Ideally you will be… / prepared to give it a go and try something different or even a bit unflattering based in Melbourne, Australia look completely normal or utterly unusual or anything in between accept red wine, love and photos as currency I take my responsibility as a photographer seriously. Prior to a shoot I will talk to you about my ideas, what I want you to do, how I want you and the whole image to look and discuss different options. I aim to create an art piece that best utilizes your particular look and attitude whatever that may be. If you don’t look like a typical model, brilliant. I do not shoot underage models without a parent in attendance and encourage all models to bring a chaperon or friend to shoots. I always encourage models to leave their mobile phones switched on, take regular breaks, tell someone where we will be shooting and when they can be expected home. I provide examples of my work, and models I have worked with previously will happily attest to my not being a scam artist or psycho. If you’d like to give it a go and have a bit of fun, drop me a email to mail@joobrien.com.au EDIT>> June 2008… Yes, this post was made last year but I am still keen to hear from prospective models :)

Be open minded about your camera gear You can make a tripod for only a few dollars, tracing paper makes a great diffuser and a trip to a hardware store will give you very bright lights. Yes, there are downsides, and for the technically perfect photographer, these suggestions will be a very funny joke. The point here is keep and open mind and try new things before forking out $100 for a piece of shiny material that resembles a $5 dash board cover. Unless you use a biscuit tin to take photos, eventually you will want to buy a new camera. Shop around, get advice, try out a friend’s and when you walk into the shop, don’t spend hundreds of dollars on accessories that you wont’ use. It doesn’t hurt to haggle a bit either. When the salesman tries to close the deal, my typical response is “what else are you throwing in?” Studio Hire So the first question you ask yourself is “Do I know anyone who already has a studio set up?” If the answer is yes. Skip the rest of this section, suck up your pride and ask them if you can visit and have a play. The rest of you, ask yourself what you are paying for. Is it the chance to get a professionally lit shot? Maybe you could try a lighting course that will not only give you many opportunities to work with professional lights, but will teach you the theory and science of lighting. Often these courses are much cheaper than a similar amount of time in a rented studio. Do you want to try shooting in more controlled conditions? Try clearing out a room of your house and setting up a few scenes. The results may not be brilliant but it will give you a sense of how much time you can spend setting a shot up before you get to click the button. If you are certain that a proper studio is for you, consider hiring it out through a camera club for a discounted rate, or hiring it out with a couple of other photographers to minimise your expense. Models and TFP Models and photographers have one thing in common – they both need a portfolio of photos to proceed in their career. This is why Time For Photo shoots have become so popular. But before you jump up and down about using a free model take a second think about what is fair and ethical. At the end of the day, both you and the model should be happy with your arrangement. If someone feels short changed, you should consider modifying your approach. This is my rule of thumb. If a model approaches me to take shots for her portfolio, and I am working to her brief, she should pay me. If we have put our heads together to come up with a project and proceed on equal footing where we both use the images, then neither should pay. And if I conceive and art direct the shoot and have priority over the image rights, I should pay the model. Basically whoever comes out on top should be paying the person who is doing them a favor. Then there are test shoots, these are almost always done on a time for photos basis. These shoots are a bit like ‘warm up’ shoots for the model and photographer to see if they want to work together properly. They are also a chance to test new ideas or equipment. Often the images taken in test shoots are less than great, and if they do turn out, they are most commonly shared equally between all parties. If you are requesting a model release form because you intend to profit from the images, in my opinion, the model should be paid or you should have an arrangement to split any profits. My plan of attack is to put out a call for models. Then I will do a test shoot with the model who has contacted me and we either have equal rights to the shots or split them down the middle. If the test shoot goes well we may arrange to work together again. This might mean doing an even split of “her ideas” and “my ideas” for no payment, or it may be paid work if I am contracted to produce shots for a commercial job. Photographers – What are you paying for? (Part One).

Okay that would be me! I was asked and very reluctantly took the job for posing for some shots for a medical technology company named “Oasis”. No…I’m not putting a pregnancy test in my mouth although I kept laughing as I was being photographed because it sure looked like one. / Actually it’s a saliva collector! Really cool. It’s a new way of collecting saliva in the medical industry, quickly easily and safely. The shots are being used on a medical website. / Anyway…it’s kind of an odd thing for me as I do not model or anything but hey if random jobs come up that pay money, I’m in! ;D Just sharing my weird venture into the many projects I’ve been involved in lately. ...although it’s not the weirdest job lately….I actually had a request from a gentleman who tried some of my homeade beef strogonoff, that if I could make him a batch a month he would pay me. / Of course I’m going to cause that’s a great story to tell future kids…”at one point I was actually making stroganoff and modeling with pregnancy tests in my mouth!!”... ??? ;D “Will work for food….” apparently I “Will make food for food!” LOL! XOXO

I just got back from a photshoot with one of the artists from my work. We had suggested to him that he use more ‘normal’ looking models and somehow Sharon and I volunteered to be photographed for his work in a spur of the moment kind of way- and he took us up on it. He was a great guy, very professional and VERY creative. I’m just dying to see the finished product. He had this massive set of wings made from peacock feathers- SO impressive looking. I had wing-lust. We got a few different sets of things. A predator/prey type set, a draping across furniture set, a bundled into a ball on the floor set and an embracing set. It’s been a long time since I was in front of the camera- I’d forgotten how much fun it is. Gotta love being the centre of attention for a couple of hours and getting to play a role and be a character. The drama student in me has had a great morning. There was only one down side- I got home and couldn’t look through all the shots that had been taken. I knew there was a reason I prefered taking the shots to being in them. I’ll just have to exercize some patience!

BY REQUEST Some of you have commented that there is alot that goes on behind the scenes to create our *shoots and that it would be good to open that up so here it is guys / / PHOTO COURTESY OF JARRODB / Depending on the scale of the production, there maybe a little less work. / Some are mini productions with no more than a handfull of photographers, some productions take place in sensitive environs and require specific permits or filming permits; some span over a kilometer and need council permits, so here is a snapshot: / THE THEME: develop concept work over logistics / LOCATION source locations* travel out and size up potential venues prep location or venue reservations when required for pre-shoot rendezvous/check in put signage up where necessary / TALENT talent scout* advertise if needed screen and interview prospective models* auditions for a shoot on location rehearsal with props* (sometimes up to 30 models auditioning for the same production) style the model/s (up to 4 at a time)* model assistant if needed choreograph routines, interchanges & art direction direct hair/ makeup & styling or do it myself / PROPS & EQUIPMENT hire equipment, special effects equip, generators, lights, etc bring in props, sometimes live animals, snakes, dogs. set up fire arenas…can be anything… aerial performance equipment / CREW bring in crew go over plans, logistics & timing security if needed / ADMIN manage correspondence for each event before & after ensure model release forms are in place including any special conditions for either the model or photographer negotiate terms rates etc, special conditions for location write proposals for relevant permits apply for and get permits and approvals for our group to get onto locations appropriate insurance policies (public liability for eg) get legals draughted & detailed pay everyone + bills / ROADIE pick up & drop off equipment manage the set up, lighting, models, timing, changeover, shoot arena set down equipment, props & drops take a break go into dreamtime thenn * DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN & LOVE IT PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS A COST DEPENDING ON WHICH PRODUCTION YOU ATTEND THE ADMISSION VARIES. to give you an idea, the cost of each event is defined by the detailing that goes into each one, / There are 4 shoot categories determined by the location, / 1. OPEN SESSION: open location, not limited to numbers, lower admission / 2. LIMITED SESSION: Limited in numbers, midrange admission / 3. EXCLUSIVE SESSION: small numbers, higher admission WHAT HAPPENS TO THE IMAGES FROM THE SHOOTS?* / I use them to promote and market them and in doing so the efforts of all those involved. ARTHOUSE PRODUCTIONS VIDEO MONTAGES ARTHOUSE PRODUCTIONS PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITIONS I actively market images and talent, whichever comes first depending on the opportunity. / I also get private or corporate clients requesting that I produce a certain image. At this point I hire photographers to cover the job, only from those i have worked with prior. so, thats about it in a nutshell.

Hi everyone looking for your brilliant advice once again. I, like most people, would like to get some fee for my time as a photographer. I have been doing it for several years now, and have a strong enough reputation in my city where people know my business name and my images. I am offering the following rates for models. $200 for a location test shoot, 2 hours, 15 high res edited images. / $350 for a studio test shoot, 3 hours, 20 high res edited images. / (australian dollars, obviously) I have had no response at all to my ads on various websites. Lots of people see them, but they just get ignored. People comment on my images every day saying ‘I want to work with you! Your work is amazing!’ but when it comes time to me saying ‘it will cost this much’, they never respond. And yet whenever I shoot with a model TF*, they tell me stories of how they paid upwards of $1500 for a terrible photographer to take their photos, and they got one print. So what am I doing wrong? Am I charging too much? Too little? What do I need to do to bring in costumers who don’t only want to shoot with me if it’s free? Advice/stories/personal experience is greatly appreciated at this time, as I am about to go into my own studio, and am a little scared I won’t be able to stay there! EDIT: If it’s helpful to know, my rent on the studio is $480/month. which is prett good considering it’s right in the centre of the city.

This series of pictures was shot during the Summer of 2006. During that Summer I was going a little nuts with the amount of shoots I was doing. I think I did 18 shoots that Summer. / I’d never shot at Mooney’s Bay before. I’d always wanted to but just never found the right person to work with. I’d also been looking forward to shooting with Tania for what seemed like years! So now with the perfect location and the perfect model I was set! / I’m always blessed with the best weather when I shoot. I can’t even shoot in the rain if I planned it! I have had a few more models to add to my Halloween t-shirts collection along with Jacqueline [aka Venus], who modeled my Vampire Smile shirt so wonderfully. A few weeks back, Trena [aka cougarfan] posted some pics to her RB account showing off Mike-o-Lantern along with some pretty freaky paranormal activity that went on during the shoot. Check it out: Then today, NooneSpecial, uploaded some precious pics of a cute, adorable little one modeling my Batty-Bat [1st variant]! I want to thank both of these fantastic Bubblers for the great shots and for their wonderful support!!! I know they already know how much I appreciate it, but I wanted to really express it!!! FABULOUS PHOTOS, DARLINGS!!!!!! Be sure to stop by their profiles and check out all of their great stuff too!!! Much love to you all!!! Now I am going to go carve a pumpkin! Woooo-hoooo! :) Cheers! ~ Brian :) / ...infinite x’s & o’s…

I would like to ask if anyone out there would be interested in doing some collaborated work. If you are a photographer, photo manipulator or illustrator, then I have had an idea to produce some work under the title “collaborations” with other artists. This could be pictures of models, places, ideas for images. Please drop me a bubblemail if anyone is interested

Well life at this is great, tomorrow is my husbands and I first wedding anniversary. Can’t believe a year has gone by so quick. WOW!!! I love him even more then I did the day we married. Our son Raven whom we named our business after will be in September. He is very close to walking. He is growing and learning so quick. / We are getting our business cards printed and they should be done very soon. So we will be able to spread our name out more. We did a photo shoot, last Thursday and it turned out great, had a fun time and the model loved us. So that is always good news. / We are hoping to get more experience and build up our portfolio. There are so many ideas to do, that it is hard to keep them all organized. It gets very overwhelmed but still very exciting. Well I guess that is it for now. Keep you wonderful and talented artists posted.

My brother’s signed me up for another job shooting alongside him, this time for a somewhat high-profile fashion/modelling event. The shoot is on Sunday, and I’m quite frankly terrified. I’m a homebody. I spend 90% of my time in my apartment, dressed in baggy jeans and huge jumpers. I deal with cats, and objects, and flowers, and sunsets. People are a whole new ballpark for me, especially ones whose careers depend on what I do behind the camera, and who are professionally beautiful. Is this a self-esteem issue? Yes, in great part. I’m not so confident about myself: as a photographer first, but also as a person and a woman. And being surrounded by beautiful women will be a challenge to that as much as to my artistry with the camera. How to talk, socially; how to direct them into poses and expressions – these are things I fear as much as anything else. We’ll see how it goes, anyway. Listening to bold, sexy French music can’t hurt to boost my spirits beforehand! So here’s some for you guys: Emilie Simon – Fleur de Saison Alizée – Moi… Lolita Enjoy!
