Dedicated to “Shanghaiwu” ,this work was inspired by her beautiful art. A combination of Sumi & Computer the Ancient and the Modern. The base of this image is Suminagashi, known in the west as Sumi.( Ancient)Marbling. / It is Japanese water painting using inks, natural minerals, stylus, brushes / and I use a hand fan to move the medium. / Sometimes if there is a nice wind blowing in the window, then nature lends a hand. The willow leaves are from Japanese hand painted papers, the tree itself is from one of my early hand made marbled papers. / I made it a .jpg and played around with it a bit on the computer.(Modern) David.
The cranes fly to the west carrying the ancient art of Suminagashi (Marbling on rice paper) to the western world. / A sign of peace?
The plan worked to perfection, “Bree”hemoth, unleashed his pneumatically assisted whipper arm and plucked Zola from the air. The shock on Zola’s body was immense, his eyes bulged and his sausage roll super thrusters, deprived of much needed airflow, whined in protest. He was fast losing consciousness. The red world blurred and greyed at the edges and all sound receded in a rapidly closing mental fog. The “Bree”hemoth opened its jaws in delight and cast victorious glance down at Zola, no more would these free flyer, cliff-dwellers, disrupt operations at the hill. His last thought was a brief concern as to the whereabouts of Zola’s partner, Gorgon. The distraction had worked, The excitement registered by the Breehemoth, had momentarily diverted power from its dome shield and Gorgon punched through the soft tissue, his internal processors and deft pink fingers worked at light speed, to sever and remove the “Bree”hemoth’s core controller –its brain. Zola dropped from lifeless fingers, his motors roared into life on auto pilot and took him up to a safe altitude, where he came round to see Gorgon next to him. Gorgon and Zola roared off into the red sky with cheesy grins plastered over their faces.

If someone had left this oil laying about when the site was open i imagine they would have been in for quite an arse kicking, but now the place is closed im glad it is laying on the floor as it makes for a lovely reflective shot of the ladder and gantry on the nearby machine.

This location at Mammoth Springs in Yellowstone National Park was really captivating as the evening light set off the colors of the orange and white terraces and the deep rich tones of the lodge pole pines. The remnants of trees are reported to be as much as 2000 years old but remain standing, preserved by the mineral deposits that flowed up from the hot interior of the earth which remains active from volcanoes that created this wonderland after erupting 600,000+ years ago. /
Taken in 1966, this is one of my favourite images of the 60’s of the iconic DJ, Sir Jimmy Savile OBE. I took the shot when I was 20 during my assistant days at 1:15 am, after a long advertising shoot for a petrol company with my boss, top fashion and advertising photographer John Cowan. I asked Sir Jim if I could run a couple of rolls of film for my portfolio. True gent that he is, Jim said “Sure!” even though every one was pretty tired after the 5 hour gasoline ad session. Anyhow, this is the result and it remains one of my favourite pictures to this day as it shows Sir Jim as he really was and is – a strong and generous human being who did not take himself too seriously. You are a true professional Jim, and I am eternally grateful to you for giving me this opportunity. From the old, old computer game I used to play on the C64. Play it online here! Here’s a great article on the mystery surrounding the creator of Manic Miner, Matthew Smith.

This art work was created in collaboration with Bradley Nichol We discovered that we are each U2 fans and decided to collaborate illustrating the songs from The Joshua Tree. This is the first work we have done together. The main image of the tree and stars is all Brad. I absolutely fell in love with the photograph and added the miners, lighting, and red. The image of the miners is public domain. Finally the song, “Red Hill Mining Town,” was written by Bono some say in response to the United Kingdom miner’s strike in 1984 when Maggie Thatcher closed “unprofitable” mines, placing already economically fragile families in peril.
