The story behind this design relates to myspace. I like to send a thanks you to any one who adds mikoto as a friend thanks for the add comment. The caption that goes with this image reads: just a little note to say thanks for you for finding me mikoto. I have started linking the messages back to redbubble so if they like the banner they can buy it on a shirt. Detail of graphic: / Detail of the note: / I must acknowledge mambos classic farting dog for its influence on this design. scotty
Don’t you just love how the contents of a sushi roll are all snuggled together in the middle of the rice and sea-weed. In this case the odd couple, salmon and cucumber seem very happy in snuggled together. detail of graphic:
mikoto’s Daruma Doll someone asked me at my stall at Paddington Markets about the meaning behind the skull logo. I talked to them about how I wanted to achieve a balance between cuteness and evil/cheeckyness in all of the mikoto designs. Having the skull and cross bones with love heart eyes and a cute smile symbolized that. I also talked about how having one eye coloured related to the Japanese Daruma Doll. The Daruma is a Japanese doll that is sold near Buddhist temples all throughout Japan. It symbolises optimism, persistence, and strong determination because of its ability to be tilted to one side and always return to the upright position. The doll’s eyes only contain the color white. Using black ink, you fill in a single eye while thinking of a wish. If the wish comes true, the second eye is then filled in. When I designed the logo I made one eye black with the Daruma Doll and a wish in mind. The mikoto logo is representative of a personal Daruma. It holds a wish that I hope one day Ill achieve, and represents the qualities I need to possess to make it happen. hopefully, my goals will one day come true, and Ill be able to colour in both eyes. thanks for taking the time to meet mikoto’s Daruma Doll scotty
I have been thinking about how to merge a few of my designs together and I like how this has worked out. I based on the idea of one of those Pandora bracelets you have that you can continually add to. IN this case I have the daruma doll, mocha, skull, forkers, a moon and french bulldog. Plus a few stars. enjoy!
French BullDog French Bulldogs are one of my favourite breads of dog, simply because of funny look they have on their face. When I was in Switzerland a few years ago I remember sitting having dinner at an up-market restaurant. I could heard this snotty labored breathing nearby. I turned around to see what it was and there were these two french bulldogs sitting upright at the next dinner table staring over at me and my food. I will never forget their comical and stark expressions.
Kunoichi – Ninja Girl Kunoichi(くノ一) is the female term for ninja. It actually means Dragon Lady and was the name given to women of the Black Dragon Fighting Society. Story has it that There was once a daughter of a Japanese lord who had been assassinated. She was subsequently married off to a new husband. One night she invited all the friends and relatives of her new spouse to a feast and poisoned them. This left her with a reputation for ruthless efficiency.
This design depicts a Samurai and he is in a bad mood, his dagger is drawn and one hand rests on a sword ready to go. In this design I have tried to achieve a balance between the headdress by stretching the Japanese kanji for samurai (侍) underneath him. The writing also gives it perspective as if in the street and I particularly like it how the symbol is red like blood. The style of this design is a result of going down to Melbourne and seeing all that amazing graffiti. It has a Banksy stencil feel but with a little more colour.
The maneki neko is a popular Japanese sculpture that is believed to bring good luck to its owner. Often used in businesses – A raised left paw attracts customers while a raised right paw supposedly attracts money. Also know as the Money Cat it is a symbolic ornament that offers people hope that they will achieve wealth and success. We all know that these ornamental pieces don’t directly produce what they promise. What they do offer is a symbol that you can look at when your feeling beaten. Having one in a highly visible place can give you a constant beacon of light that makes you persevere on something that may at times feel too hard. To believe in the abilities of one of these ornaments (and in effect believe in yourself) you can manifest success. www.mikoto.com.au
Bang! was a scribble that I drew while at the Markets. It depicts a cannon shaped liked a cement mixer shooting out a scared little canon ball. Two other balls are very humored by his predicament… Scotty
Geisha is feeling a little shy and seeks solace behind her Akomeogi (japanese folding fan) special thanks to frozenfa for inspiring me to do some designs :)
I was thinking about if the Neapolitan ice cream flavours of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate were characters and came up with this picture. Strawberry is girly, Vanilla is happy and Choc looks tough but a really big melting softy!
last year on the 7th of July 2007 I was looking through a Japanese/English dictionary for a name i could use for the characters that i was designing in illustrator. one word i typed in was prince and up came a few translations including one that caught my eye “mikoto” i spoke to a japanese friend who explained to me that the word was no longer used in that context as it was actually an ancient word used for the son of an emperor. i loved the story and i adopted the word to encompass all of the designs that i do. it has been a year that has where waves of creativity have had to compete with personal needs and my primary profession of being a teacher. What hasn’t waned is the warm and generous support of all my friends and supporters (especially those form red-bubble) from who seem to love what has been created. So i though as the first anniversary of mikoto passed on the 7/7/7 i would put all of the T-shirt designs onto one file. (its a few days late) thanks everyone who has commented, Bmailed, purchased, etc scotty (。◕‿‿◕。)
Brit is another addition to the mikoto dog family. it was requested by Big Fat Robot and is a tribute to my friend matthew’s old bulldog Rumpole. They are not the most energetic dogs as you can tell by Brit’s interest in the tennis ball. This is the drawing it is based on. I’m always surprised by how much i like my tiny tiny drawings! / Scotty (。◕‿‿◕。)
A metaphorical representation of when one feels an attraction that they know is wrong, doomed, and futile, where the only certainty is that someone is going to get hurt, where the allure is so compelling that all sensible judgment is ignored… Pictured is a Naïve little bomb that has unexpectedly spotted a naked flame. It’s eyes are transfixed on the burning glow and the wick has begun to instinctively move towards it…....... What next??? Scotty (。◕‿‿◕。)
This price of ink is a crime and when you open up your printer to find out who the culprit is for the strange coloured document or whinging printer utility your always looking at the four usual suspects, C, M, Y & K (aka black). In this design i have tried to give each of them a bit of character like the Usual Suspects movie cover. I’d like to acknowledge Big Fat Robot and his Tshirt design R,G and B. which is one of my favorite T’s and one of the inspirations for this T. So who do you suspect? /
