June 2007 I’m on a roll with mixed mediums! This one is a mix of calico, hessian, shellac, paints, string… I have tried to capture the essence and textures of Africa… It smells like Africa funny enough, could be attributed to the sage burning at the time of creation. Look out for the symbols… Table Mountain, Tribal Patterns, The bushveld, animals and animal totems. x Carmen

/ “Solitude” is part of the Chinese Brush Painting Series.. Watercolour and Inks on Rice Paper… I originally painted this on white paper, but I thought it was too bland so I masked the image and painted the paper in an ombre effect with watercolour…it wrinkles a lot as it dries, and I like the effect, so I have not mounted the painting, but left it as you see it. For some years I lived on the 19th floor of a council estate tower block, and as expected got to meet and know quite well some of the others living there…. / The diversity of characters there, and (how they lived) was something I’d always wanted to portray in a more iconic way than I might usually (although painting at this size, I had to wait until I was living in a bigger place first). This a mixed media on board. I first did collaging, ( I used one of my woodcut prints to make her dress) then acrylics, and finished up with oil painting. The model is Bellmusker . / Bell is a writer on redbubble and took a self portrait photograph of herself so that I could paint her sleeping in a landscape. Psychedelic states are an array of experiences elicited by sensory deprivation as well as by psychedelic substances. I have to give credit to my DD for drawing the mouth for this piece. (She is 10 years old) I was having issues with it, she came into my studio, and asked if she could do it for me. God bless her sweet little heart. I left it just as it was! :) Abstract painting created using several photographic layers, added textures, Photoshop, Painter X and a Wacom tablet. There are several ways to express happiness, pain or other emotions in art. An artist I know said “Every artist paints or draws at least one clown in their career”. Why do you as the viewer suppose this is true? Personally, I think it is. Why? – because it is a way to express the pain or joy we all feel in any given time in our lives. / As many of the portraits of clowns in times past, an illustration of the personal frustration with the circumstances we all face in our lives reflects in this work.
