The harbour is dominated by a neo-gothic monument, the Lourdes Church, and Fort Chambray, the last fortification built by the Knights in 1749 . The Knight de Chambray personally paid for its construction. Originally a replica of Valletta , Malta was going to be built within its walls. • The Village of Mgarr is located in the Northern part of the Island of Malta. It is a country Village forming a part of the Norhern farming community. Most of the villagers are either farmers or direct descendants of farmers, who left farming to find work in the South where most of the Maltese industries lie. On the outskirts of Mgarr, and other such villages, lie small hamlets formed a few hundred years ago, which are inhabited mostly by members of the same family, or close relatives. Most of their houses were built very close to each other for safety. No streets existed but houses were built along cart paths forming small narrow alleys, just wide enough to let horse or donkey drawn carts through. What you see in the picture is one such alley.
