Rooster 1 Has Landed

Mike Savlen, is a top-line Sporting Marine & Landscape artist out of Costa Rica. Mike and I have struck up a friendship via Facebook and our love for fish, fishing, hunting, the outdoors and ART. This week (May11,2009) Mike finally caught his very first roosterfish (Nematistius pectoralis). And he did it in style. A 75# behemoth ! Aged, worn and scared – Mike connected with an old timer, took the photos and then returned him to live out the remainder of his time in the sea. The rooster is a magnificent fish to look at -wonderful colors and lines. Gotta dig that doral rise and the wild – zebra-like stripes! This is a fish made for the tropics! And they are real fighters! Tackle testers all the way. But they are horrid table fair. Like most fish in the jack family (besides the amberjack and California Yellowtail) it is not considered a good eating fish. And that’s being nice! So release isn’t an option – it’s a necessity! I snagged the photo from which this image was developed – from Mike’s Facebook account (w/ his blessings of course) and tumbled it through the eLITHOGRAPH process. Nothing as good as Mike puts out, but acceptably intriguing. New areas for me as I don’t usually use such a bright palette. But, hey – first time for everything. Right?

Creatures of the Edge

The requirements for this piece were simply a winter storm coming over a Vermont field, with perhaps a nice buck in the foreground.The collectors wanted more realism in this piece as well as wanting it to appear cold because it was going over a large fireplace. I chose to use a sharp contrast between the earth and sky in this painting to show the power and depth of the storm, with the wary buck keeping a sharp eye on it before heading for cover.
