditions for a shoot on location rehearsal with props* (sometimes up to 30 models auditioning for the same production) style the model/s (up to 4 at a time)* model assistant if needed choreograph routines, interchanges & art direction direct hair/ makeup & styling or do it myself / PROPS & EQUIPMENT hire equipment, special effects equip, generators, lights, etc bring in props, sometimes live animals, snakes, dogs. set up fire arenas…can be anything… aerial performance equipment / CREW bring in crew go over plans, logistics & timing security if needed / ADMIN manage correspondence for each event before & after ensure model release forms are in place including any special conditions for either the model or photographer negotiate terms rates etc, special conditions for location write proposals for relevant permits apply for and get permits and approvals for our group to get onto locations appropriate insurance policies (public liability for eg) get legals draughted & detailed pay everyone + bills / ROADIE pick up & drop off equipment manage the set up, lighting, models, timing, changeover, shoot arena set down equipment, props & drops take a break go into dreamtime thenn * DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN & LOVE IT PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A COST DEPENDING ON WHICH PRODUCTION YOU ATTEND THE ADMISSION VARIES. to give you an idea, the cost of each event is defined by the detailing that goes into each one, / There are 4 shoot categories determined by the location, / 1. OPEN SESSION: open location, not limited to numbers, lower admission / 2. LIMITED SESSION: Limited in numbers, midrange admission / 3. EXCLUSIVE SESSION: small numbers, higher admission WHAT HAPPENS TO THE IMAGES FROM THE SHOOTS?* / I use them to promote and market them and in doing so the efforts of all those involved. ARTHOUSE PRODUCTIONS VIDEO MONTAGES ARTHOUSE PRODUCTIONS PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS I actively market images and talent, whichever comes first depending on the opportunity. / I also get private or corporate clients requesting that I produce a certain image. At this point I hire photographers to cover the job, only from those i have worked with prior. so, thats about it in a nutshell.

So I did my first modelshoot today (May 11th, 2008)with me as the photographer. and it was fantastic! / truely amazing how this man (Wilmer, 65 years of age) was enthousiast about everything, and posing wonderfully! / we did a shoot of about two hours and made little over 200 photos! / There was no particular theme, but we did a outdoors’ shoot so that all the inspiration I need… :) we made photos in very different locations, and that had as result that we have a lot of differency… what makes it more interesting of course :) I have already posted two photos of him on my RB… hope you enjoy!

The Modern Model Release Forms This extract from the above linked web page…

The Modern Model Release Forms This extract from the above linked web page is worth reading: “We’ve included a version of the above language in our general Adult and Minor model releases, because Photoshopping has become a normal aspect of advertising photography. But that’s pretty broad language: It allows every conceivable digital effect. Depending on the model’s concerns (and the client’s needs, of course), you may need to accept certain limits on the digital reworking that may be done. For instance, However, this compositing or distortion shall be done only by Photographer or by persons working under the direct supervision of Photographer, and it will be limited to images and image components that are photographed on the same day. If you need the “however” part and you are using a pre-printed release, you can hand-write the extra sentence, and both you and the model can initial and date the change.”

  • Photographers - What are you paying for? (Part 2)
    by Jo O'Brien

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars...

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars, tracing paper makes a great diffuser and a trip to a hardware store will give you very bright lights. Yes, there are downsides, and for the technically perfect photographer, these suggestions will be a very funny joke. The point here is keep and open mind and try new things before forking out $100 for a piece of shiny material that resembles a $5 dash board cover. Unless you use a biscuit tin to take photos, eventually you will want to buy a new camera. Shop around, get advice, try out a friend’s and when you walk into the shop, don’t spend hundreds of dollars on accessories that you wont’ use. It doesn’t hurt to haggle a bit either. When the salesman tries to close the deal, my typical response is “what else are you throwing in?” Studio Hire So the first question you ask yourself is “Do I know anyone who already has a studio set up?” If the answer is yes. Skip the rest of this section, suck up your pride and ask them if you can visit and have a play. The rest of you, ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it the chance to get a professionally lit shot? Maybe you could try a lighting course that will not only give you many opportunities to work with professional lights, but will teach you the theory and science of lighting. Often these courses are much cheaper than a similar amount of time in a rented studio. Do you want to try shooting in more controlled conditions? Try clearing out a room of your house and setting up a few scenes. The results may not be brilliant but it will give you a sense of how much time you can spend setting a shot up before you get to click the button. If you are certain that a proper studio is for you, consider hiring it out through a camera club for a discounted rate, or hiring it out with a couple of other photographers to minimise your expense. Models and TFP Models and photographers have one thing in common – they both need a portfolio of photos to proceed in their career. This is why Time For Photo shoots have become so popular. But before you jump up and down about using a free model take a second think about what is fair and ethical. At the end of the day, both you and the model should be happy with your arrangement. If someone feels short changed, you should consider modifying your approach. This is my rule of thumb. If a model approaches me to take shots for her portfolio, and I am working to her brief, she should pay me. If we have put our heads together to come up with a project and proceed on equal footing where we both use the images, then neither should pay. And if I conceive and art direct the shoot and have priority over the image rights, I should pay the model. Basically whoever comes out on top should be paying the person who is doing them a favor. Then there are test shoots, these are almost always done on a time for photos basis. These shoots are a bit like ‘warm up’ shoots for the model and photographer to see if they want to work together properly. They are also a chance to test new ideas or equipment. Often the images taken in test shoots are less than great, and if they do turn out, they are most commonly shared equally between all parties. If you are requesting a model release form because you intend to profit from the images, in my opinion, the model should be paid or you should have an arrangement to split any profits. My plan of attack is to put out a call for models. Then I will do a test shoot with the model who has contacted me and we either have equal rights to the shots or split them down the middle. If the test shoot goes well we may arrange to work together again. This might mean doing an even split of “her ideas” and “my ideas” for no payment, or it may be paid work if I am contracted to produce shots for a commercial job. Photographers – What are you paying for? (Part One).

Last year I was looking for a nude pregnant model.I had 5 girls lined up for the role but one by one they changed their minds so I gave up on the idea. About 4 months ago I was chatting to an online friend who I discovered she was pregnant! I mentioned I was looking for a pregnant model last year and she thought that would be a great idea. / Well today was the day the the shoot finally came about.I had spent 3 weeks scouting for nice locations to do the shoot. The model 26yrs old and 37 weeks pregnant & no car so I agreed to pick her up drive to the location & take her home. / Well the trip was 116km & about 5 hrs all up. The shoot agreement was a TFCD shoot for my website & I offered the model some websize images with the opportunatey to buy prints if she liked them. After the shoot I got the model to sign my standard release form as any good photographer would do! / She was very pleased with the shoot & was excitied to see the images & spoke of a second shoot when the baby is born. / On the way home The model gets a call from her partner & she tells him what we have just done! This didnt go down too well & it seemed somewhere along the way she didnt mention to him about the style of the shoot. / After I drop her off I get a text message as im driving home that she would like to terminate the agreement & asked me to post it back to her & that she would pay for all the images I had taken of her. / Just as I get home I get a call from her partner telling me he didnt know anything about the shoot and wasnt going to pay for anything. / I tried to explain the agreement we had made & said id email a few sample pics & if they purchased everyone would have something for their time & effort. / About 2 hours later I get a phone call from the ladies father threatening me with legal action claiming I had taken advantage for her in her delicate state & was trying to extort money from her!! / This is where I explained his daughter who was over 18 did not require parental consent & that she has signed a standard model release form!! ( ALWAYS USE A RELEASE FORM FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION) I then tried to explain what I was asking was only fair as its not my business if models discuss details with family. / Now that legal action has been mentioned I will be retaining the release form just in case any action is pursued. / Nigel

Hi everyone looking for your brilliant advice once again. I, like most people, would like to get some fee for my time as a photographer. I have been doing it for several years now, and have a strong enough reputation in my city where people know my business name and my images. I am offering the following rates for models. $200 for a location test shoot, 2 hours, 15 high res edited images. / $350 for a studio test shoot, 3 hours, 20 high res edited images. / (australian dollars, obviously) I have had no response at all to my ads on various websites. Lots of people see them, but they just get ignored. People comment on my images every day saying ‘I want to work with you! Your work is amazing!’ but when it comes time to me saying ‘it will cost this much’, they never respond. And yet whenever I shoot with a model TF*, they tell me stories of how they paid upwards of $1500 for a terrible photographer to take their photos, and they got one print. So what am I doing wrong? Am I charging too much? Too little? What do I need to do to bring in costumers who don’t only want to shoot with me if it’s free? Advice/stories/personal experience is greatly appreciated at this time, as I am about to go into my own studio, and am a little scared I won’t be able to stay there! EDIT: If it’s helpful to know, my rent on the studio is $480/month. which is prett good considering it’s right in the centre of the city.

today your group gave me the honor of being a featured artist. i have to say i choked up at the sight. to take my works from chappel photo and from earhart chappel. showed me so much, as an artist and a woman. / penelope my babe was the first in the feature. my love my reason.to see her on the grass with her fairy wings in delight..took me away.she is my butterfly and i have said for so long she should be free to fly.that pic at the start held such meaning for me. / i do know i submitted the photos, and my chappel photo pics were entered as i could not figure out, the cap on my earhart chappel colab site..i am not good on the computer! / but seeing all the photos grouped today. i picked each one for a reason.but somewhere along the line.instead of showing how i developed as a photographer on rb form the past (soon it will be a year). it showed me more of me looking in at my life over the last year. / from the hotel room when i realized my marriage was falling apart / to nyc rocky start, where the image of musical instruments caught my eye, and when the pic was uploaded there in frame was the reflection of the city..not my plan, just a pic, i took while shopping for a friend. / to costa ricas beauty a place i have always found inner peace and clarity. / to cross to bear where i left alone for a weekend drive in search of finding peace, and found it amongst the graves.(i admit not the most happy sight) but something i obsessed over for my lost weekend. / to angle always at play my p my love my baby blue my everything / these photos show the breakdown of 2 years in my life. each haveing a meaning to me far beyond what is seen. yet i picked them randomly. / the pics i picked form earhart chappel / i can clearly state why for each for my work in hair, make up ,wardrobe ,lighting, editing and photography / 2 are works for a breast cancer series i am working on, and they seemed to fit, as my point for the series is about how it touches all women in one way or another, age race class …we are all women, we all have a fear , a friend, a relative, someone that we know at some point in our lives that it effects. hence the jeans as they are something most of us have and feel comfort in at least one pair.(and i wanted to show strength in women feeling comfortable in their body’s) / screaming snake was a piece with a wonderfully talented model who’s emotions scream in the photos..with screaming snake and in primal scream. / yakusa reclined was for my lighting for the shot , as i was so happy the way it came out. / up in smoke (the series)the use of light effects to shape a mood. and changing model co to be a vintage interview style of shots *(she is wearing a wig in this to turn her into a brunette, i did the same in primal scream a pink wig in that series) / to the photo of slivering snake, where mood and lighting and make up created a wonderful effect on her back / i did hair make up wardrobe for all of them..but i even see here. / from “the hotel room” to the last photos in the feature “slivering back”,to “screaming snake” to “primal scream”, there is a vast difference, the mood of my photos. / looking at them quickly it might look to you i have become “bitter” as clearly seen on the photos without the use of word. / but if you take them a different way. you can see the transition / growth in my works, my attention to detail and doing hair, make up , wardrobe and lights . fav lighting would have to be the up in smoke series i did with model co. fav costume design mother earth and pride series as i starting designing clothing again fav wardrobe would be a tie for my pin up pieces with model co,and the yakusa;s series with kb fav hair. ohh again so hard to choose “fit and feel” + “isis” with extensions, and my period hair designs and punk looks with multi hair pieces at once.hair is soo fun! fav make up! of course the body of the snake/dragon on kb .on her front wrapping around her to the back and then to her shoulder.it took alot of time but was so worth it for me and i think her too! fav series! does no comment i plead the fifth world wide count?i guess not..so to answer and to tell the truth…i have seen what i have done and how i have expanded and grown , but i do not think at this point. that i have a fav series. as i have seen my mistakes, and i sill need to work on them. so i guess i can say with out a doubt i am still in the wip (work in progress) phase… and i have no fav, because of ME, i need to grow and learn more.to be able to create a whole series, with out mistakes. / “up in smoke” if you forced me to say one series. as i feel i excelled at the lighting, hair, make up. but my screw up i feel was wardrobe, my choice for it. and i think with a different outfit would have really punched the mood up even more. fav artist on rb fallen rose media for her fashion ,paul v for his creativity( as he constantly keeps you guessing what will be next) and skill, l koren’s works her style and captures of era’s long past, drink me alice for her support and kind words, and in the way of her being so positive during/handling change, and the group vintage and gorgeous, who’s members constantly inspire me, and of course to “the woman photographer” (as well as the sisterhood).groups that are for women photographers, for their lovely and constant support. and to jo o’brian a model and photographer who amazes me infront of the camera and behind she she puts in 110% every time in both.i am trying to cut down here.so i will end on a note such as this red bubble and its community of artists, as signing in is like a breath of fresh air, allowing me to be positive and to feel good. you all have pulled my esteem up so far, and so high from where it was to where it is today and i thank you, all of you on rb for that, you have been as an outlet of sorts for me through my art.., rb is place in this world i feel free.thank you. / sincerely / tara chappel / www.redbubble.com/people/earhertchappel / www.redbubble.com/people/chappelphoto / i am a wip (work in progress) for now.but not for long! / with all of your support, i believe in myself, and my talent now thanks to all of you wonderful red bubbler’s!
