  • The antique tiny steam train that climbs the narrow-gauge track up the mountain to Darjeeling, India, stops at a station to fill up with water and pick up more passengers. The tiny carriages are crammed tighter than a bundle of Indian beedie cigarettes. Thick coal smoke billows into the open windows and doors, making the excruciatingly slow ride an experience one does not want to repeat. Nikon FM2, kodachrome slide film, 1980.

  • manufactured landscape. / another full-on post-production experiment. The plan, to create a landscape that looks a bit different from the parts used to make it. Still stuck on the fact that small plants mirror large trees, that whole natural fractal aspect … started off shooting these garden parsley bed “trees” up close and very low Dodge and burn to limit it’s monoculture look. I left the realtime background in but instead of relying on actual trees, [there were distinct size problem clues,] I decided they’d better represent further jungle hills, so I fogged up the UV filter with a bit of breath and created a foggy/cloudy sky. Grabbed a couple of other garden shots for foliage detail treatment layers and layered up around 7 layers of flora to create these rainforest view. Visual aspects, parsley “treeline” real trees as background mountains and other lifesize background was covered in “cloud” hanging onto the tree tops and the sky was overcast in the process. The lawn in front was too pedestrian, and so I layed in some undergrowth shapes to make the meadow more interesting and give the grass a head-hight feel. Finally added a Koru in the foreground to add to the perspective and pov – coming out some shadowed growth to the view beyond … I think it’s a viable illusion.
