The Dark came barefoot and his footprints would be seen vanishing into the mist. The Dark sang in the leaves of the trees and creaked in their branches. He gazed upon her from the moon and softly kissed her hair while he played with fingers of wind with their curls. Great woods, you frighten me like cathedrals; / You roar like the organ; and in our cursed hearts, / Rooms of endless mourning where old death-rattles sound, / Respond the echoes of your De profundis. I hate you, Ocean! your bounding and your tumult, / My mind finds them within itself; that bitter laugh / Of the vanquished man, full of sobs and insults, / I hear it in the immense laughter of the sea. How I would like you, Night! without those stars / Whose light speaks a language I know! / For I seek emptiness, darkness, and nudity! But the darkness is itself a canvas / Upon which live, springing from my eyes by thousands, / Beings with understanding looks, who have vanished. A poem by C. Baudelaire, a frenchman, a madman and a genius. I have hardly been as satisfied with my work as with this one. I had just part of the idea when I started, and gathered a lot of stock from both artists. And then it just came, piece by piece. I think Baudelaire and their stock served as the greatest inspiration. Also, a funny fact: I was really sick while making this, and yet I was working so hard and inspiration just took flight. The last thing I never thought adding and yet I did and I am damn glad I did, was the hooded wonderer. Is that Death? Or just some mysterious stranger? We shall never know.
