  • / / / image title – the inner sanctum Manic Reflections . . . One day i awakened to a simply sweet, “I heart you!” message on my bathroom mirror. Days later, a bi-polar/manic/sleep-deprived version of me impulsively grabbed my camera, tripod, trusty remote and started striking poses in my mirror. Wishing to immortalize the i heart you message, in some way, before zapping it with Mr. Windex! So . . . i crouched up on my counter, gradually getting closer and closer to the mirror. It was wonderfully strange, surreal and comical – as i carefully attempted to seat myself in the bathroom sink . . . while the rest of me perched perilously on the bathroom counter. Purging my manic energy, creatively, provided me with a sense of relief and surrender. After this series was photographed, i went on to photograph two more, in my studio. It was after the photographing of the three, separate series – that i was finally able to slip toward slumber. So what follows are manic reflections . . . partake and enjoy :) / image title – another version of me / image title – the sensual realm / image title – the chameleon / image title – the mirror speaks / image title – fragile / image title – the confrontation / image title – inward bound Bi-polarities . . . Around 18 it started to sink in that something not-quite-right was going on in my frantic mind. As I was always struggling to pay attention in school . . . i also became aware that i would get these incredible highs, feeling euphoric, invincible, on top of the world – no matter what my actual reality was . . . everything was grandiose! These manic episodes usually lasted about 2 weeks, followed by the worst lows which often lasted months. In a depressive state everything was life and death, everyday problems became overwhelming, i just wanted to crawl into a quiet, dark corner and simply cease to exist. Then there were those inbetween states where i guess i would be what was considered “normal” though to me these inbetween states felt like emotional flat-lining, i felt kind of numb – being so used to the extreme emotions i felt most of the time. When i was younger, my manic episodes were amazing, accompanied by feelings of invincibility, euphoria and pseudo-bliss. I would feel on top of the world! Now, these manic episodes are more dark and frenetic in nature. And i find myself craving the sleep these manic episodes deprive me of. It’s hard to stay on schedule/task when i go day, after day – without sleep. I don’t have more energy when i am manic, i am just more hyper and restless, unable to slow down – which creates the illusion of high energy . . . inside my body and mind are crying out for sleep. It would take another 12 years before i learned how to manage these intense moodswings, learned to go with the flow and how to keep my head above water – no matter what my mood. There were years of self-destructive coping methods and soul numbing medications. Eventually i decided to approach my bi-polarity from a spiritual/holistic perspective. I decided to go vegan and stopped consuming foods loaded with additives/preservatives. I learned about behavioral management, structure, meditation/yoga, prayer, daily spiritual renewal and daily exercise. Putting all of these things into practice, over time . . . allowed me to utilize my moods creatively AND constructively. beingnormalisoverrated JAEDA! / /

The Mirror I look in the mirror And what do I see? A strange looking person That cannot be me. For I am much younger And not nearly so fat As that face in the mirror I am looking at. / Oh, where are the mirrors That I used to know Like the ones which were made Thirty years ago? Now all things have changed And I’m sure you’ll agree Mirrors are not as good As they used to be. So never be concerned If the wrinkles appear For one thing I’ve learned Which is very clear: Should your complexion Be less than perfection, It is really the mirror That needs correction

  • Create A Mirror Image Effect In Photoshop

Now this can just be a whole lot of fun doing this effect, or you can take it seriously and do something contructive with it :) Take a look at the comparison image and what I’ve done to that poor Juvenile Crimson Rosella :) Probably one of the simplest effects do as well. A couple of things before we get started. It doesn’t matter what size the image may be, there will be no need to adjust any of the settings. It might be useful to use an image where the subject is a little off center. As you’ll see with the image you might like to practise on below, it isn’t essential – but you’ll soon be able to judge which images to use. so, lets get on with it. You can use the image below to practise on if you, click through for the larger image. copyright is mine etc., Open the image in Photoshop, then duplicate the b/ground layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard, or dragging the layer to the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Click on the eyeball next to the b/ground layer to hide it. Next go to the top tool bar and Click on View and make sure that ‘Snap” has a tick next to it. See image below. Go back to the ‘View’ menu in the top tool bar and click on ‘New Guide’ – a small dialogue box will appear – punch in the numbers that I have below. The guide will be placed at the exact vertical center of the image. If you ever want to find the exact centre of one of your images – go ahead and run the new guide again, but change vertical to horizontal. Where the 2 guides intersect will be the exact centre of your image. Select the move tool by pressing V on the keyboard, or going to the side tool bar and selecting it. Whether you move the image left or right at this point will be entirely up to you. I’m going to move the image to the right , then I’ll show you a screenshot with the same image moved to the left. Once you have done that, select the rectagular marquee tool from the side tool bar and select the right hand side of the image – see image below – then press Ctrl + J on the keyboard to put the selection on its own layer. Immediately after putting the selection on its own layer, press Ctrl + T on the keyboard to bring up the Transform Tool. Move the small rotation point in the middle of the image to the vertical guide, it should snap to it when it gets close. See image below. Then go to Eit>Transform>Flip Horizontal. Press the Enter key on the keyboard to accept the transformation, then go to View>Clear Guides. And that is all there is to it. You can go through the image and see if there is any tidying up that needs doing. The first image below is straight after creating the mirror image, the second is after some fixing up. The third shot is the exact same technique, but with the mirror effect done the opposite way, and not fixed. Have fun.

Refreshment… that is a large part of what the bubble is for me… from the inspirational artwork i look forward to laying my eyes upon each day, to the amazing support, comments & encouragement from fellow bubblers… there is always something here that makes me smile :) Today it was all about the people… The lovely Pip Gerrard still had my mind engaged with the wonderful journal she posted last night when, Zing! A bubblemail tip off that i’d been made a featured artist in International Superheroes of Drawing, Illustration and World Domination ... & she was kind enough to send me a link to the forum post where i discovered i have the wonderful Anita to thank for the honour… she truly is an International superheroe of drawing!!! Thankyou so much Anita, i’m stoked …big hugs!!! / And depending on your feelings about journals, you can thank or blame Anita for inspiring those too!!! / Not to mention the fabulous Journal Junkies girls, Barbara Glatzeder & Moonspiral who always put a smile on my face :) Then i found that my good friend Karin Taylor a constant inspiration, had posted a Buyer Booth photo of my work with the sweetest things to say… i swear there’s no cash for comment going on here! And then, to top it all off the amzingly talented & sweet Steph Granshaw posted Baby Blue My first look at this gorgeous piece she is so kindly contributing to the Mirrors, a charity event supporting the Butterfly Foundation & promoting positive Body Image & something i’m proud to be involved in the running of. I will be posting a full journal on the Mirrors Exhibition shortly… i have been so touched by the willingness of several other bubblers(you know who you are :)) to donate work to the event, without this sort of generosity from artists here on RB & in the broader community this event would not be possible… full details & big thankyou’s are on their way very soon!!! As soon as i make some inroads into my own paninting for the event! But for today, big thankyou’s to all the bubblers mentioned above… you made me smile & the red dust storm & 2.5 hours stuck on a train pale in significance. X x x

Expressing, transforming and clarifying the shades of limelight that frame our body image !http://images-1.redbubble.net/img/art/bor…

Expressing, transforming and clarifying the shades of limelight that frame our body image My friend and fellow bubbler Sarah O’Rourke is part of the team co-ordinating the Mirrors Charity Art Exhibition along with Rhiannon Bulley, which is being held from the 15th to 24th October 2009 at the Mori Gallery, 168 Day Street, Darling Harbour, Sydney, the opening night is 14th October 6-8pm. The red bubble members, along with myself, who are donating art works to the Mirrors Exhibition are as follows (in no particular order): Sarah O’Rourke / Cynthia Lund Torroll / aWarr / Bec Winnel / Caitlin Shearer / Steph Granshaw / Remus Grecu / Mimi Yoon Here is a recent article which lends more of an insight into the exhibition and it’s founder Rhiannon Bulley in which I’ve had my own work Lost and Found featured, and I’d like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Rhiannon for featuring my work on both blogs. I am donating my framed original painting of Hidden Treasure pictured above with the chook to the exhibition The event also has the support of medical groups, including the Centre for Eating and Dieting Disorders, the Eating Disorders Association (Qld) and The Butterfly Foundation, to whom all funds from sales will be donated. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Sarah and Rhiannon and all the other artists involved the very best in the exhibition and I hope it’s a huge success.

  • Mirrors: A Charity Exhibition: "Beauty... not just an image, it's a feeling"

Next week will see the opening of Mirrors, an art exhibition that’s about more than just pretty pictures on a gallery wall… / Supporting Melbourne based charity The Butterfly Foundation it seeks to raise funds & awareness surrounding the complex issues of Eating Disorders & Body Image. In a broader sense, it’s also very much about Expression though art & how powerful a platform art can be… whether that be through personal expression or in creating art that conveys a message or inspires others. Please visit the blog to read more about the aims Mirrors seeks to reflect. Many of you will know i’ve been heavily involved in putting together this exhibition, alongside founding Director, Rhiannon Bulley. / A large part of that has been selecting artists whose work somehow spoke to the issues we were dealing with… In the most part, artists who convey strong, positive images of beauty, inside & out. The support of artists here on Red Bubble has been phenomenal, with works coming from right around the globe… i am so grateful & i know i speak for all involved in Mirrors. Gracing the walls of the Mori Gallery will be: Karin Taylor / Karin has so generously donated the framed original of her inspirational painting, Hidden Treasure. / Cynthia Lund Torroll / A print of Cia’s latest beautiful work, And The Day Came is in the air on it’s way to Sydney as we speak! / Bec Winnel / Bec has so kindly sent us one of her sublime feminine portraits, a framed original yet to be revealed! Below is her latest stunner on RB, Silk Cocoon / Caitlin Shearer / Caitlin has created a stunning new painting especially for Mirrors, you’ll have to wait to see that one, in the meantime, Immaculate , is just that! / “Steph Granshaw”: http://www.redbubble.com/people/stephg / Stephs gorgeous drawing Baby Blue landed in my hands all the way from Thailand just yesterday & is being beautifullly framed as we speak! / Mimi Yoon / Who is rushing a print of her gorgeous work, wear me wear you all the way from the U.S to Sydney, right as we speak! / AWarr / AWarr’s Beautiful Anonymous series caught my attention the moment i saw it, seemingly speaking right to the heart of one aspect of what Mirrors is all about, a new BA piece has been created especially for Mirrors, BA- Weightless is a hint at it’s direction. / Remus Grecu / Remus created 3 paintings for an award-winning Anti Anorexia campaign in Europe & has very kindly allowed us to display prints of the series as well as the video you can view here / A special mention to the lovely Pip Gerard whose journal alerted me to Remus’ work. So this is a MASSIVE thankyou to all of the amazing artists here who have so generously supported this project, it means such a great deal to me. There are also a number of other artists from right around Australia donating work, as well as submissions from the public & a number of pieces from in-hospital Art Therapy programs. For those of you in the Sydney region Mirrors opens this Wednesday, 14th October 6-8PM at: / Mori Gallery / 168 Day St / Darling Harbour / If you can’t make it to the opening night, don’t worry there is plenty of time, with the exhibtion running from the 15th-26th October. The issues Mirrors looks at affect all of our lives one way or another… whether it be as directly as in personal experience or that of friends or family… or from a distance in a more general sense. / We’d love you to invite friends & family & it’s easily done here I also just need to add one more little thankyou to Karin for kindly posting about Mirrors last week… Between co-ordinating the exhibition & finishing my own painting for it, my intention to post this much earlier was a little way-laid! / There were also a small number of you whom i know really would have loved to contribute but for one reason or another were unable to. I appreciate the in principle support many of you have expressed to me privately just as much :) Hope to see some of you at Mori on Wednesday!!! Xxx Sarah Opening Night / Photo Gallery

  • Mirror Lock-up - what it is & when to use it

It sounds really iffy and risky, but it’s really quite simple. Do you use an SLR? When you look through the viewfinder, the image you see is courtesy of a mirror. When you press the shutter, the mirror has to firstly swivel up out of the way of the light path before the sensor captures the light coming through the lens – this action you see as a dark flash in the viewfinder immediately after pressing the shutter release. When the mirror moves out of the way it slightly vibrates the camera. Not much, but more than the act of pressing the shutter release. If you are taking a fast shot, this vibration, along with the vibration of pressing the shutter, doesn’t factor. But for a long exposure it will reduce your clarity. So, for the shutter release, we can use a remote release to avoid that vibration. And for the mirror swivel vibration we can use mirror lock-up. How does it work? When “enabled” – usually as a Custom Function, you take a photograph by pressing the remote shutter release twice. First press and the camera goes “kerplunk!” as the mirror swivels out of the way. Second press and you hear a small “click” as the shutter opens, along with the red light appearing on the back of the camera indicating the shutter is open. Not all digital SLRs have mirror lock-up as an option, and it is hard to do a search to create a list of the ones which do. However, as far as I can tell, the Canon EOS 20Da, released in 2005, was the first Canon digital SLR to offer it, and hence if you have a later model, eg 30D, 40D etc, they should all have it. If you don’t have a remote shutter release, but rely on the self-timer, it seems the mirror lock-up will only work with a 2 second delay on some Canon digital SLRs, not 10 seconds. This is the case for certain at least with the Canon EOS 500D (aka Rebel T1i or Kiss Digital X3) Further reading here and here. Cheers

  • Mirrors: A Charity Art Exhibition: Opening Night...
    by Sarah ORourke

“Beauty is not just an image, it’s a feeling” *Wedne…

“Beauty is not just an image, it’s a feeling” Wednesday night saw the opening of the Mirrors Art Exhibtion, a charity event to benefit The Butterfly foundation, raising funds & awareness surrounding the complex issues of Eating Disorders & Body Image through Art. / The Gold framed mirror that nearly wasn’t… I found this frame in a council clean-up… & a friend had a 3m wall mounted Mirror he was desperate to get rid of… perfect for the event! Until the glass cutter wouldn’t go through as it was hardened glass! So i purchased a new piece, it was delivered with glue still wet just in time! / / You can read the full text written on the Mirror here As many of you will already know, alongside the events founder, Rhiannon Bulley, i’ve been involved in the organisation of the exhibition this year & was blessed with the support of several artists right here on the Bubble. / They included: Karin Taylor Cynthia Lund Torroll Bec Winnel Caitlin Shearer Steph Granshaw Mimi Yoon AWarr Remus Grecu Despite being supported by cool fashion & art mag Yen, no-one seemed to be too concerned with being “fashionably late”, in fact there were people sticky beaking from 5PM onwards… the show wasn’t billed to open until 6! It was a diverse crowd that flowed through the doors… From trendy young things to Mums with toddlers, Sharply dressed men who knew more than a thing or two about art to teenage boys who to my great surprise were incredibly interested in both the art & the issues. The several “creative spaces”, aimed at encouraging personal expression were warmly embraced… / / The Drawing Table / / Communal Canvasses… / / In progess… / / Finished!... Until the next person picks up the paintbrush! I started off the night managing the payment desk until my Dad kindly relieved me when a flood of people i knew arrived… I never made it back to the table… everytime i turned around there was another artist or friend, an opportunity to elaborate on an artwork & the creative force behind it, or a new face to meet… i would say the crowd more than tripled last years attendance, where i was merely someone who submitted a painting, & as part of the team this year, I couldn’t have been happier with the turn out… / / Serious Art Critics? / / Sisters / / Sisters 2: The little one & the adopted one Aside from the number & mix of people there, what made the night a success was the feeling amongst the crowd… And it wasn’t just the champagne & cupcakes… nor solely the wonderful art on the walls… people were genuinely interested in seeing such heavy issues cast in a different light… Books by artist Cindy Wider & Author whom herself beat Anorexia, Melinda Hutchings were donated to be raffled… / we had to enlist my Dad to get the attention of the chattering crowd… / / ...Although the serious concentration of the pair at the creative writing table in the foreground was unbreakable!... / / ...Rhiannon rewarded my Dad’s crowd control skills by drawing out his winning ticket! Whilst the seriouness of a deadly illness such as Anorexia can’t, & shouldn’t, be diluted in any way… the pervading feeling was one of hope… that where maybe the conventional wisdom is failing so many… perhaps there is another way. / No better example of this was found in a friend of a friend… A mother whose Daughter’s Best Friend has been battling Anorexia & is currently being treated in hospital for the 3rd time in the last 9 months… she relayed the all too familiar heartache of a family who feel helpless, & a girl who feels she lost her Best Friend… Despite her obvious sadness & concern for this young girl, her face lit up as she excitedly explained that this young girl was herself a talented artist… her work featured in Art Express, despite her illness preventing her from completing her HSC… and just maybe something in Mirrors, or the concept of the event itself, just might reach her. The hope was that she might be well enough to visit on day release… But where there is a will there is a way… if she can’t come to Mirrors then i may take Mirrors to her… whilst i can’t very well carry paintings in to the hospital, i can take photos… & hopefully a little of the feeling it’s all inspired. This dresser was the centrepiece of a shoot by photographer Louise Whelan / / _An old friend who worked for my Dad when i was a kid, Lou & i caught up a few months ago… / / ...The dresser & the concept for her shoot were already in motion before i even mentioned The Mirrors Exhibtion… / / ...It was naturally perfect for the exhibition… sweet synchronicity once again! Next week, once Mirrors begins to wind down i will be posting a complete photo gallery of as many works as possible, including the work of all my wonderful Bubblers, & a bit of a wrap on sales, funds raised & a few other little surprises! / The one sneak peek i can give you is at my own piece for the exhibition, What If I’m A Mermeaid… and in an unexpected twist, last week we discovered that Nature Colours Beauty my painting from last year, whilst paid for in full, was never picked up… fortunately it was quickly sold once again! Although i have already expressed my gratitude, both publicly & privately, to all of the Red Bubble artists involved i cannot rave about the success of the night without mentioning once more just how grateful i am… when i began seeking artists for this project i must admit there was some nervous hesitation, i am not one to ask for help or favours generally… But my belief in the Mirrors concept & cause overrode that & i’m so thankful it did… Not only for the benefit of the exhibition but it began what have turned into some very special friendships… there’s the power of art for you right there. / Yet i’m still amazed at the willingness & support i & the exhibition have received, especially since posting this journal in the lead up to the event… & in hindsight it would seem that a great number of you would have loved to be involved… & we’d have loved to have you… so although this years exhibition is still hanging on the walls, whilst it’s fresh in mind, if you’re interested in being involved in Mirrors in some way in the future, please leave me a comment here or drop me a bmail & i’ll compile a little list for reference when we begin planning for next year. Thankyou all for your love, support & encouragement, / Xxx Sarah / The Lead up / Photo Gallery

A massive thankyou to everyone who voted in the Coloured Pencil Art group’s Blue Challenge i was shocked & stoked to discover Girl & The Sea won & is subsequently now the group avatar & featured! I’m so thrilled, this group is home to some of the most phenomenal art on RB!!! And a great big thankyou to the gorgeous Tammy of Journal Junkies fame for featuring not only What If I’m A Mermaid, but also Inspired Mermaids which, uh, features her too! / She is also currently enjoying a real life feature on the walls of Sydney’s Mori Gallery as part of the Mirrors Art Exhibition, a charity event raising awareness of Eating Disorders & Body Image with all sales benefitting the Butterfly Foundation... You can read all about the opening night & all of the other bubblers involved here . I’ve often wondered how blue came to be thought of as a colour of sadness… It’s certainly not the feeling i get from it at all!!!! Xxx

  • / Bramble Rainbowtree / Tiny and Isabella / Affirmation / Binda / Blue Pools / Lost and Found A friend and fellow bubbler gottheshot wrote me with a great suggestion for doing half coloured in images to show the before and after effects. As a child, he recalled having a book which had the images only half coloured and it came with a little mirror, so you placed the mirror in the centre, and could see the rest of the image coloured in, like magic… thank you very much gottheshot as you can see, I’ve been having a bit of a play around doing this, and added each of these images to the actual artwork now, all thanx to you! ps my work is not symmetrical, so these aren’t exactly halves, but it would be fun to get a little mirror and try this out, and i’m going to do that shortly, lol

With the Mirrors Exhibition now all wound up i can finally bring you the much promised photo gallery!!! / If you missed the earlier posts & are sitting there scratching your head, read all about Mirrors, the philosophy, the benefitting charity & all of the Red Bubble artists involved here / And i’m mostly going to let the images do the talking here, so if you missed the wrap on the opening night, have a little look over here before coming back for a wander through the gallery / With not only the work of our generous bubblers gracing the walls of Sydney’s Mori gallery… but also the vast majority of other work shown in the Exhibition… Essentially this is Mirrors: RB Style! At this stage we’re still counting the coins, but it looks as though the funds raised for the Butterfly Foundation will be substantially above last years total.
