  • Domes
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The domes of the Parish Church at Paola, a part of the large connurbation around Valletta, the capital of Malta. HDR.

  • This church in North Cornwall is famous for its association with Thomas Hardy. Before he became a famous poet and author he was an architect, and in 1870 was assigned to survey this church prior to its restoration. While there he met his future wife, Emma Gifford, who was the sister-in-law of the vicar. This church owes much to his efforts, as it was in a terrible state before he arrived. There are many similarities (and some differences) between his real-life circumstances and those in his book “A Pair of Blue Eyes”.

  • This church lies in one corner of the Rynek Glowny (Market Square) in the centre of Cracow, Poland. It dates from the second half of the fourteenth century, is now a minor basilica, and contains some beautiful carvings by Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz).

  • Well worn
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The base of the village cross in Għarb (pron. arrb), Gozo. Pentax K 10D.

  • This church is situated in a very isolated spot near the cliffs of North Cornwall. It dates from the 12th century, but there was almost certainly a church on this site in the 10th century dedicated to St. Gennys or St. Genesius. There were many such holy men who came over to Cornwall from Wales and Ireland in the first millennium – they would set up in such a spot near a source of water (for baptism as well as nourishment) and hold services in the open air. They would often live as hermits, and in time the water source would become a “holy well” of which there are many in Cornwall, one being located very close to this church.

  • St Materiana
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The church of St Materiana (or Madryn) on the cliffs at Tintagel, North Cornwall. It has remained essentially unchanged since it was rebuilt in the 12th century, apart from the addition of the tower in the 15th century. This famous church has always been an important landmark for sailors heading up or down the western coasts – it was already more than 500 years old when the Normans arrived in 1066. Taken at sunset on a June evening. / Pentax K 10D, 1/3 sec, f 4, ISO 400. Zoom lens set at 58 mm.

  • Bormla in festa mood
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The town of Cospicua (Bormla to the Maltese) celebrates its feast day (festa) on the 8th December (the feast of the Immaculate Conception) and here it is on that day in all its splendour. Pentax K 10D.

  • Band club
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The facade of the De Paule Philharmonic Society’s premises in Paola, Malta, decorated for Christmas 2008. These band clubs are very popular in Maltese society – apart from providing the musical accompaniment to the celebrations of the feast of the town or village’s patron saint, they take part in or provide many other social functions. The premises are often elaborately decorated for the major feasts. Pentax K10D.

  • This square contains the imposing baroque church dedicated to the same saint, and finished in 1693, while the statue of this saint, St. Nicholas of Bari, was finished in 1732. Taken on a January night. Pentax K10D.

  • Early Mass
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The early Sunday morning Mass is about to start and parishioners are hurrying to the church… Taken not long after dawn in one of the quiet rural villages on the tiny island of Gozo (Maltese archipelago). Pentax K 10D

  • Bir miftuħ
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The ancient chapel of Santa Marija ta Bir Miftuħ (literally, Saint Mary of the Open Well) is located near the main airport and provides a rare haven of peace in this busy part of the island of Malta, especially at sunset when this was taken. This wayside chapel, which is now looked after by Malta’s main heritage trust, is one of the best remaining examples of simple medieval church architecture. It dates from at least 1430 and used to be the main parish church for a large surrounding area, but it suffered depredations from marauding Turks and others and so a new parish church was built closer to the centre of the nearby village. It contains remains of a fresco of the Last Judgement over the main door. Fragments of this painting, which dates from about 1480, were only recently discovered under many layers of paint. The chapel is surrounded by fields and has been well looked after by its new keepers.

  • This cupola is one of several richly decorated cupolas in this church, which can be found just off the main square (It-Tokk) in Victoria, the capital of the island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago. The people of Gozo are very religious, the majority of them attending church regularly. The Maltese people in general are very proud of their churches and this is reflected in their size and the rich interior decoration of most of them. Pentax K10D.

  • Madonna tal-Blat
    by M G Pettett

    US$3.99–US$91.20

The interior of the tiny chapel of Il-Madonna tal-Blat (the Madonna of the rocks), which overlooks the bay of Hondoq ir-Rummien on Gozo, Maltese archipelago. This was taken at Christmas time, with the beautiful decorations still in place.

  • A keen trumpet player in the band at the festa (feast) of the Immaculate Conception, Cospicua, Malta. The music this band produced was extremely good! Pentax K 10D

  • Little religious niches can be found everywhere on the islands of Malta and Gozo, often at the corners of private houses where they can be seen from many directions. Some of them like this one in the quiet centre of the village of Gudja were considered important enough to allow indulgences to be granted to those who recited a specific prayer specified on the plaque below the niche. These indulgences were supposed to reduce one’s time in Purgatory atoning for one’s sins, but most of these indulgences were abolished some time ago by the Catholic Church.
