  • “The Melbourne Silver Mine Inc. is a non-profit incorporated association of enthusiastic analogue photographers based in Melbourne Australia. The group has been formed to achieve the following purposes: To encourage and promote the continued use, unique features and appreciation of traditional photographic techniques and equipment To assist in the exchange of ideas and enable collaboration on projects which promote the continued use of traditional photography to the wider community. To support the use of contemporary technologies in order to achieve these purposes. Although we primarily exist to promote traditional photo technologies we embrace modern and future techniques. Our members are very technologically aware and seek to demonstrate how traditional technologies can work with digital photography and other modern photographic techniques to achieve a new art form, drawing the best from both old and new methods. The Melbourne Silver Mine has formed over the past 18 months after a small group of like minded photographers formed on the photo sharing website flickr.com. The group continues to grow and inspire more photographers to return to film photography or to take it up for the first time. We share ideas, techniques and equipment. This enthusiasm gave rise to our inaugural exhibition of analogue photography, Unsensored07, which was held at Kerala Gallery in Northcote, Melbourne in November 2007. 12 photographers exhibited 24 works. In 2008, Unsensored08 is double in size with 30 photographers exhibiting 46 works at the Collingwood Gallery from 8th to 20th August 2008. We have plans for events, publications and collaborative photographic projects that highlight the group’s objectives. Thanks for your interest and participation, you can become a part of the Melbourne Silver Mine by joining us as a member or sponsoring our projects.” http://silvermine.org.au All profits of the sales of this tee go directly to the Melbourne Silver Mine.

  • The common worker with a common temptation.

  • Taken in 1966, this is one of my favourite images of the 60’s of the iconic DJ, Sir Jimmy Savile OBE. I took the shot when I was 20 during my assistant days at 1:15 am, after a long advertising shoot for a petrol company with my boss, top fashion and advertising photographer John Cowan. I asked Sir Jim if I could run a couple of rolls of film for my portfolio. True gent that he is, Jim said “Sure!” even though every one was pretty tired after the 5 hour gasoline ad session. Anyhow, this is the result and it remains one of my favourite pictures to this day as it shows Sir Jim as he really was and is – a strong and generous human being who did not take himself too seriously. You are a true professional Jim, and I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this opportunity. • He belongs to me and I to him.

  • This image was shot at dawn. I waited on the lake in the dark in my kayak until the sun started to peer over the horizon and the mist I had been kayaking through became evident. The silence was golden. This is the picture I have in my head of that moment, a place I want to return to over and over again.

  • This art work was created in collaboration with Bradley Nichol We discovered that we are each U2 fans and decided to collaborate illustrating the songs from The Joshua Tree. This is the first work we have done together. The main image of the tree and stars is all Brad. I absolutely fell in love with the photograph and added the miners, lighting, and red. The image of the miners is public domain. Finally the song, “Red Hill Mining Town,” was written by Bono some say in response to the United Kingdom miner’s strike in 1984 when Maggie Thatcher closed “unprofitable” mines, placing already economically fragile families in peril. • Took this on a three day sea kayak trip I did around Wilsons Promontory’s north end in January. On the last night we stayed at the beautiful Tin Mine Cove and witnessed a gorgeous sunset followed by this lovely post sunset glow. At the time I was so busy taking the photo I didn’t actually realize that I was taking a shot of two boats mored side by side and only clicked the next morning after talking to the yachty of the second boat (they had dinner together then mored apart for the night). The island in the background is called Doughboy Island. • The Botallack mine was part of the St. Just mining complex that mined the hard rock for black tin and copper for centuries. Many generations of Cornish families were employed in this dangerous industry till the stocks of black tin and prices for the ore made it unworkable. Situated a few miles from Lands End on the rugged North coast of Cornwall, this image is of the Crown Engine Pump House which was at it’s peak in the early nineteenth century, the main shaft from it, the Boscawen Shaft reaches under the Atlantic Ocean diagonally for some 800 metres, most of the other mine pump houses are situated on the cliff tops high above this one. The promontory that the engine house is sited on is Crown Rock, the seam of black tin ore is very visible in this image just above sea level. though the many different colours of ore are also visible on the rocky headland. There is always a lot of wave activity in this rugged cove, even on a fine Summer’s day like this the Ocean is very choppy and I wanted to capture the wave action as well as the detail on the mine and cliff so quite a number of exposures were tried.
