For the last year or longer, I have been dabbling in HDRI High Dynamic Range Imaging (or so I thought). I have been reading articles, bought all the proper software (Photoshop CS3 Extended and Photomatrix which were both good choices). I have been autobracketing my photos (I started with 3 photos, 1 EV (stop) apart and then moved up to 5 photos 1 EV apart.) I use a tripod, lock my mirror, and use a remote to trigger my camera. I shot all my photos in RAW, which starts you out with a higher dynamic range. So far so good. However, yesterday, I got the long awaited book that I preordered (before production) “The HDRI Handbook” by Christian Bloch, hot off the press (it can be ordered through Amazon.com). I couldn’t put the book down. I have been reading it in all my spare time. It has a lot of technical aspects in the beginning, but without that portion, you miss out on a lot of incredible information. Now here is where some true HDRI photographers are going to be snickering. I am going to list some of my mistakes so that others don’t take the same dumb path I took on their way to HDRI. Mistake #1. When I autobracketed my shots, I used Aperture mode (OK go ahead and laugh HDRIers). So for all 5 shots, the depth of field changed. This is crucial, you must be in Tv (shutter) mode to bracket your shots. If your camera doesn’t have an autobracket system, you have to do it all manually. / Mistake #2. I should have had 2 EV (stops) between shots instead of one. Mistake #3. I should have locked the focus or switched to manual focus. Mistake #4 On a couple of occasions I took 1 RAW image and processed it 5 ways and then ran it thru Photomatrix. Hmmmm. This is similar to dumping a pint of water into a gallon container and calling it a gallon. You don’t end up with a HDRI. Mistake #5 OK, I switch back and forth between Photomatrix and CS3 extended to see which gives the best image (that is ok, because it varies between programs and images). My big mistake….. I tone mapped the HRDI right away instead of saving the original in a 32 bit format. I also should have edited it in CS3 Extended in the 32 bit format. So, I now have a 8 bit image (I actually did save some as 16 bit image), that shows up great on the Internet. Except for the fact, that my HDRI’s didn’t look as good as others. (See here for an example) So all of this I have learned up to page 126 of the book (less than half way thru). I will keep you posted as I restart my journey into HDRI. And to all of you that have been doing it right, my hats off to you. I am just getting into the “how to”part of the book and have a long way to go. Many people might say, who cares, I am not going to be doing HDRI. Think again. The pixel race is over and the camera manufacturers got smart. The race for HDR is on, and just around the corner.

Do not mistake my kindness as 'softness'

Thanks to dogpriest for the title….... Many people struggle with the word ‘kindness’. / Many people feel that ‘kind’ people can be walked over, abused, hurt and treated badly. Why? Well, because they are ‘kind’ and they will not mind. They will forgive, as always, and still see the good behind the words and actions. ‘Kind’ people are seen as ‘soft’ and are often encouraged to ‘toughen up’. / Well…...in my experience, ‘kind’ people are not always born that way. Experience makes us that way – often bad experiences and a lot of pain, hurt and trauma. / I’m tired of being seen as ‘too soft’ and ‘too nice’, professionally, – to me there is no such thing. I have had enough pain, fighting and hurt in my life…now…I just want peace…and I just want to be…..me….....and let other people be…them…. / I don’t think I’m asking for too much. / Please read this and, the next time you think someone is being ‘too soft’ – look beyond the ‘kind’ face, listen beyond the words you hear and really feel… / you might find that you see them differently….and you might then understand where their compassion comes from. Kindness Before you know what kindness really is / you must lose things, / feel the future dissolve in a moment / like salt in a weakened broth. / What you held in your hand, / what you counted and carefully saved, / all this must go so you know / how desolate the landscape can be / between the regions of kindness. / How you ride and ride / thinking the bus will never stop, / the passengers eating maize and chicken / will stare out the window forever. Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness, / you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho / lies dead by the side of the road. / You must see how this could be you, / how he too was someone / who journeyed through the night / with plans and the simple breath / that kept him alive. Before you know kindness / as the deepest thing inside, / you must know sorrow / as the other deepest thing. / You must wake up with sorrow. / You must speak to it till your voice / catches the thread of all sorrows / and you see the size of the cloth. / Then it is only kindness / that makes sense anymore, / only kindness that ties your shoes / and sends you out into the day / to mail letters and purchase bread, / only kindness that raises its head / from the crowd of the world to say / it is I you have been looking for, / and then goes with you every where / like a shadow or a friend. Hello, I’m the moderator of a new group called “Do Over”. It is for those shots that you wish you could get another chance at, the image is technically really good but has a few MAJOR flaws. A place where we can laugh about our goof-ups and maybe learn from our mistakes. What would you do differently if you could re-take the shot again? Postings would be images like this (for instance): / When I rode past this site, each horse was standing underneath each arch and facing me. It would have been perfect. I turned around, parked my motorcycle, switched lenses, checked settings and got ready to shoot. After about an hour of waiting for the shot I really wanted (horses facing me), this is the best I could come up with !!! Not sure what I could have done differently, maybe carry some carrots along next time? So, why don’t you also join and let’s see some of your not so perfect work? The one you wish you could take again? Andy

Please do not make the same mistake I made

Some months ago I purchased an external harddrive for my laptop, in order to backup my important data including most of my digital images. Then, to cut a few steps from my post processing steps, I started working on my images directly from the external backup drive. Now I cannot access this 4 month old drive, get various different errors and cannot access my data. I’m extremely sad over the 1200 images I took during my recent trip to Europe to see my family. Although I have not given up on retrieving this data somehow, please do not make the same mistake I did. If you are using a harddrive to backup your data, you may want to buy another one to backup the backup onto. I’m very very sad over this, thought I would vent and hope this does not happen to you.

Hey Guys, / Received my first batch of cards from RB today (2 of my own and 6 from you guys!!!) They are STUNNING quality-very happy with that. BUT…..... / On 3 of the cards (2 of mine, 1 of kookylane’s) whatever border we have used at the time has screwed up the measurements for printing, leaving either uneven borders or one border on one side and not another. HMMMMM. / My Mum and I were actually discussing this the other nite- how these sorts of pics looked in the preview section before buying. She said that some of her pics looked ok and some were right OFF. Had a look at some of my stuff and agreed with her, hence my last blog entry (getting rid of certain borders on prints for perfect look/printing outcome). No worries, you might say… / I think for anyone to just assume their work will fit perfectly and print perfectly once uploaded to RB should really FULLY CHECK how each piece looks in checkout before posting your pic/artwork/etc. I STUPIDLY assumed evrything would be aok….. / Here’s hoping you can learn from my mistake!!! :) (YOU MIGHT WANT TO GO CHECK SOME OF YOUR WORK GUYS….) Imagine if you’re a customer looking at it-even worse, buying 20 of your cards, wait weeks for postage, then receive them looking all BODGY. Bad for you, Bad for customer, Bad for RB!!! / Anyway, the cards are for Me so no huge drama. Just thought I’d drop you a line…..And again, gorgeous quality cards-Ta RB!!! / Bel :)

Mistake of the Wild Hunt
by wytheThe bats arrive and are funny and gray We have to reorder the bats
Festive, furious – the Wild Hunt (Wylde Hunt, etc.) was this ill-jammin party ancient poetic German ghosts had on Easter Day to celebrate the syzygy of the planets. This poem asks the question: What if this whole cycle of eating and not-eating interfered with that jammin-ill earth party?
