Italy has this amazing sense of graphic content, strong colour and concrete abide – a vast mixture of classic and contemporary motifs intertwined. Just splendid to be amongst it.
The fantasy behind this is based on The Mabinogi- a famous Welsh legend. Arawn is the King of Annwn, who appears in the first of the four branches of The Mabinogi. This is how I imagine his kingdom- both glorious and apocalyptic. (The photograph was taken in Milan, and altered using PS CS3).

Young lovers in Milan /
me just being clever reflecting Milan through a shop window. haha
Picture taken in December 2007 in Milan. I love the warm effect of the light inside the room and the contrast between inside and outside.

The intricate glass ceiling of this building is a masterpiece in itself. The light and space of the building is fascinating, a real architectural gem. Also notice the frescoes on the high stone walls. / Named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of united Italy, it was originally designed in 1861 and built by Giuseppe Mengoni between 1865 and 1877. / Top 10 – Italian Architecture challenge, Dec 09. / A speciality of Milan is the 19th century belle époque-style Galeria Vittorio Emanuele being the oldest shopping mall in the world. The four-story arcade houses shops, cafes and luxury boutiques including Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci; the famous but a bit pricey Ristorante Savini is placed on the second floor. / You can find also a McDonalds that seemed a bit out of place here. There is a special atmosphere due to the glass ceiling and the mosaic floor. / The symbols on the mosaic floor represent the capitals of the Kingdom of Italy in various periods: Milan, Turin, Florence and Rome. / A superstition, reported in every guides, says, the emblem of Turin brings good luck by rotating on it. Just look the others and you will see how it should be done, and remember that the rotation has to be clockwise, because otherwise the good luck becomes bad. It is funny and interesting, but I had never seen any local milanesi rotating there. It seems not to be a local, rather a touristic custom! / Above, the mosaics in the semicircular pedentives under the glass dome represent the “four corners of the earth”: Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. They were originally frescoes, but were replaced in mosaic. The 24 statues in the Gallery represent Italian personalities, such as Leonardo, Michelangelo, Galilei, Volta etc.
Still trying to improve my portrait work. I picked Milan (my nine year old son) as my subject and he was all up for posing for the camera! The room was dark and Milan sat up high. The sun shone in through the french doors and I just had him move partially into the light. He was determined to do a good job, shown by the look in his eye and the set of his jaw.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a covered double arcade formed of two glass-vaulted arcades at right angles intersecting in an octagon; it is prominently sited on the northern side of the Piazza del Duomo in Milan, The central octagonal space is topped with a glass dome. The Milanese Galleria was larger in scale than its predecessors and was an important step in the evolution of the modern glazed and enclosed shopping mall, of which it was the direct progenitor. It has inspired the use of the term galleria for many other shopping arcades and malls. This is actually a light fitting making up the ceiling within the food court of the Italian version of Harrods which is directly opposite Duomo in central Milan. I liked it immediately and proceeded to get some very strange and confused looks from people! Frankly I thought it was more strange that someone would pay £300 for a bottle of water…. Dedicated to Santa Maria Nascente, the Duomo is situated in a square of the same name in the city centre. It is the church with the fourth largest surface area in Europe after St Peter’s in the Vatican, Saint Paul’s in London and Seville Cathedral. / After the collapse of the old cathedral’s bell-tower, Archbishop Antonio de’ Saluzzi championed the reconstruction of a new, bigger church (1386), with the demolition of the existing Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Tecla. The works reached a turning point in 1387 when Gian Galeazzo Visconti took control of them, imposing a late-Gothic design to be built in Condoglia marble. I saw it on 3 July 2009 and enjoyed it very much. This is gorgeous with its 153 towers. / /

This is my homage to one of the most creative and beloved Cuban singer/composers of all times. Pablo Milanés. / And this is one of the songs that I love the most: (please scroll down for translated version)) El tiempo pasa. / / (I made an extracted translation for you to understand it) Time passes. We are getting old / And I can´t reflect my love as I did yesterday / In each conversation / Every kiss every hug, a piece of reason / Is always imposed We live. Viewing hours. How they pass / The old arguments have been lost / Among the reasons / Because years ago to take your hand / and to steal a kiss without stretching the time / It was part of a truth. / / You say yes to all / I don´t say no to nothing / To build this tremendous harmony / That makes hearts grow old Cause Time passes. We are getting old / And I can´t reflect my love as I did yesterday / In each conversation / Every kiss every hug, a piece of fear / Is always imposed This is an old video of Pablo Milanés performing this song.
