See that little notch to the right of the peak in the middle of the ridge? That is Forester Pass and the course that the Pacific Crest Trail takes to get over this range. I was standing on top of it several hours before I took the picture and comprehending it all, the snow and forest that I had just walked through, the river flowing at my feet that was born in the course of my passage, the worlds that had shifted in the place of just a few short hours, I was flabbergasted. It is difficult at times to remember how local our surroundings are, how quickly they can change into something completely and totally unfamiliar.

Mired in darkness, seeing only the stark reality of their existence, seeking pleasures in dark places, worshipping the dark stars, amid confusion and nonsense that only they seem to understand, unaware of the beauty and wonder that surrounds, within their grasp if they were only to reach out and claim it, they are mired in the darkness, the muck and the clay, knowing tomorrow will be the same as today. (It must be getting late, I’m getting philosophical, lol.)

Lioness crossing a small bog in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania. She went after a herd of zebras along with 3 other lionesses. After 30 minutes of stalking one of them messed up and scared away the zebras before the rest could set up the ambush.
