  • Last week I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to snorkel with Dwarf Minke Whales at Lighthouse Bommie on the Great Barrier Reef. It was AMAZING!! You hang off a rope on the back of the boat & if you’re quiet & calm these creatures come to check you out. They get within 1-2m of you & they are between 4-6m long. They swim past, look you in the eye, sometime give you a belly roll…..just fantastic! Not much is known about them, like where they’ve been or where they go but they always seem to turn up at this place at this time. All the photos we took were donated to the James Cook Uni’s research team as they are working on understanding more about these wonderful creatures. Each whale has unique patterns on it’s fins & sides, which are even different on its left & right side, so the researchers are building up a database to id which whales come back. And all those small white scars on its back are from the ‘Cookie Cutter Shark’ which lives out in the ocean and has a circular hinged jaw which latches onto the whale and takes out a chunk of blubber – yuck! Here’s the project’s website for more info Minke Whale Project It was truly a wonderful wonderful experience.

Another Minke shot, this one swam so close to me & then gave me a belly roll! No one really knows why they do that, there are suggestions it’s to do with mating, tho I hope i don’t look like a whale underwater ;-) LOL Last week I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to snorkel with Dwarf Minke Whales at Lighthouse Bommie on the Great Barrier Reef. • The Puma will warm up any room. Warm brown puma with a mink warm brown background. Buy the large print and hang it on the wall and watch it warm up your room. There once was a man from Yuma, / Who told an elephant joke to a puma, / Now his body lies, / Under the hot desert skies, / For the puma had no sense of huma.

Click here for a short Wikipedia entry on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_Tan_Alley / http://vancouverisland.kulshan.com/British_Columbia/Vancouver_Island/Capital_Area/Victoria/Attractions/Fan_Tan_Alley.htm And as for the ermine, or polecat – I took her picture out by an abandoned house in the middle of a wheat field! I’ll post a real picture of her soon. :D

  • This delightful little female popped out in front of me and at the time I just happened to have my camera in hand. She was about 20 feet away and was just taking a look around…...........naturally I froze still as possible and zoomed in quickly. I had about 15 seconds before she was gone. They are amazingly fast and move like a snake. It is common for the mink to manage 3 dens and use them at various times of the year. Each individual requires an area equivalent to 30 acres to sustain them. / This is a natural photo in her natural habitat. ( I used a 70 – 300 mm lens and zoomed closer. f 5.6, exposure 1/400 sec, ISO 400, maximum aperture 5, metering mode – pattern ) / Location of image – Ottawa River, Pembroke, ON where Muskrat River and Ottawa River join. / /

  • Everyone needs a snow day with nothing to do but PLAY, everyone!

  • Mink Frog – rana septentrionalis / Copper Harbor, Michigan, USA This northwoods frog species is found only in the northern Great Lakes region and likes streams, ponds, lakes where there are cool, permanent bodies of water with lots of lily pads and other water plants. This one was along Lake Superior in a pool of water made by splashing waves. / The Mink Frog is found in and in Northern Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is also found in northern New England and New York and Canada from Nova Scotia west to Manitoba. / When handled, this little frog gives off a musky odor resembling the smell of a mink. People who’ve experienced it have compared the smell to rotting onions. I didn’t handle this one so I didn’t have the pleasure!

  • Those of you who know me will know that I have a passion for photography and even more so for wildlife. The following photographs are a few of my favourite shots of animals.

  • I took this “American Mink Crossing” from an island in one of the ponds in his territory at the Fisher Butte Unit in the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area of Lane County, Oregon. The American Mink are very territorial animals. A male mink will not tolerate another male within its territory, but appears to be less aggressive towards females. Generally, the territories of both male and female animals are separate, but a female’s territory may sometimes overlap with that of a male. Very occasionally it may be totally within a male’s. / The territories, which tend to be long and narrow, stretch along river banks, or around the edges of lakes or marshes. Sizes vary, but they can be several miles long. Female territories are smaller than those of the male. / Each territory has one or two central areas (core areas) where the mink spends most of its time. The core area is usually associated with a good food supply, such as a pool rich in fish, or a good rabbit warren. The mink may stay in its core area, which can be quite small, for several days at a time, but it also makes excursions to the ends of its territory. These excursions seem to be associated with the defense of the territory against intruders. It is likely that the mink checks for any signs of a strange mink and leaves droppings (scats) redolent of its personal scent to reinforce its territorial rights. (Info from; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mink ) Taken with a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS on 8/16/09, TV 1/500, AV F5.70, ISO 200, and Focal length at 100.00mm.

  • An American Mink, suddenly peeks out from underneath some rocks along the beach at Whiffen Spit, Vancouver Island, BC. He appeared as surprised to see me a few feet away as I was to see him as he stared at me with his soulful watery eyes but luckily I had my camera and 500mm lens already mounted on the tripod and was able to hastily get a couple of photographs of him before he disappeared back under the rocks again. Canon 40D / 1/80sec f8 ISO 400
