  • Comfort Dolls
    by John Douglas

    US$3.99–US$91.20

My Auntie Jean makes time every day, knitting jumpers and beanies for children orphaned by AIDS in Malawi. This is part of a voluntary global knitting initiative, which has been underway since 2006. / As each child is dealing with grief along with physical hardship, with each jumper and beanie a small “comfort doll” is added. To date some 16 000 jumpers, beanies and comfort dolls have been made and sent to orphaned babies in Malawi, and 630 000 worldwide. / The shipping to Africa and distribution are co-ordinated through a small charity called Australian AIDS Fund, though the knitting project is a separate entity. Any proceeds from the sale of my Comfort Dolls photo will be sent directly to Auntie Jean to help finance her wool purchases. / / (public domain image – Malawi knitting project)

  • Muro de los Desaparecidos, Santiago. This is part of a wall on which are engraved the names of hundreds of detained and “disappeared” opponents of the Pinochet regime. There are a lot of names. To give some idea of the scale here’s another section of the wall with a person in shot: /

  • The Place of the Skull
    by John Douglas

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Life-sized plastic figurines in a Christian theme-park, Argentina. Calvary (Golgotha) is the English-language name given to the site, outside of Ancient Jerusalem’s early 1st century walls, ascribed to Jesus’ alleged crucifixion. Although the significance of the name is lost to modernity, Calvariae Locus in Latin, Κρανιου Τοπος (Kraniou Topos) in Greek, and Gûlgaltâ in Aramaic all denote ‘place of [the] skull.’ Although usage since the sixth century has been to designate Calvary as a mountain, the Gospels call it merely a “place.” The word “calvary” is only found in the King James Version of the English Bible in Luke 23:33. The word “calvary” is not from the original Greek versions, but is a gloss from the Latin Vulgate. / ( Wikipedia )

  • Light at the End?
    by John Douglas

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Looking down magnet tubing of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Protons will be fired nearly at the speed of light and collide at detector points such as the 25m high, 7000 tonnes ATLAS (pic below). / / Straddling the Franco-Swiss border, the tunnel housing the LHC is 27 km in circumference, making it the largest particle collider in the world. / Confirmation of the existence, or absence, of the Higgs particle, identification of extra dimensions and investigation of antimatter are among the highly anticipated results of the particle collisions. But no one really knows what’s going to happen. / To keep the magnets functioning, they are cooled to -271.3°C, colder than the temperature of space between galaxies. Final stages of cooling are currently taking place and the LHC is expected to begin firing within a month or two. / Scientists at CERN were the inventors of the internet; www.CERN.ch was the first website to exist on the web. Update: Well, here we are, the world hasn’t ended. Onwards and upwards for the advancement of knowledge – yipppeee!

  • Proper Sick
    by John Douglas

    US$3.99–US$28.50

Clinic sign, aboriginal community in Cape York, Australia. / This community thankfully has a thriving arts centre which generates additional funds. / Even so, the lack of money means no doctor, a temporary nurse at best. Diseased dogs with their insides half out wander the streets, domestic violence is rampant and the suicide method of choice is by hanging. / Which does make me wonder, does this qualify as “proper sick AND bleeding”?
