I’m so excited ! I received notice today that a very talented artist here on Redbubble bought a copy of “Cloud Mist Tea ” as a card today. And I’m just so excited & over the moon ! Thank you so much Joan…. you made my day hon !!! hugs And I talked to my daughter Desiree today, who is doing well in her job & as a matter of fact, just got a promotion. Which we’re all happy about. So to celebrate….though not really…. she went to the hairdresser’s & had her hair done, re-styled. She had 10 inches cut off & donated it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides wigs to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under the age of age 18. These children have lost their hair due to cancer or to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. Being able to face the world proudly is a simple thing we take for granted, but for these kids, the gift of hair can be a gift beyond measure. You can read about it here, at their web site. Locks of Love Again…. thank you so much for buying “Cloud Mist Tea” Joan !!! hugs

  • Making Fog/Mist in Photoshop

You may want to add some atmosphere to an image in the form of fog/mist and we can do this quite easily in Photoshop. First I’d like to thank MARK GERMAN for letting me use his Silence Lane image in this tutorial. If you don’t have an image to try this tutorial out on, you will have to contact Mark to ask his permission to use it. Here is our start image Our image with one application of fog/mist And I added another layer of fo/mist because I wanted to cover the bottom right of the image a little more. A larger view of the finished image is available HERE So lets get started. Open your image, duplicate and close the original. I want you to click on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette, or you can go to the top menu bar and go Layer>New>Layer, or press Ctrl+Shift+n. Making sure the new layer is active and that your foreground/background colours are set to the default of black/white (press d on the keyboard if they aren’t, or if white is the f/ground and black the b/ground, press x on the keyboard) go to the filter menu in the top tool bar and choose Render>Clouds. In this tutorial I have applied Render>Clouds once, if you would like some variation on this press Ctrl+f on the keyboard to repeat but you will also notice that the clouds appear differently each time. To get some rather different effects, instead of pressing Ctrl+f – press Ctrl+Alt+f ....... try it and see :-) So now we’re going to give the clouds a little blur. Go to Filter>Blur>Motion Blur and you can set the same amounts as I have in the image below. Most of what you do from now on will vary according to each image, and what it is you are trying to achieve. At the bottom of the layers palette you will see a little icon with FX on it, 2nd from left, I want you to click on that and choose Blending Options from the menu – alternatively you can go to the top menu bar and choose Layer>LayerStyle>Blending Options – and a dialogue box will appear like the one in the image below, I’ve highlighted the part of the dialogue box that we will be using next – ‘Blend If’ Make sure that ‘Blend If’ in the highlighted red area is set to gray. You’ll notice that the sliders have a triangle at each end (black and white) we will be concentrating on the black end, so don’t worry about the white slider. You’ll also notice that the triangle shape has a small white area in the middle of the slider, this is so that we can split the slider, which we are going to do now. Hold down the alt key (option for mac) and put your cursor to the right of the white area then click and drag the slider, it should now have split into a half triangle. Looking at the image below, move this half of the traingle to 125, then come back and move the left part of the half triangle to 25. When you’ve done that, click ok. Now I want you to press Ctrl+t on the keyboard to bring up the Transform tool, or you can go to Edit>Transform>Scale – you will have to decide at this point where you want the fog/mist to be and bring the top down accordingly, as I’ve done in the next image. What you will have to do next is throw in a gradient to take away the harsh transition. Making sure your f/ground and b/ground are set to the default, select the gradient tool and on the top menu bar make sure that black to transparent is selected. You need to do the gradient from the top to the bottom, BUT not from the top of the image, from above the harsh line of the clouds layer. You may have to do this more than once, just keep trying until you get a nice transition. In the image below I did the gradient 4 times till I got it how I wanted it. I then took the opacity of the layer down to 70%. I then duplicated the clouds layer by dragging it to the create a new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette and with that layer selected I grabbed my move tool from the side menu bar and moved it up until it was were I wanted it. Now I have a harsh transition at the bottom of this clouds layer, so do the same as above except start at the bottom of the harsh line and work upwards with your gradient. A bit of practice will make this a very simple task. I changed the opacity of this clouds layer to 60%. The image below shows the final work, which btw is different from the image at the top of this tutorial because I couldn’t remember what I had done LOL :-) And the larger image HERE Remember that all of these steps can be used in various ways on different images, not just to create fog/mist and they can be adapted to create the type of fog/mist you want – it is the process that is important.

Thanks everyone for your interest in my where’s dinghy / and dinghy’s here images which I posted last night. I had just realised that the odd rainbow around my head’s shadow (which moved with me as I took several shots, downhill into fog with a low morning sun behind me) was possibly an optical phenomenon called brocken spectre glory tho it looked more like a like a halo (and I’m not a bit saintly!!). The atmospheric optics group have accepted the image which the wonderful photographer Ern Mainka confirms is a faint version of a brocken spectre glory … now look at his tremendous example of the real thing in full colour below (which makes me feel very humble indeed) entilted:- Brocken Spectre and Glory by Ern Mainka (press image for link to his page with fascinating details) Thanks all for your lovely comments, interest and support. The rest of Erns gallery is just amazing too! / cheers / dinger PS Winner of where’s dinghy virtual prize competition goes to …..(drum roll)... / 1st prize: EdgeOfReality who nailed it ! well done Edgie! :)))) 2nd : Sean Farragher pipped at the post 3rd : Rosina Lamberti a whisker behind… Well done all and hope you like your (virtual) prizes! ding / :)))))

WELLOILBEAMUNKEEZUNKL! 13-08-08 I have just discovered that after months and months with many rejections one of my submissions to the onexposure.net photography site has been accepted and published. They are a tough site to get into and really stretch your patience, tolerance and love of all things European but they DO make you put much more thought and work into your photography that’s for sure. It feels like a real milestone has been reached for me. This is the one that made it: Into the Mist #2 Enjoy! GB / Dennis

Hi everyone! I have 2 more images to go in my Mists of Avalon Series….but I can’t find the background image that I want! Does anyone have a snow image that they would be willing to let me use? It needs to be fairly desolate (It will be called Shattered Dreams) with not a lot going on in the image. There can be water, a lake, mountain, whatever but I need a lot of snow at the front of the image. It can be landscape or portrait…and it needs to be large. Help, please?!

I was up at 5-30am well almost, hit the snooze button a couple of times and got up just before 6-00am…..hehehe!! I crept out the house and drove about 10 minutes away to my favourite spot for sunrise, Langstone Harbour. As usual the tide was out and it wasn’t looking too good, cloudy and misty but not cold. I waited leaning against the sea wall outside the pub, drank my coffee as I watched the birds come to life and start rooting around in the mud for their breakfast…. as I’m pretty new to the bird watching thing, most of them are just birds especially in the dawn light as hard to see any details. I have book and will look and learn LOL. Anyway the sun came up …behind the clouds…....there was a gap and the sun briefly shone whispers of warm sunshine and golden light on the water, boats and birds…......then it was gone….....ah well another sunrise done, maybe a few shots from the brief display of the sun…....and for the first time I actually tried my hand at wrting a poem…....we shall see…...... in due course

Am I crazy, or just enthusiastic? When I awoke this morning, a mist lay over the land. I always find the mist intriguing as everything is shrouded and outlines are blurred. You can never tell how long the mist may last and so I grabbed my camera and took off for some shots. Before breakfast. Before a cuppa. Before feeding the cats and the dog – only the horse was fed and the fire lit. At least I would come back to a warm room. Frank who usually accompanies me on these walks stayed at home – perhaps he was still hoping breakfast would magically appear. So it was just Fred and I walking through wet grass, climbing up slippery rocks and dodging prickle bushes as I searched out suitable subjects for my photo shots. Not even the usual number of birds were sitting atop the pipeline; a lone pigeon was all there was to be seen. Time will tell as to whether or not the effort was productive. I have to wait until the film is finished and processed before that is known. But I do know that I am glad I didn’t waste this opportunity. Who knows what may come out of it…..

I’m chuffed to bits at making my first sale on here of a laminated print. The picture is question was taken on a gorgeous misty morning last October. It was as quiet and serine as it appears on the photo apart from the sound of geese every so often coming back from their travels overseas. You couldn’t see them because of the mist and is was a bit spooky! The mist just hung over the sea, and I’ve never seen the sea so still! I was very pleased when I checked out the pictures on the computer at home. Thanks to the buyer!
