This magnificent November sunset over the village of Qala in Gozo, Maltese islands had to be seen to be believed. Those who might think this is overdone are invited to come and see for themselves! HDR. Pentax K 10D.
The picture is of a small island called Fungus Rock. It lies just off the coast near Dwejra on the western side of the island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago. A rare plant grows there, prized for its medicinal qualities – so much so that the Knights of St. John forbade anyone to collect it on penalty of death and mounted a guard to keep trespassers away. Probably for this reason the Maltese call this rock “The General’s Rock”. The title means northwest in Maltese and that’s where this November storm was coming from, when this picture was taken near sunset. Tourists used to visiting in Summer might be interested in a somewhat different view of the place! Pentax K 10D.
Gozo is cat-lovers’ paradise. You couldn’t get a more Gozitan (Maltese) cat than this one – rubble wall, prickly pear, limestone building blocks and cat….. Pentax K 10D.
The village of Zebbuġ, in Gozo (Maltese archipelago) lit by the first rays of the dawn. Taken from the Citadel ramparts, Victoria (the capital). Pentax K 10D.
The early Sunday morning Mass is about to start and parishioners are hurrying to the church… Taken not long after dawn in one of the quiet rural villages on the tiny island of Gozo (Maltese archipelago). Pentax K 10D
The town of Cospicua (known as Bormla in Maltese) lies close to the dockyard, which still is one of the more important contributors to the Maltese economy. They celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception in this town on the 8th December; this is one of the incredibly ornate and colourful statuess and plinths which decorate the streets at this time, bringing a welcome touch of colour to the rather drab, industrial background. Another view of the fort, this time in daylight. When the Knights of St. John came to Malta from Rhodes in 1530 they chose this fort as their main military stronghold. There was probably a Phoenicean temple to Astarte on this site before the fort was built, but the date of construction of the original fort is unknown. It was almost certainly ancient when the Knghts arrived. The creek where the yachts are moored was the scene of a pitched battle during the Great Siege of Malta (1565). The Turks who had overrun Senglea on the left, tried to swim across and mount an attack on the fort, but were stopped by the Maltese who dived into the water from the fort side and cut them to pieces in a hand-to-hand battle. / These creeks form part of the Grand Harbour, one of the finest in the Mediterranean. The peninsula of Valletta (the capital) lies shaded in the background. Pentax K 10D
These Maltese fishing boats have been made the same way for a very long time, and they are so colourful I find it hard to walk past without taking dozens of photographs every time! Such a boat is called a “luzzu” (pron. lootsoo) in Maltese and they are designed for deep sea fishing. One old fisherman told me that all they use for navigation is a compass and dead-reckoning . The fishermen were encouraged to buy trawlers by the government some years ago. However they were unpopular owing to the expense of maintenance, the fact that the Mediterranean sea bottom is anything but flat and trawler nets are designed for a relatively flat seabed, and also because many fishermen are reluctant to spend too long at sea. The yellow band indicates that this boat comes from the port of Marsaxlokk. The eye is supposed to be the Phoenician eye of Osiris protecting against evil, but there is some controversy about this. Some of the interesting stuff fishermen leave lying about at Marsaxlokk, Malta. Pentax K 10D.
Just liked the patterns on this wall, and the shapes created by the primitive stone steps leading up the side of this old farmhouse to the roof. Pentax K 10D.
Sunset on St Stephen’s day (26th December 2008). Taken from the cliffs near Kerċem (pron. kerchem), Gozo, Maltese archipelago. Pentax K10D.
This bay is a prime location for bathing and sunbathing and as such is well known to tourists, but the pool in the foreground is an important bird sanctuary, the Maltese islancs being an important staging post on the migration route from Europe to Africa. The rubble-walled building in the foreground is a hide. Pentax K10D
This cupola is one of several richly decorated cupolas in this church, which can be found just off the main square (It-Tokk) in Victoria, the capital of the island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago. The people of Gozo are very religious, the majority of them attending church regularly. The Maltese people in general are very proud of their churches and this is reflected in their size and the rich interior decoration of most of them. Pentax K10D.
This valley, which as far as I can gather is called Wied is-Simar (Simar valley), is located near Qala, Gozo, Maltese archipelago. The fertile soil, lush crops, tiny fields, wind pump and reservoir, cane wind breaks and terraced fields are all typical scenes of valley agriculture in Gozo. Pentax K10D.

The facade of the De Paule Philharmonic Society’s premises in Paola, Malta, decorated for Christmas 2008. These band clubs are very popular in Maltese society – apart from providing the musical accompaniment to the celebrations of the feast of the town or village’s patron saint, they take part in or provide many other social functions. The premises are often elaborately decorated for the major feasts. Pentax K10D.
More stuff the fishermen at Marsaxlokk, Malta, leave lying around! I liked the late sunlight falling on this chain and the texture of the rusty metal… Selective colouration. Pentax K 10D.
Malta. Another old Marsaxlokk boat in the sunset of its existence…. Pentax K10D.
(pron. imjar ish sheeny). This tiny bay on the southern coast of the island of Gozo, Maltese archipelago, is now a popular spot for bathing and diving, and is used by fishermen too. In the middle ages it is reputed to have been used by the Knights of St. John to harbour their galleys. The tower was built in 1661 during the grandmastership of De Redin to guard this (then) very isolated spot. The land in the far background is the island of Malta, while that closer to the camera is the island of Comino. The two white Gozo Channel ferries are busy making their way to and from the two main islands… Pentax K10D.
This square contains the imposing baroque church dedicated to the same saint, and finished in 1693, while the statue of this saint, St. Nicholas of Bari, was finished in 1732. Taken on a January night in Siġġiewi, Malta, Maltese archipelago. Pentax K10D.
