Johanna
by Janis Zroback/ *Homage to Ce…
/ Homage to Cezanne Vincent van Gogh died in 1890. Theo van Gogh, art dealer and brother of Vincent, died six months later, in 1891. Johanna, Theo’s wife, inherited all the shop remainders including virtually all of Vincent’s work. She soon moved with her small son from Paris to Bussum near Amsterdam. Johanna, age 29, went into distribution mode. / / Reading the brothers’ correspondence, she became convinced of her brother-in-law’s genius and set about to do the right thing by him. “I am living wholly with Theo and Vincent,” she wrote in her diary, “Oh, the infinitely delicate, tender and loving quality of that relationship.” Placing work in various commercial galleries in the Netherlands, she also arranged for the gifting of works to strategic museums. It was hard going at first—people laughed at Vincent’s work. The critics were skeptical at best, but in the end her writings and her persistent, visionary advocacy fanned the Vincent flames. She typed and revised the Theo-Vincent letters, finally publishing many of them in Dutch in 1914. When she died in 1925, she was still working on letter 526. Johanna also assisted in publishing a handbook for detecting Vincent forgeries. / / Cheese and Fruit / In the “all’s well that ends well” story of artists’ lives and successes, there are worthwhile prerequisites. Some artists try some of them so the fruits of their labour can be enjoyed while their creators are still walking around. Vincent, who never saw a guilder from his art, had benefit of all five of the prerequisites: / / Distinctive, recognizable style / Limited supply (200, plus drawings) / Controlled distribution (one caring person in charge) / Story (failure, poverty, passion, health issues, ear-off) / Tragic, preferably early, end (shot himself) / / Dinner Tonight / A shot of nepotism helps too. The van Goghs and the Bongers (Johanna’s maiden name) were educated, professional, well connected and upwardly mobile. Vincent was the black sheep. It was Vincent’s publisher-uncle C. M. van Gogh who was first in print with Vincent’s story. Another uncle designed the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Johanna was herself a sensitive, literate yet practical type who spoke and wrote beautifully in three languages. After thirty years of hard work, she finally and graciously consented to allow England’s National Gallery to buy Vincent’s “Sunflowers.” / / “Everything is but a dream!” (Johanna van Gogh, 1891) / / It may take bereavement, another generation, or a canny dealer to see preciousness and perhaps value in a body of work. The combination of hoarding and distribution is part of the art. Work should not be too readily released or made commonly available to just anyone. Stratospheric prices come after the groundwork is laid. After that, as in the National Gallery, “Sunflowers” are now made available on mugs, calendars, shirts and brassieres. Theo and Vincent now lie side by side in the cemetery at Auvers-sur-Oise. If those two idealists hear about those mugs, they’ll be rotisserating in their graves. / / Figs Pears and Nuts / The above is an excerpt from one my letters from Robert Genn, a well known and very successful Canadian painter, who provides an art listing site called The Painters Keys…he has given me permission to reprint his letters for you whenever I feel you’d be interested in the topic under discussion. Janis Does your work contain some of the prerequisites for success? Not suicide of course!!!

Chinese Brush Painting- How To Part 1- Overview

I’m sure you have noticed the change of pace in my art work in the last few days…I have added some Oriental work in ink on paper….some peaceful landscapes in the typical Chinese style of free brush painting in black ink, with touches of colour, where I felt it was needed. Chinese painting is part of a 3000 year old culture, and in experimenting with these works, I had to throw out what I know about western style painting, and start to think about painting in a more linear way. These are absolutely my first paintings in this style. I decided I wanted to paint as much as I could in the traditional way, and so I learned to grind my own ink, had stamps carved with my name in Chinese and set to work. It was hard at first to come to terms with the idea that once you put the brush to paper, that was it…no drawing first, no erasing or changing the mark in any way. However, I was thrilled to be able to stop thinking about western style perspective, and get on with mountains and rocks which have always been my favourite subject matter. Once I had mastered the techniques, the whole experience was very enjoyable, and from time to time I return to it, as a break from my usual style of work….it is a real feeling of freedom from western style restrictions in landscape painting, and I love that. It is as much about what you decide to include as what you decide to omit. If you are interested in learning more about this fascinating art I can continue to add to this journal….there are a few basic techniques, you will need to know before you start creating your own works of art…..how to grind ink [not really necessary], but fun. What materials to use, how to paint in the Chinese way etc…additionally, you may just want to learn how to use inks on rice paper in order to create work that’s not necessarily in the Chinese style.. However I will only continue if there is sufficient interest….by clicking on the painting below, you will be linked to my website, and illustrations of tools you will need. Unexpected Blessings...
by Janis ZrobackDear Janis, _On Thursday morning I was at my easel when a courier appeared / at the door. He was delivering an envelope from a friend,...
Dear Janis, On Thursday morning I was at my easel when a courier appeared / at the door. He was delivering an envelope from a friend, a / local lawyer of my acquaintance. The letter stated that in 1974 / I had brought some of my work to his office, and a recent / bookeeping search revealed he had never paid me for them. / Lorne’s note was filled with contrition and guilt. “How much do / I owe you?” he asked. “Do I owe you a ton for arrears? Do I pay / you the current market value? What about the money you would / have earned on the money you should have had for the / paintings?” As I was contemplating these thoughts a $10,000 / “down-payment” cheque fluttered from the envelope. Thinking back those thirty-odd years, I vaguely recalled the / delivery. More recently I had noticed two paintings in his / office when I’d been getting his help in transferring some / property. I had thought nothing of the earlier transaction, / took it for granted that he owned the paintings, and only noted / their need for cleaning. / / Poppies / Over the phone, Lorne and I had a good laugh. I put his mind at / ease by disclosing my own sloppy billing and sieve-like mind. / Carol Ann and I looked over our ancient records and came up / with nada. A subsequent visit to Lorne’s office found four, not / two paintings. I measured them, determined their probable cost / when new, ran them by my current price list, cut that in half, / and he cut me a cheque. I’m now in the process of cleaning and / reframing them for free. As I was removing three decades of lawyer-office-cigar from the / surfaces, I was thinking of Samuel Johnson’s remark, “We need / to keep our friendships in constant repair.” Deeper than this, / I thought, there’s a sort of Karma and integrity that / mystically guides the creative life. You might say it’s one of / our unexpected blessings. Every one of us has such a story. / People respect artists and look out for them. The surprising / and singular finding of my lifetime has been the value of / friends and the sense of trust that builds between them. This / includes not only collectors, but fellow artists, dealers, / agents and curious observers. Sometimes I think friendships are / even more important than the art. “Life is human / relationships,” said the wise man from the East. By sharing our / creative magic with others we reap the magic of their / friendship. Best regards, Robert PS: “Friendship multiplies blessings and minimizes misfortunes; / it is a unique remedy against adversity and it soothes the / soul.” (Baltasar Gracian) / The Harbinger 4 Esoterica: That’s not to say humour and passive amusement do / not play a part in friendships. Among artists and their patrons / I notice a mild form of banter. Perhaps it’s some sort of / jealousy that lies beneath both surfaces—something to do with / the fragility of the human condition and the fickle mystery of / art. George Bernard Shaw wrote a note to Winston Churchill: “I / am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; / bring a friend… if you have one.” To which Churchill replied, / “Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second… if / there is one.” / / Soft Afternoon…Lake of the Woods by Robert Genn..app $21,325.00 The above is a copy of one my letters from Robert Genn, a well known and very successful Canadian painter, who provides an art listing site called The Painters Keys…he has given me permission to reprint his letters for you whenever I feel you’d be interested in the topic under discussion. Janis Are the friendships more important than the art? What do you think?

Chinese Brush Painting- How To Part 2-Tools of the Trade

As I start to write this entry, for some reason, the sound of “We are the Champions” by Queen is running around in my head…why? I have no idea. Unless it means that all RedBubblers are champions? So “my friends” I write on regardless of the “earworms” To paint in the Chinese way, you will need the “Four Treasures” paper [zhi], brushes [bi], inksticks [mo] and ink stones [yan]....I am not Chinese, so I hope I got the spelling right. You can also use bottled permanent ink, but I have a real fondness for the traditional ink stick, [more about ink later] plus it is much blacker, and has the authentic look of an Oriental painting. I must stress at this point, that the materials are extremely inexpensive, [read cheap] and thank goodness, as no other brushes will work….put away the watercolour brushes and buy only Chinese brushes…Japanese brushes will not work either. / The brushes, paper and ink will cost just a few dollars, especially if you go to a Chinese art supply shop….failing that, your regular art supply shop should stock them as well. A word or two about paper, which though it’s commonly called “rice paper”, is mostly made from bamboo pulp…you can get it with some sizing, which helps to control the ink, but why not throw caution to the winds and buy it unsized, which is what I used in all my paintings. / It may be a little frustrating to use at first, but you might discover as I did, that loss of control of paint can be a good thing, leading to hitherto unimagined heights of creativity. The brush is of paramount importance…everything depends on it….some of those available today were the same ones used in the Ming Dynasty [1368-1664] / Get three….purists will say you need only one….just don’t tell them what I said….. a soft goat or sheep hair, usually white, for broad washes, a harder brush, dark brown, for you got it, those all important calligraphy lines, and maybe a third with a blend of both kind of hairs. / I personally went mad and bought a whole bunch as I was intoxicated with the prices and thought somebody had made a dreadful mistake, and put the wrong numbers on. / I am so used to spending several hundred dollars on only one watercolour brush, that a brush for just a few dollars seemed unbelievable… Now I can hear you saying “goat”? Just the hair folks..just the hair….nobody died. / Remember this is traditional Chinese brush painting, and a synthetic brush cannot produce the same results….only natural fibers can provide the resilience and hold liquids long enough for the long and varied strokes that are so essential to the genre….. also the firm brushes will spring back easily and make the thinnest of lines, and at those prices you can afford to get the very best the shop has to offer. Look after your brushes…they will come with glue on the bristles, and after you’ve washed that off, do not recap…always wash them after use and do not let them stand in water…. Clicking on the painting below will lead you to my website and pictures of the tools you will require to try this fascinating art. The Tide Pool by Janis Zroback :

Problems with Clones...

Dear Janis, / / These days artists are receiving emails like this: “We like to do business with you. We are skilled painters in Shenzhen, China. There are lots of talent painters working together in our studio. We can paint oil painting at every grade of different style, our price and service are very competitive, you can make more money than before if you buy oil paintings directly from us. The FOB prices can be $7 per copy for 20” x 24” and $12 for 24” x 36”, if you are interested in, we can send some photos of our works to you, we also can paint exactly according to your any email pictures, it is very easy to do the international business now, looking forward to your reply.” / Mutsu Carnival As well as cheap copies of famous paintings for the world’s supermarkets, what these chaps have in mind is that you go golfing while they make your stuff—at less cost than you might normally pay for a couple of golf balls. They’d like you to think it’s the new reality of free trade. / The Group of Five / / I’ve seen a few fairly good copies of my own work, done without my permission. At first glance they look okay. At second glance the painters haven’t figured out the order I do things, and they’ve not rendered well the deviations and mannerisms that make my work somewhat distinctive. As clever as these guys are, they’ve not lived my struggles, and they’ve put in unpleasant struggles of their own. Can others see this? People tell me they can recognize my work from across the room. Many other painters can say the same. How sophisticated does a collector have to be to spot a phony? How greedy does a dealer have to get to sell one? How stupid do artists have to be to let themselves be cloned? / / / Jazz As many know, I’ve worked long and hard to thwart the Chinese copyists. A couple of years ago we managed to have replicas of more than 1200 Western painters removed from Eastern clone-sites. The various levels of governments were of no help in this fight. Direct email appeals to the decency of the cloners worked, if only temporarily. These are talented, well-trained painters. Our efforts brought to mind some of the great principles: Put the devil to work in your work. Fill it with private magic. Use techniques and processes that are yours alone and tough to master. Do things that others can’t. / / Best regards, / / Robert / / PS: “We can do good job for you and save you time.” (Chinese cloning website) / / In China, the word “copyright” currently means the right to copy. We need to help the Chinese understand that world citizenship means more than a fast buck-it means respect, honour and integrity. There are more than 10,000 clone-painters in Shenzhen-all of them poorly paid. Artists need to reply to these Chinese emails and let it be known that they do not want their work cloned under any circumstances. Chinese artists need to be encouraged to be their own artists. Many have seen this light and have achieved international acclaim at prices that do not perpetuate poverty in either art or ethics. The above is a copy of one my letters from Robert Genn, a well known and very successful Canadian painter, who provides an art listing site called The Painters Keys…he has given me permission to reprint his letters for you whenever I feel you’d be interested in the topic under discussion. / / I too have had a number of these emails, which means my work has now been cloned and is being sold as I write this, with not a penny sent to me..I tried to find them on the web, but the sites are so big [there are thousands and thousand of paintings] that I gave up. Janis Are you worried about your art being cloned, and have any of you received emails like the ones I’ve received? / Picture of a cloning factory at work...There are regular competitions held, with 100 or more painters all racing to see who can finish a copy of the same portrait or landscape the fastest. The quickest of the Dafen, Shenzhen artisans can complete up to 30 paintings a day. Over 10,000 Chinese painters occupy the city of Dafen, Shenzhen. Five million oil paintings a year are created here for foreign markets. P.S. According to Robert, one of the main sites is called Arch-World. / Andrew and I went to have a look right away. It turned out to be a big site that ‘represented’ more than 2800 artists, living and dead. These folks have been simply ‘lifting’ images from dealer and public gallery websites, and other online pages. They are offering them as giclees or photocopies in several sizes. You can fill up your shopping-cart for peanuts. Smaller sizes are 129 Yuan—379 for larger. That’s about US$16 and $46. They also frame and ship.

The Look...and how to get it?

“It’s a curious subject that’s seldom discussed and surprisingly poorly understood. The idealists and the practical are at odds about it, but it’s really neither good nor bad—it just is. I’m talking about “the look” in popular art. Art is a commodity joined at the hip to an artist’s name. That the name is recognized from the work is both its beauty and its curse. / Night-A Blaze of Glory Here’s one example out of thousands. Mark Rothko’s work is pretty well universally known. Anyone with a smattering of interest or knowledge can pick one out from across a crowded MOMA. Both curators and commoners use words like “soft-edged,” “repetitious,” “simple,” “ethereal,” and “consistent,” to describe Rothko’s work. That’s what people know about Rothko. On the other hand, figurative and exploratory work by him is hardly known and seldom collected. Rothko is not just a painting that looks like what a Rothko should look like, it’s a brand, and like the wealthy woman who needs a Louis Vuitton purse, well-endowed galleries feel the need to have a Mark Rothko. / Night Time in Baba’s Garden The condition isn’t limited to the herd-instinct of Public Galleries. That little gallery down highway 101 in Humptulips also plays a role in branding the look. Joe Schmaltz’s landscapes need to look like other Joe Schmaltz landscapes. Your local art-collecting orthodontist needs to have seen something like it before. It takes a mighty evolved orthodontist to seek out the more unusual Schmaltzes. Evolved orthodontists are as rare as perfectly straight teeth. / Chintz Night Whether they admit it or not, both the lofty curator and the modest collector see work as a product and have finite expectations for it. Going beyond those expectations upsets their understanding of the particular brand they’re looking at. So much for an artist’s versatility, varied skills, complex abilities and eternal exploration. Problems arise when one artist appropriates the look of another artist. If the look is simple to produce, and many looks are, multiple galleries can become glutted. Overproduction of a look leads to devaluation. Such is the circular nature of looks”..... The above is a direct quote from the pages of a newsletter by Robert Genn, one of Canada’s most accomplished painters, who is also well known internationally and who also runs The Painters Keys, an international listing site for artists…. / In the Summertime This is a subject that I have personally puzzled and pondered over for years…do I want an interesting life, or if I slog away and paint the same thing everyday of life, a possibly famous and lucrative one….I opted for interesting Janis… What do you think? Are you hoping to be the next Mark Rothko recognizable for a single style of work, or are you content with leading an interesting and varied life exploring all the styles and subject matter that the world offers the artist? I’m interested in your feedback on this topic….I think it’s a really important question for artists who are serious about making a living at their art.
